A gorgeous vintage box from Jennie, she has repurposed dress making patterns, as well as rye-cracker wrapping! You shall have to read to find out! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Jennie (Live The Dream) with you today with a project for our current challenge that uses some old dress patterns.

During the 80s and 90s I made a lot of my own clothes, although nothing really fitted very well and it was more to do with not having shops here in Shetland than a love of dressmaking! My school Needlework report describes me as a "great plodder" ........ so there was little talent! I have a huge pile of now rather dated patterns so thought I would dig a few out for this current challenge to cover this small paper mache box. 

In hindsight I wished I had gone for some of the older patterns which were nice brown colour, but I did find that when I adhered them to the box the paper I did choose became quite translucent.

HP1801

I am using the new July Release Hot Picks HP1801 as I just knew there would be plenty of small areas in all of these stamps which would work for this project.These Hot Picks stamps are available exclusively from PaperArtsy stockists, see here for details.

I found some quite large areas on the dress patterns which had not been printed and used my stamps without a block to stamp here and there. I then tore pieces small enough to adhere to the box. I used Potting Soil Ranger Archival Ink as these pieces were going to be glued and needed a permanent ink.

Trouser patterns give the most area of unprinted paper! I stamped a largish piece to go inside the box.

As you can see once adhered to the box with Ranger Multi Medium (Matte),  the paper became translucent and took the colour of the paper mache box.

This was the base box. The inside was painted with Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic Eggshell - you can see my favourite line up behind !!!

I left everything to dry well overnight and then covered the lid and sides of the box with a crackle glaze. This took reasonably well, but I did highlight the cracks with a smearing of Potting Soil Ranger Archival Ink.

The sides of the box were embossed and I rubbed a little gold wax over the top but it wasn't easy to pick up the embossed areas and so the gold has gone into the wider crackle but hopefully it all adds to the vintage look!

I decorated the lid with some of my usual suspects. I am always on the lookout for different papers to stamp on and the white paper is in fact the wax paper that surrounds my breakfast rye crackers! 

An interesting experiment and given the pile of paper dress patterns I have the technique will no doubt be making more appearances in the future! I do like the way the paper is quite translucent when glued and this could be quite useful on different coloured and textured backgrounds - more experimentation required!

2018 #17 Colour - A Box of Eggs: An Actual Box of Eggs! with ECF/HP {by Alison Bomber}

This is the perfect end to a great topic! Trick eggs!! With Halloween coming...I'm sure you could have some fun with this idea!  But how pretty do they look! Alison would no doubt do a great job marketing egg packaging ! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Alison with you today from Words and Pictures with a very literal but quirky take on the theme.  As soon as I read the topic title, the only thing my brain would consider was an actual box of eggs... and I've found it's better to yield to my imagination when it get holds of something, rather than to try and fight it.  So here are two boxes of eggs for you, created with some of Courtney's gorgeous new Fresco Finish Chalk Paint colours.  They've made their way straight into my top 20 Fresco colours, no question!

Originally, I'd considered using real eggs (blowing out the centres and decorating the eggshells), but then I decided they'd be too fragile, so I sourced some plastic eggs to play with and gave them a couple of coats of gesso to start with.  (By the way, somebody ought to tell the egg-makers that almost nobody wants to buy eggs in packets of five - whose idea was that?!)

I then had a lovely time layering up the palest of Courtney's new colours, using a natural sponge to apply them.

Some are pure Seaglass (oh happy day, what a glorious colour!), some are pure Eggshell (but of course)...

... but most have at least two if not three colours sponged delicately over them to create the natural colour variation you find in eggs.

Surf's Up worked beautifully to add a touch of "duck egg blue" to both the Seaglass and the Eggshell versions, and Koala was perfect for adding a slightly darker shadowing to some of the eggs.

I then used an old toothbrush to flick some Taupe onto the eggs for that mottled, speckled look.

I love how this brings them zinging to life.  As you know, I love my spatter, and I'll admit I got a little carried away here!  You should have seen the craft mat by the time I'd finished.  I had thought of adding some extra texture using stamps at this point, but I decided I preferred my eggs au naturel.

However, eggs need eggboxes, right? So the crackled stamp from Eclectica³ Courtney Franich 03 which I'd thought of using on the eggs (cracks on an egg... an irresistible connection) made its way onto the eggboxes instead.

The half-dozen box is just a regular eggbox, and the little four-way one was from some chocolate eggs last Easter.  I hung onto it because... well, you know why... and here it is.  (I must be the only person ever to have been okay with the plastic eggs arriving in bags of five - it's simply the wrong number for eggs!)

I created the labels with stamps from the new Hot Picks 1801 set.

I used the original labels as templates to cut my card and sponged on some more of the Eggshell and Seaglass paints.  I also used the Eggshell to liven up the cardboard boxes themselves.

The cockerel was perfect for a box of eggs, so he was a simple choice.  I added some extra text around him and the word stickers tell you all you need to know about this particular creative process.

For the other label, I indulged in a little bit of alteration.  The poppy seed head...

... became an egg, with the help of a little paint and penwork.  Okay, it's not perfect, but then imperfection is to be embraced, no?

And I love the added imperfection of Courtney's great cracks and crannies stamp all over the eggboxes.

I used Hickory Smoke Archival, so they're fairly subtle, but they add just the right extra interest to the background, I think.

So there you have it... some of Courtney's new Box of Eggs colours used to create an actual box (or two) of eggs.  I know we're a long way from Easter, and at first I was a little concerned at how my mind was fixated on these eggs.  But as I was playing, I found that my mind knew exactly what it was doing.

