2017 Topic 7: Found Objects

Tonight Kim starts our 'found objects' topic with this little hanging piece. A great combination of found elements with a stamp that perfectly complements the theme.

Hi Guys, it is Kim Dellow back on the PaperArtsy blog and I've got to say this is one of my all time favourite themes because I am a compulsive scavenger! I love found objects and I often come back home with my pockets full of rusty bits that find themselves abandoned in the street. 

So for my share I have combined a street-found washer and a large metal grommet with part of an old comic book page to make this little hanger using the electro-heart from the EKD04 stamp set that I designed for PaperArtsy.

I do love playing about with how we view projects and I love the way this one changes depending on if the light source is behind it or in front of it.

The old rusty washer and large metal grommet are not just part of the design, and fun to look at, but they are functional too.

I've used wire to make the hanger as wire is one of my favourite additions to my three dimensional projects.

2017 #4 Little Door {by Kim Dellow}

2017 Topic 4: Doors, Windows, Architecture

It's a bit of a treat when one of our Stamp Designers drops in to share their ideas with us all. Today we are treated to a splash of Kim Dellow colour. Kim creates in a style that see's her re-cycling, re-inventing, re-purposing, and there is often a bold pop of colour in the mix too. Enjoy.

Hi Guys, Kim Dellow here today with my Architecture-themed project. I thought it would be fun to mix some different styles into this grungy make. 

So I used the vintage style HP1601...

... and paired it with the more illustrative style of my own set EKD06. (stockists here)

It's fun to mix styles in the same piece, for the grunge look I wanted it to be quite raw and messy and used a black modeling paste through parts of the retro PS040 mask.

I also loved the idea of having something interactive so cut out the HP1601 door and layered it so that it would open and close as needed.

So that I could place something hidden behind the door I built up dimension with cardboard.

NEW PA PRODUCTS {Kim Dellow}

Hi Everyone, Leandra here with some amazing new stamps by {Kim Dellow}...

Tonight we have a lovely new stamp set from Kim Dellow which compliments perfectly her first 2 stamp sets designed earlier in the year. Let me show you those first, then introduce you to the new kid on the block.

Hey all, Kim Dellow here with my latest stamp release for PaperArtsy. For this little release I have come up with a set that matches the first two, good things come in threes, right?

In this new set there is another texture stamp, because I LOVE texture stamps. Some interesting flowers that some (Leandra!) might call retro, but I think I might go with vaguely alien. What do you think?

I've also included another little creature, a little lion this time. But slightly different for this set is a long pattern stamp that I am really excited to see all the different ways you think of to use!

Shall we get on with some samples then?

Project One: {Lion Shine Card}

My first sample tonight is a little greeting card. This is a very clean and simple make and if you have the time to do some masking you could easily make it a single layer card.

Step 1: 

I've used the texture stamp from the new set to stamp the rounded rectangle bubble background. I inked it up with Ranger Archival Chrome Yellow in the centre and Ranger Archival Viridian around the outside before stamping. 

Step 2: 

I then stamped the word with Ranger Archival Jet Black vertically next to the right-hand side of the rounded rectangle bubble background.

Step 3: 

The lion was stamped and then coloured with PrismaColor pencils then I cut him out and stuck him to the card with 3D foam.

Project Two: {All Awash Card}

For project two I thought I would play with a resist and the PaperArtsy Infusions to add the colour.

Step 1: 

I used white embossing powder and heat embossed the long pattern stamp along the left-had side of the card front.

Step 2:

I placed a couple of drops of the PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Paint Drying Retarder on a plastic surface and sprinkled a very small amount of the Royal Blood Infusions into the drops. I repeated this process to make another wash of the Golden Sands Infusions.

You can use water to make the infusions wash instead but I found the Drying Retarder slowed the brown of the Walnut crystals coming through so that you have more time to work with the colour for the wash.

Step 3: 

I then used the two pools of colour like a watercolour wash, first adding the Royal Blood over the embossed image with a brush. Then adding a couple of dabs of the Golden sands before the blue wash was dry and letting it drip and move through the blue wash.

You get a whole range of colours with these infusion washes, the blue of the Royal Blood mixing green with the Golden Sands, but also you can see some of the yellow of the Golden Sands peeking through. Then of course you have the intense brown of the walnut crystals adding a vintage feel to the overall effect.

Project Three: {Shine Tag}

For my last sample I've made a tag and built up a bit of dimension using the heart circle stamp and one of the alien flower stalks on a gesso resist background.

Step 1: 

For this tag I started by stamping the texture stamp with gesso and once dry I then made a wash with Fresco Finish paints and the PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Paint Drying Retarder to colour the background. I used Teresa Green, Granny Smith and Blueberry.

Step 2: 

I then stamped the flower stem in paint on a paint wash background. I also did the same with the round stamp, first stamping with Ranger Archival Jet Black ink on a Cheesecake covered cardstock then with Coral paint on a Bubble gum covered cardstock.

Step 3: 

To finish I cut out each element and built it up on the flower stamped in paint on the background and added the sentiment stamped with the Jet Black ink on Cheesecake covered cardstock. The final touches where added with a pen.

NEW PA Products {Feb 2016} Kim Dellow

Hi Everyone, 

I know, boy are we getting busy tonight here on the PA Blog, 2 massive annoucements! The next lovely designer we have added to the PA family is the fabulous Kim Dellow. We are thrilled to share her new stamps for 2016 with you!

