2022 Topic 13 : Fabric {by Autumn Clark} with Tracy Scott stencils

Hi everyone, it's Autumn Clark from SewPaperPaint with you today, and I'm here to share with you some fabric covered travelers notebooks I created from scratch using a selection of stencils designed by Tracy Scott.  I love Tracy's fabulous stamps and stencils and thought it would be such fun to use them to design my own artsy material.  I hope you will find this process interesting and will be inspired to print some fabric of your own!

I thought long and hard and hard about this topic and how to represent it with Tracy's gorgeous designs, and though I could have used stencil brushes and painted the fabric directly, I knew that would take much more time and take some of the spontaneity out of the process.  But if you don't have a gel printing plate, I would encourage you to try that method, because I'm sure the results would be amazing.

My first step, which I always love, was to choose a color palette with my PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics.  This time I picked a range of brights, including Captain PeacockSargassoSlimedBananaPrawnBougainvillea and Cloud Nine.  I knew I wanted to work with some vivid, happy colors, and since they were I made them do a little dance for you!  I hope these cheery colors alone will inspire your creativity!

I gathered some torn pieces of soft, pre-washed cotton fabric and my 8x10" gel printing plate.  I wanted a layered look and picked quite a range of PaperArtsy stencils by Tracy Scott, including PS126PS155PS160PS189PS199 and PS322

Now, this may seem like quite a lot of stencils, but as you will see in the video below (or HERE), I worked quickly and was able to get a lot of interesting color combinations and varied patterns throughout the process.  I tried to speed it up a little, but not make you nauseous!  Ha ha!  The whole process took me about 35 minutes.  My advice is not to overthink your layers and to work quickly and intuitively.

Now for a closer look at how those stencils altered the fabric...This piece showcases PaperArtsy stencil by Tracy Scott (PS210) as the focal image.

The next sample shows PaperArtsy stencil by Tracy Scott (PS125) among the layers.

Finally, the third piece shows PaperArtsy stencil by Tracy Scott (PS089) in that gorgeous Bougainvillea!

As you can see from the video, I added some base colors, then layered the stenciling.  Next I assembled my covers I needed to construct a sturdy base so I cut a piece of cardstock to 8 1/2 x 7 3/4" and scored at 3 7/8, 4, 4 1/8, 4 1/4, 4 3/8, 4 1/2, 4 5/8".

I used a glue stick to adhere my fabric to the scored card (directly to the card, not the fabric).  Then I used a pencil and a clear ruler to draw 1/4" border around the cardstock as a cutting guide.  I would have used a rotary cutter, but I was out of sharp blades, so I used my fabric shears.   Alternately, I could have folded a larger allowance before stitching for a more finished look along the edges, but I really wanted that artsy feel with the frayed edges.

Once my edges were trimmed, I took the pieces to the sewing machine and stitched a double border around the edges and frayed the edges thereafter.

At this point I folded my covers to see what the result would be and decided to add in a little contrast.  I picked Tracy Scott mini stamp 64 (EM64) and used PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic in Cloud 9 (FF149) for my stamping.  I considered using Little Black Dress, but was afraid to overpower my backgrounds.  I brayered my paint onto my wee gel printing plate and used it as a "ink pad" for stamping.

To finish my journals, I used a pamphlet stitch with black waxed linen, but let the cords come out (rather than be hidden in the center).  I used these threads to tie on a piece of sari ribbon to use as a wrap closure.  I attached some painted wooden beads to the ends of the waxed linen.

I was really happy with the white stamping over the patterns.  I like the softness, but as I said omitting the gel printing plate and stenciling directly to the fabric would produce richer colors.  I always tend to tone colors down a bit, as a personal preference.  And it was a really fun printing session using a new to me substrate.

The pink background is shows the stenciled colors a bit differently and I really like the effect.  I only wish I had used Tangerine so that one of my journals had an orange background.

Now I will using my stamps to alter the pages within my journals!  It's been fun to let stencils shine on the covers though!

It's not often that I use primarily stencils in my work, because I am a crazed stamper!  Ha ha!  But I hope this post has given you some ideas on how to maximize your stencil stash in a new way. There is an entire group of posts on the PaperArtsy blog dedicated to stencils, which you can find HERE.

Also make sure to scroll through the current topic, fabric, for many ways you can use your stenciled cloth, whether it be another book cover design, an artsy pillow for your studio, or a wall hanging.  I wonder have you printed fabric before?  We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.  If not, I certainly hope you'll give it a try.  What fun awaits!  It's been such fun sharing with you today and I look forward to next time.

xx, Autumn

NEW PaperArtsy Products: Eclectica³ Tracy Scott {April 2020}

 Eclectica³ Collection {Tracy Scott}
April 2020 New Product Announcement

A note from Leandra:
Here they are the long awaited beauties from Tracy. Some of these have been available from those stockists who we saw at Trade-shows in January, but now they are officially released! I'm sure you might have seen some stunning projects using these as Tracy taught with them at the shows, but check out her ideas below!

The gorgeous butterfly design also features on Tracy's new Apron, which sold out in a blink. We have plenty more on order, but as the fabric printing company is closed for the unforeseeable we have to be patient to wait for more to arrive.

Hi everyone, Tracy here

I'm super excited to share with you my newest release for PaperArtsy. 3 stamps and coordinating stencils.

Ive been consistently asked for leaves when designing stamps,  to go with all the wonderful florals I have in my collections so i knew the time had come and that they would feature heavily in this release.
Of course there was no way I was only designing leaf stamps and of course a butterfly had to feature in there somewhere and my goodness... what a butterfly !!
When I designed the recent mini background stamps in my march release I had so many designs left over I just knew that they had to go into a combined stamp set (all my favourites all in one place)
I hope you like checking out my sample ideas, grab a cuppa and enjoy....