There are all sorts of big plans being put into action just now for me, new ventures and possibilities opening up... some of them still very much in the shell, but some of them with definite signs of hatching.  So sometimes you do just have to "trust your crazy ideas", and you find that maybe they're not so crazy after all.

Having said that, how perfect will these colours be for home decor projects come the spring and Eastertide?  And in the meantime, they're a fabulous addition to the Fresco Finish Chalk Paint range for all sorts of neutral, pastel, gentle projects.  You'll definitely be seeing them in action round my way a lot.

2018 #17 Colour - A Box of Eggs: East and West with HP's {by Carol Fox}

Ohhh Loving all the intricate details in the tag from Carol! Those Hot Picks look awesome and she's found real eggs!! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Carol with you today, and I'd like to share with you a tag I have made using a set of the latest Hot Picks stamps. For so many reasons I was drawn to these stamps. I adored the Cockerel on the weather vane and the little quote of 100% recycled art really caught my eye, it is perfect for this project as my tag is cut from a cereal box. I often cut up cereal boxes to use as they gesso really well and they can take a lot of paint and other media before they start to  curl up and they are a nice weight to sew through on my machine, so these stamps are a win win, great for the theme of eggs withe cockerel and it is 100% recycled. 

I used Fresco Finish paint colours Eggshell, Koala, Surf's Up, Blah Mange, Seaglass and Twilight from the latest release on my project.

 

Here I layered up Eggshell, Koala and sea glass before using Twilight to stamp the umbrella stamp from one of the Latest Hot Picks HP1801EZ

 

I now mixed up Surf's up and Blah Mange (I love that name) to make a soft lilac which I applied through  an Emma Godfrey Mini stencil PM007 it was not until I had used this I realised it looks egg shaped on my tag.

I used the stamps on HP1801EZ to create a background on my tag.

I re-stamped the top of the arrow part of one of the stamps as I really liked this feature, but it had ended up being mostly covered by my image, so I just masked off my already stamped image and added the arrow to the top of it. 

I coloured some parts of the stamped images to pop them off the tag a little and bring the colours of my egg images into the finished tag a little better.

As I said previously I love the 100% recycled quote and it just fills up this space nicely.

I do love a colour challenge as you can really just play and see where it all goes. I did not start this with any images in mind other that my main lady, but then once I got the background it made me remember the little paper eggs in my scrap box and the layout then really came from that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and I hope you do when you join in with the challenge.

 Hot Picks Collection {by Mark Franich}

Hot Picks stamps are often the style that people identify as truly 'PaperArtsy'. Our in-house designs created by Mark, since 2003 through to today, are often designed from vintage elements. 

Initially under the Ink and the dog label (a collaboration with Nea Nygard, from Finland), and subsequently since 2010, he progressed to a larger format stamp to meet the needs of journalling and mixed media enthusiasts.

Generally he creates collages, sometimes from familiar elements you may have seen in other compositions, which offers continuity across the collection. We never discontinue stamps here at PaperArtsy, so these new stamps will fit perfectly with what has come before.

Below I share how to make an oxide ink background like this, and its ever so effective as a fast card. I do find that the new Versafine Clair inks stamp better over oxide ink backgrounds than Archival. They seem to sit much blacker on top of the oxide zone, I find the pigment of the oxide ink tends to 'cloud' the archival ink slightly.

It's official... I am loving Courtney's new Mustard Pickle paint colour...and here is that fab wheel stamp again. Another three-element card that really stands out. Quick and easy but striking and individual.

A quick technique below using oxide re-inkers that you might find handy to try. With this I don't do a whole lot of drying and blotting, I tend to take one print and step away. Mind you, we had a power cut when I was making these samples for this post, so I had no heat to use anyway!

Project: Let's Fly

It's quite surprising how you can make fun backgrounds super-fast with Oxide Inks. These are perfect for collage style stamps such as Hot Picks, and can be a super fast way to create.

I find the re-inkers so much more useful than the ink pads, and they are better value too. A re-inker has enough ink for 2.5 ink pads, and you can make your own ink pad  with Cut 'n' Dry foam and store in a snap lock bag if you wish. (Of course this also allows you to custom make ink pad colours and sizes too!). For ink application direct to craft sheet, these are ideal. No big splodges, controlled amount of colour...it's a dream! Also ideal for the gel plate too...so, let me show you how one dabble gives you a few backgrounds.

3 colours applied onto the craft sheet.

Spritz 5-6 times with water.

Sometimes I will disperse the dots into splats with a palette knife.
It helps to blend the colours and soften the ink out a bit...

To get a print down the centre of the A6 card, I bent it gently and dipped the bend directly into the wet ink.

 

Then I took a second print (image left).
And a third print by pressing card 3 directly onto wet card 2 (image on the right).

Back to the craft sheet which now looks like this (left). I took another print, this time keeping the entire A6 card (dip #4) flat. Sometimes I will spritz more water if the ink is looking too dry, before the 'press'.

And finally a 5th print. This time I spritzed a light misting of more water to further soften.
 

Next step I will use any leftovers for stamping and flicking. For oomph, I added one teeny tiny drop of the blue re-inker onto the soft colour puddle remaining, spritzed a bit more water, and then using the Timmy splatter brush I could then add some colour splats easily to the blank parts of all my cards.

Oh, and I also stamped some dots that were inked up from the puddle too. Love the serendipity of how the orange ink emerged from a previous project. 

And as you know, a bit more stamping in black and blue (Versafine Clair Ink) and the project is super-simple, but complete. Just a bit of matting and layering to finish it off.

I'm so pleased that Mark has made a couple more stamps for us! He's been a busy chap of late, but lucky us that he found some time!It did take a bit of nagging though, hopefully thi will get him in the zone for another round soon!
