2016 #13: Art Journal Layout {a video from Vicky Papaioannou}

 2016 Topic 13: Paper Piecing

Hi everyone Vicky Papaioannou, from Clips and Cuts here.

Tonight I'd like to share with you this evening with a journalling video using a paper piecing technique.

My favorite technique when it comes to art journaling is paper piecing. It gives me the freedom to play around with my focal elements and when I am happy about them, I go ahead and commit by sticking them on my background.

This technique can save you lots of frustration especially if you are a beginner. When I make a background and love it the last thing you want is to do something directly on top of it that might not end up as you want it. But with paper piecing you are playing it safe!

I am happy to guest design for PaperArtsy today! I am sharing an art journal layout using many different techniques and featuring awesome stamp sets, as you can see from the clips above.

There is also a step by step video where you can see the techniques used, below.

When I first saw the whimsical flower stamps in....

 and EKD02

...stamp sets I knew I had to use them to create a scene. Just use the stamps and add lots of different colors on them for a happy and colorful page.

I also like to add a frame around my layouts, I think that makes them pop even more!

I used Darcy's stencil PS031

Here is a look at the finished project...

First I created the background with the brayer technique and using a couple of different colors of fresco finish paints. It goes onto the paper really quickly and gives a great texture. You will love this technique if you haven't tried it yet. To finish off my background I also did some stamping.

All the flowers and the clouds are paper pieced. I have stamped them on a separate piece of paper, colored them and them cut them out with scissors. This way I had lots of freedom to play around and decide where to stick what to look balanced.

You can enjoy the step by step video below...

I had so much fun making this project and it is really easy to replicate. Just remember that I used fresco finish paint on my background and focal points, which is permanent.

This made it super easy to stick down all the elements since I had no smear or smudging of the underneath colors.

Thank you for joining me today! Go ahead and play along in the challenge below!
I can't wait to see what you will come up with by using paper piecing!.

Vicky, this is such a fun and vibrant layout. Your layers are so beautifully done. I love how you use white pen to accent each flower, and create a perfect finishing touch! Thanks so much for sharing with us, your videos are woinderful. ~Leandra

Painted Bow {with Eclectica³ Ellen Vargo Stamps by Darcy UK}

Hi everyone, Darcy here. I recently demoed a painted bow at Doncaster, and a few of you asked to see the instructions in a video. This is a great way to coordinate your gift card, tag and bow, it really does look effective.

Be warned this video is 30 minutes long, so make a cuppa and get comfy.

If you prefer photos, then here are a few reminders of the steps.

Take some regular printer paper, and scrape your first layer of paint across. I used Mermaid, Inky Pool and Cheesecake. Dry this side, then turn over your paper and colour the reverse in the same way.

Next, using the scratchy rectangle stamp from EEV02 and blue archival ink, cover the whole of one side of the paper. Make sure to alternate the direction of the stamp.

 EEV02

Now add a layer of random stamping using the gridded washer stamp from EEV06. I did this with watering can archival ink.

EEV06
This was followed by a layer of stamping using Orchid paint. Make sure the paint layer slightly overlaps the inked layer.

Now for stencilling. I used PS001 and Sherbet paint.

Once dry, I repositioned the stencil and using Spanish Mulberry I stamped again, this time through the holes of the stencil. I dried this layer, then added a thin wash of Metallic glaze.

Cut your painted page into strips, see the video for how I did this. You will end up with 9 strips. Each will be approx 7/8 inch wide (23mm). You will need 3 at 10inches long( 254mm) another 3 at 9 inches long (228mm) and 3 at 8 inches long (202mm)

Fold each of these in half. Once of the offcuts will be approx 5.5 inches long, cut the ends of this to make ribbon tails.

Bring the ends of each strip into the middle, securing them using a glue stick.

Begin to build up the bow, starting with the 3 longest strips.

Continue to build up the layers, and finish with the smallest offcut glued into the middle.

These bows can be used for any occasion, use traditional reds and greens for a Christmas bow, or go wintery with blues and purples.

I hope that was helpful, have fun creating lots of painty bows.
Darcy x

A video using our {Crackly} Tissue Paper

It's the weekend and a perfect time to kick back , put your feet up, grab a cuppa and watch a new PaperArtsy video. This time it's our Crackly Tissue Paper. Our tissue is kind of weird! It's not quite what you expect. We do love a surprise! Our tissue is robust! And theremis a reason for that! It means you can paint loads of layers of frescos onto it and it won't disintegrate in front of your eyes! It also means you can glue it down, pick it back up and reposition it very easily.

In this video you will learn how to

  • Stamp crackly, and the best inks to use
  • How to use opaques and translucent paints to block, highlight or build depth
  • Using satin glaze as a glue
  • How to change the brightness of your paints with gloss glaze

So take a look and there is still time to enter our weekly challenge! We extended the deadline this week, so you have until Sunday noon to upload your 'inspired by' contribution.

Have an awesome weekend!

Do you {bump} ...cos i do !

Today's video is all about a fantastic technique that Lynne Perrella taught us when she came to teach at ArtsyCrafts. How I have not thought of doing this before I'll never know but its deffo one of those doh moments. Thanks Lynne for sharing it with me, this year I have shown it to a few thousand more at many shows!!

You can do this really fast, and very effectively with Fresco Chalk effect paints, particularly the opaque ones really fast. But if you want to take things the next level, then you'll want to introduce some translucent shades for depth, and you need a sanding block to sand back sneaky peeks to previous layers. I feel like I say quite often 'this is my favourite' product, technique etc all the time...but it is fair to say, this is one of the most frequently used techniques in the last 12 months on all kinds of projects. It's great onto wood, its perfect to use several different stencils on the same background, and its awesome with fine detail or blocky stencils, in other words, they all work well for this!

So go and check out this video, a nice blue and orange combo it is too!