Let's check out these new products, some ideas from each set and a couple of projects.

  New Stamps
Price: RRP £18.74 +VAT
Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

Eclectica³ Tracy Scott Set 39 (ETS39)

So first up is the fabulous butterfly, I had so many ideas for this stamp I literally didn't know where to start!!
Of course having lots of spare time on my hands at the moment like most of us do, I have been doing some of those odd jobs that I have been putting off for ages and one of those was clearing out old clothes and that's where the idea for this project stemmed from.... Denim skirt + fresco paints + posca pens and this little beauty was born.... not sure whether to leave it as is or turn it into an apron?.....lovely way to spend the day and recycling too !!!!

This butterfly stamp makes a complete statement on its own with no need to add colour,  if you know my work you know that I love to add a black and white focal image to a lot of my brightly coloured journal pages, I just love the contrast between the two.

So for the  next project I wanted to try something completely different. I found some clear shrink plastic when I was tidying my art room (I'm ashamed to say it's been there for years unopened.... hangs head!!) so I knew I had to give it a try, stamping and colouring before shrinking in the oven, i really wasn't sure what I was going to do with it once it was done and in the end settled on a simple card project.  It was fun and imperfect and i will definitely do this again with some of my other stamps.

I love the way that this stamp can be made to look so different just by changing up the process, adding the white pen over the top gives a hand drawn vibe that i really love and it goes so well as a focal for existing stamps in my collection.

Eclectica³ Tracy Scott Set 40 (ETS40)

Most of you probably know by now that I love to make a mini book, and this stamp set was crying out to be used for this. Using the flower for my main focal image coloured with pencils and layered up for a 3D look and mixed with the black and white leaves added to hang on the side of the book, I think this is my favourite so far!

Did I tell you I like a black and white focal image?.... I believe I might have, how stunning does this flower look layered up on this lace cut journal page?.... with the addition of the white pen work I am just in heaven...

Eclectica³ Tracy Scott Set 41 (ETS41)

Oh I do love a mark-making stamp and when I released my mini's in march I had so many images left over that I knew I had to put them together as a set!
When I feel my creative mojo waning, one of the things that seems to lift me out and gets me creating again is making painted papers.... the freedom of not having to think about an end project and just play definitely does the trick for me.
These stamps are just perfect for this and so much fun to play with....
And did you notice that I had used one of these stamps for my black and white background on my 'shrink plastic butterfly card'.... go on, go back and check it out...

New Stencils
Regular Size: 6.5" x 7" (16 x 18cm) Price: RRP £4.60 + VAT

PaperArtsy Stencil 187 (PS187)

So another thing I found whilst sorting out my art room was my collection of alcohol ink products, and again I am ashamed to say that they don't see the light of day very often so decided that they would be my focus for most of my stencil projects...

I just love the way that the colours flow together to give an imperfect image, the trick is waiting till they are dry enough to keep the shape of the stencil... but its a learning process (see the card below!)

And to be honest even when you don't leave it long enough and the inks flow together you can still get some cool effects like the card above.

PaperArtsy Stencil 188 (PS188)

So for this project in my journal, I already had a painted page that had a hole cut in it (anyone who has been to my classes would have see this but I just didn't know what to do with it to finish it off!)
Well this stencil was the perfect fit for the hole, tracing the stencil onto acetate (another craft room find!!) and colouring it with black paint pen gives me a perfect window through to the following page.

More alcohol ink play, I think this is my favourite of them all and I'm itching to create and alcohol ink journal now... well at least I have plenty of time at the moment... I'll add it to my list of things  that I want to create!

PaperArtsy Stencil 189 (PS189)

So I had a play with this one in a few different colour variations, I just love how you can use the same stencil but with the alcohol inks you get a completely different look every time.

New Lace Booklets
Size: A4  (21 x 29.7cm, approx 8" x 11.5")
Price: RRP £6.30 + VAT

As you know, Tracy has been teaching hand cut journal pages for the past year or two, and so we decided to translate some of her designs into a laser-cut book. The original idea of a large journal evolved into several smaller versions, making each more manageable and super-nice project size. Each booklet has 2 spreads that can be layered up with both booklets together, or used as independent signatures. We will be producing a cover to hold all these signatures, but you also can use them alone or tipped into existing journals.

Tracy Scott Lace Booklet 1 (TSLB01)

Tracy Scott Lace Booklet 2 (TSLB02)

I am absolutely thrilled for the release of my first lace cut booklets, these have been in my head and in the planning for so long I was starting to think they would never see the light of day... they are perfect for anyone that loves the look of my cut pages but either hasn't got the dexterity or even the will to cut them for themselves.
There are so many things that you can do with these, the possibilities are endless and every time you decorate a booklet you can make it look completely different.  I will be showing you more examples of what I have done with these in my livestream in the PaperArtsy People facebook group at 7:30pm GMT tonight so please come and join me there.

 Mariposa Floral Mandala

So for this project ive used a mix of stamp sets ETS39 & ETS40, did you recognise the butterfly wings that i have used as flower petals?... I know!...who knew!.. They create the most fabulous large 'blousy' bloom and look stunning as the centre to my 3D mandala.
I am just so in love with this project.

I really hope that you have enjoyed checking in today and seeing all my ideas for these new releases, I really would love to see what you all come up with and you can find me on the following socials.....

Instagram: www.instagram.com/tr4cy1973

I also have a facebook group dedicated to art created with my products or in my classes which is Tracy Scott Creative Cafe
It is full of inspiration and i would love to see you there.

Teaching Schedule:
Although in-person teaching is currently suspended, I am working with several retailers to offer live-stream classes, details of which will follow soon so keep an eye out for those !!

Take care and thanks for joining me today

Tracy