Kim is a full-time freelance crafter who has long been writing for numerous craft publications in the UK, and has a great number of crafting years under her belt. She is one of those very versatile people who can turn her hand to most styles and genres with ease, so to narrow down her skill set for some stamps was an interesting process. You may know Kim for her 'show your face' feature on her blog every Friday which has been encouraging everyone to draw faces,  and then draw some more to master all kinds of ways to depict faces.

While discussing design options, we stumbled across a minimal-retro style that Kim immediately explored with gusto, and here we are with 2 rather minimalist stamp sets with a slight hint of geometric style about them too. I really like where this is going, they are different, and I think they will work for mixed media as well as tags or cards so easily.

Kim's hand drawn style shines through as clean, but not too perfect, and both sets have coordinating elements, despite one clearly being circular and the other more square in style.

Hi everyone, Kim Dellow here and I am thrilled to finally be able to share my new stamps designed for PaperArtsy with you today, as well as the amazing work from my super-talented support crew.

So welcome to my first two PaperArtsy stamp sets! Leandra was amazing and picked up on the retro elements from some of my scatty, all over the place sketches and we honed them into these two fun and quirky geometric-themed sets, which I love! 

I am a bit of a dabbler in all styles and types of craft, as Leandra says, and I'm really pleased we could develop some sets that have a little bit of everything! There are background stamps, focal point stamps, texture stamps and phrase stamps, so hopefully you will find these two sets very versatile. I think when you have a look at what the team came up with then you will see what I mean.

 

So shall we get started?


First up is Keren Baker.  

Keren has a fabulous clean and simple style that works really well with the minimalist style of these stamps. I just love how she has used the stamped elements to build little stories with a wonderful sense of fun to them too.

Kim says: I love the way Keren has used one of the large flowers from the EKD02 set as a balloon for the little birds to cling too. How cute is that?

Next up we have Tracy Evans.

Tracy has given us a different look again. Her lovely paint style has really demonstrated how even though these stamps have a minimalistic look you can easily adapt them to more arty or painty projects too.

Tracy says: I love these quirky birds and flowers they work on their own or combined with other stamps and will be something I use over and over. I want to try a journal page soon with these images using lots of colour and also in a monochromatic palette.

Tracy says: This sample was all about having fun, messy fingers, paint and texture, something I love and these images are just perfect for that. I would also like to challenge myself to do some CAS samples too as I know these will work beautifully and make a bold statement on their own.

Our third contributor tonight is Lauren Hatwell.

Lauren's vision has shown how you can stretch these stamps and with a bit of imagination take them just that bit further. I adore her creative brain and could happily go around seeing the world the way she does for a day!

Geared Up for Success using EKD01/02 by Lauren Hatwell

Lauren Says: This is what I want from a stamp set. Versatility equals value for money. The more I can do with it the better. Every single element in both sets is a multi-tasker.

Right, my turn now and I have some step outs showing the process to share with you too. For my makes I've used the Cheesecake, Chartreuse, Hey Pesto, Autumn Fire and South Pacific Fresco paints.

Project One: 'Enjoy The Little Things' Scene Panel using stamp sets EKD01/02

For my first project I decided to make a little summer scene using masking and stencilling techniques. I thought that the large circle on a stem stamp in the EKD01 set would make a fabulous sun too so this Summer-inspired make was born!

Step One: I started by stamping out the two clouds close to each other on a panel of white cardstock and then again on spare paper to cut out into masks. I inked up one of the large circle stamps then covered the stalk with repositionable tape before stamping it over the masked clouds.

Step Two: I added more clouds to the top of the panel then stamped out the smaller circles on stalks a few times along the bottom of the panel to make a continuous line of circle flowers. 

Step Three: I then covered the clouds and sun with paper masks and used a stenciling brush to stipple the paint over the top part of the panel. The stippling gives it a great textures but if you prefer you can go for a more blended look using a sponge or by swirling the brush.

Step Four: For the bottom part of the scene I used a smaller stenciling brush to add some colour to the flowers bed. I didn't bother to mask the row of circles but just worked carefully through the space with the brush. Then I painted the sun and the flowers with an ordinary brush. Finally, I slightly curved the phrase and stamped and cut it out to stick along the tops of the flowers with 3D foam.

Project Two: Little Hedgehog Card using stamp sets EKD01/02

This next make is all about stamping with paints and building up stamping texture. It is one of my favourite things to do at the moment - stamping with paints. But don't forget to wash your stamps as soon as you have stamped with them!

Step One: Using a brayer I added some thin colour with the paints to a piece of white cardstock I then used this as a base to stamp on. I used the concentric circle stamp to add some texture to the background.

Step Two: Next I stamped the row of rectangular shapes on stalks in paint and painted each of the heads with a brush.

Step Three: Then I stamped the hedgehogs with the Little Black Dress paint and painted them as well before cutting them out and sticking them to the panel with 3D foam.

Step Four: To finish I stamped out the 'Enjoy The Little Things' phrase with the Little Black Dress paint and cut the phrase into words to stick to the panel with 3D foam.

I have just got to say a huge THANK YOU to each sample designer! I am overwhelmed by the amazing job everyone did with their samples. Each designer has bought her own amazingly creative vision to the stamps and I just love the different ways they have been used.
