Intro
Helen has created one of her typically colourful backgrounds onto which she has layered the focal images, generally in black. This is such an effective way to define your layers.  The mashing up comes with an interesting idea thrown in, like a bespoke stencil. Take a look!

Hi everyone, it's Helen with you today, and I'd like to share with you a tag I've made.

I thought the 'mash up of designers' idea was really great - I don't know about you, but I always tend to use just one designer at a time. Mixing it all up opens up a whole new world of possibilities. I think the more disparate the designers, the more fun it is.

Choosing which sets to use was quite hard as there were so many, but in the end I used an Ink and the Dog set for the focal image, with France and Courtney supporting that and used mostly the Seth Apter set for the background.

Here are the stamps I chose:

 

This panel is just made from mountboard and prepped with gesso. I've started by stamping some of Seth's designs in paint.

Then I've added some of Courtney's.

After that I stamped the main image and cut out the bit I wanted. At this point I was a bit worried you wouldn't be able to see the image over the background so tried stamping and embossing in black which gave a really intense image.

I picked out this set of France's because I thought it would be fun to add pattern to the open flower image - also a reason for picking the Ink and the Dog set - it had a small patterned stamp.

Using the open mask, I added my pattern to the two open flowers.

To finish I stamped some of the leaves in ink and then just drizzled embossing powder round the edges to make them stand out - love these leaves.

Then I just added a few white highlights and layered it all up.

I hope you can see all the designers represented here - perhaps next time I should be a little less predictable and use Seth's stamps as the main image? We could also introduce stencils from each designer as well - now that really would be a challenge!

Ohhhh, check out this cool underwater fusing from Nikki, she's successfully fused fabric with embossing powder! Wonderful colour and those stamps by Gwen are an absolute delight in how versatile they are to work with!

Hi, Nikki here today, from Addicted to Art, with my 'Fused' project - I have used embossing powder to fuse together layers and also embed some fabric.

I have a couple of Gwen Lafleur's stamp sets and couldn't decide which to use so I went with both - Mandala's (EGL01) and Fish (EGL04) - not an obvious combination!

 

 

I started by stamping some mandalas and colouring them in - I used Polychromos Coloured Pencils for  this. On the smaller two I repeated the middle section to build the layers and also added a little rhinestone before adding versamark and heat embossing with clear powder. I repeated this a couple of times to build it up. You can see some of the embossed surface has cracked here - but I went with it. (The downside of doing it on flexible card - the hardened embossed surface cam crack if you are not careful.)

Having coloured the larger mandala I heat embossed before adhering some material and the fish - then added more layers of embossing.

My background is a wooden panel. 

I layered PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylics with my brayer before adding some additional stamping - the fish from EGL04 and the sea plants from ESC10.

I added my fused mandala's over some twine using foam pads to elevate them slightly. I love the glossy effect over the very matt background - bringing the mandalas and fish more to the forefront.

2020 Topic 9: Collage It

Helen has taken the grunge out and replaced it with gorgeous. She's looked creatively at one of Seth's stamp sets and created something new with it. The collaging is light and delicate and I love the use of special fabric to give a real softness to the cards.

Hi everyone, it's Helen with you today, and I'd like to share with you a project on the theme Collage It.
I'm using some of the new Seth Apter stamps but I didn't want an industrial, grungy feel. In fact when I first saw this stamp set, I saw a flower and a stalk, so that's what I went with. I decided to make the collage elements myself and chose three shades of blue paint for the backgrounds which I painted, stamped, stencilled and then ripped up!

Get your paints ready.

And brayer onto white card.

I love this Sara Naumann stencil, especially that little leaf spray.

I've used the same paint colours to stamp and stencil.

I thought I might want some blocks of colour, so made this as well.

Then you can start tearing bits of the collage that you like and arranging them on your card. I could spend hours doing this - it's very therapeutic!

I didn't want to use a black inkpad on this as it seemed too heavy, so I've stamped in colour. My leaves are cut out from a green stamped pattern.

I decided to add scraps of fabric and wool to mine - the fabric is just pieces of dresses that my girls wore as toddlers - that's going back a bit! Here are some more cards all made from the same background.

I hope these cards show that you can create any effect you like with any stamp set just by varying your colours and what you put with it. I've gone for a pretty, clean look, not something you might first of all think of with this style of stamp set. I love a bit of a challenge and experimenting with different ways of using things, getting the stamps to really work for me.

If you don't want to make your own backgrounds, pull out some bits of patterned paper - if you're like me, you'll have a drawer full of scraps. You can then layer them up and use the stamps and stencil over the top to pull them together.
