2015 #14 Canvas {by Anneke De Clerck}

 2015 Topic 14: Flowers

Hi everyone Anneke here, joining you this evening with a post about flowers. There are flowers on almost each project I create: on my cards, my art journal pages, my books.... I love stamping flowers, doodling flowers, making 3D flowers....

This evening I want to walk you through the making of a canvas. There are lots of layers involved. Hope you'll enjoy it.

I started by collaging vintage book text, patterned paper, tissue paper, ledger paper and a playing card to a 8 x 8" (20 x 20 cm) box canvas. I used gel medium to adhere the different papers in place and I adhered the papers down the sides of the canvas to continue the pattern.

Next I dry brushed a coat of gesso on top.

I applied small amounts of lime, turquoise and light blue acrylic paint to the canvas with an old credit card.

I sprayed Distress Spray Stains 'Mermaid Lagoon' and 'Twisted Citron' to the top of the canvas, sprayed water on top and put the canvas upright to let the ink drip.

After drying I stamped arrows, grid and circles from the JOFY 36 set straight to the canvas. To achieve a crisp look I stamped the 'circles with text inside' on tissue paper first and glued that tissue paper to the canvas.

JOFY 36

I created an arrangement of pods with the JOFY 007 stencil and light modeling paste.

After drying I colored the pods with Faber-Castell Gelatos. I rubbed some Gelatos on top and blended the colors with a water brush.

I stamped the beautiful large flower from the JOFY 36 stamp set with Archival Ink 'Jet Black' on a sheet of paper and colored the prints with a combination of pink, fluorescent orange, fluorescent magenta and white paint.

I attached the flowers to the canvas with foam tape.

I cut stems out of painted paper.

I added shadow to the pods and stems with a Faber-Castell PITT artist pen (May Green).

And of course I decorated the sides of the box canvas too.

I love how the blue/green background turned out and the fluorescent flowers create a nice contrast with that background.

PaperArtsy has an extensive collection of flower stamps. So gather a few of them and join in with the challenge. I would love to see what you come up with!
Have fun!

Thanks for watching!

Wow! just look at those blasts of colour! This is a stunning way to showcase Jo's flower, with excellent supporting layers. The canvas sides look great too with the stamping wrapping around. ~ Darcy

2015 #14 Garden Slate Panel {by Lauren Hatwell}

 2015 Topic 14: Flowers

Hi everyone, Lauren Hatwell here from Marvelous Mechanical Mouse Organ, joining you this evening with a post about painting on slate.  It's a nice porous surface, which holds onto paint really nicely. As long as you seal your tile correctly you can use it pretty much anywhere you like.

I've used EDY09 for my project.

As you all know by now, I do take a slightly quirky view on things so I love the way Darcy has worked her magic on these beautiful flowers. There was nothing to be done with them but play. Perfect!

I found a piece of slate behind our shed recently and thought it would make a lovely wall hanging for the seating area on our patio. I cleaned it up with some warm water and washing up liquid, ready to take some paint. As you can see, it had a hole in it so I filled the hole with all purpose filler and sponged over a couple of layers of black gesso to give a nice even surface.

I stamped and embossed the flowers and grasses from EDY09 in white before colouring with Fresco Paints in opaque shades, which I painted straight onto the tile. The colours I used were Tinned Peas, Haystack, Wisteria, Lavender and Snowflake.

I painted some chipboard letters with Lavender Fresco Paint and stamped the sentiment from the stamp set randomly over them in white, before sealing them carefully, front and back, with two coats of Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe glue/sealant. Alternatively you could use Ranger's Glue and Seal, or a gel medium, or a varnish, but do check if it is suitable for outdoor use. As you are probably already aware, the Fresco paint range is suitable for outdoor use.

I decided I wanted to add a bit of sparkle to some of the flowers so I stamped and embossed the star flower image onto some heatproof acetate. I added some glitter glue and left it to dry thoroughly before fussy cutting the individual flowers and using them to overlay some of the painted flowers on the tile.

I used glossy accents to stick them down. I'm hoping they will twinkle in the sunshine and when the lights come on at night.

A couple of lovely JOFY bees added the finishing touch and I'm ready to hang my slate in the garden. Let's hope it encourages some sunny weather.

So, as you can see, nothing difficult about that and I hope it has given you some ideas for your own projects. I've used Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Glue/Sealant throughout for this project as a sort of experiment to see how it holds up against their Outdoor product. You could also try a spray on silicone or polyurethane varnish if you prefer. Try your hardware store.

I am happy with the finish I got from the Mod Podge but I think a spray on waterproof sealer might be easier and would reduce the risk of smearing your design. You could back your slate with felt and make table mats, trivets and coasters, or make a number/name plate for your house. If you're not lucky enough to find a lump of slate behind your shed (!?) it's easy enough to get a slate tile from your local DIY store. A nice square tile will cost you about £3. If you're not confident about painting directly onto the slate you could put your design on tissue, before gluing and sealing.

What a simple but very effective idea Lauren! I know one of our PA twits a few years back painted a terracotta pot for her patio with Frescos, and despite the sun, snow and everything in between, it still is looks fantastic now! Thrilled that Frescos have this indoor-outdoor versatility! Thanks for your lovely idea and inspiration today! ~Leandra

2015 #14 Vintage Floral {by Deb Wainwright}

2015 Topic 14: Flowers

Hello everyone, Debs here this evening with a floral canvas, well sort of!  Many of you may know I love flowers, painting them, stamping them and even creating them from dies, as well as growing them in my garden, which is another passion. But! Did I come up with something pretty or flowery, girly or feminine no! I came up with this.

My plan was a vintage canvas, subtle colours, romantic feature. However I was drawn to Slate, Concrete and Chalk Fresco Acrylics which using a roller gave a nice aged look on the frame. I extended the look into the middle. I wanted lots of big cracks in the centre, which I created with CrackleGlaze applied in a thick coat. Once the canvas was dry I sprayed it with Colorado Bloom in Deep Teal I let it drip into the cracks and as it was drying I splattered a drips here and there.

My next layer was Mod Roc bandage which was dipped into a bowl of water and then laid in place and moulded on the canvas. This was then sprayed in the same Teal colour. On top of this was some white linen which I stuck to the clay bandage. I next added my flowers. Using Versamark glue pad through the stencil and silver embossing powder. I had a lot of loose fibres from where I frayed the bandage which I stuck onto the canvas for more added interest.

To finish I added Silver Treasure Gold around the edge of the canvas and around the clay bandage in areas. I then added some more drips and splashes. I looked at it for a while and played with a few more elements but nothing looked better so I left it as it was.

You can find me at my blog, Pinterest Facebook or Twitter

Bye for now Debs xx

The textures you have achieved look wonderful Debs. The colours lend themselves nicely to accent/highlight all the different layers. Great colour choice, thanks for sharing your creativity. ~ Gillian
