2020 #11 Handmade Pocket Journal with ETS {by Autumn Clark}

2020 Topic 11: Calming Colours

Can you have a calming feast? Well I reckon Autumn has brought one for us. Just using the photos alone, there are so many fabulous ideas and plenty of inspiration to make your own soothing journal.
~ Keren

Hi everyone, it's Autumn Clark from SewPaperPaint with you today, and I'd like to share with you a great way to use up a day's worth of gelli prints by making a useful little pocket journal.

I decided to stitch together a few prints, mainly because I needed a new journal to work though some thoughts and I was sure that our calming colors topic would be a perfect place to start!  Using light colors for your prints give a great backdrop for handwriting and layering, so lets get to the details.

I simply cannot put this journal down!  I've been adding new thoughts daily and look forward each day to revisiting it.  The concept is easy to replicate.  I picked out the thinnest cardstock in my stash and cut it in half, then used my 8x10" gelli plate with a beautiful array of PaperArtsy Fresco Chalk Finish Acrylics in Taupe, Blush, Concrete, Hint of Mint, Sage and Waterfall and made a batch of two-sided prints.

This palette conjures the essence of escape for me!  My half-page cardstock pieces were about the same size as a particular book I use to brayer off my paint during the gel printing process.  I love using a book for this purpose so I can incorporate the text, as well as the color, into my finished work, in this case as full pages in my journal.

I kept some prints with solid color and also used several stencils and masks to get a variety of patterns/textures.  Those include PS095, PS106, PS108, PS092, PM006 and PM007.

I carefully decided on the order of my prints, mixing in the book pages, then used the three-hole pamphlet stitch to group them all together.  There are many advantages of this stitch for a journal.  1. The pages all lay flat when opened.  2.  The stitching can easily be removed if pages need to be added or taken away.  3.  It is incredibly simple to achieve, but the result is quite a strong binding.

As if gel printing and playing in paints isn't fun enough, the best part is adding the stamping, journaling and ephemera.

I focused on PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Tracy Scott} Collection ETC39, ETC31, ETC27 and ETC25, all over-sized insects and flowers, perfect to make a big impact on a small journal.

I have always loved making art from "junk", so turning my least loved cardstock, an old book and a few drops of paint into a journal I can treasure brings me so much joy.

I have found that journaling even the most mundane thought can clear my mind to make room for more important things.  I find myself picking up one of my bottles of Frescos and finger painting here and there and love that I can continue to build layers and interest as I go.

This will not be the last of this type of journal for me!  In fact, I am inspired to continue in this size and colorway and make a group of these journals to use as inserts in an even larger journal.  Perhaps this lofty goal will encourage me to continue with daily journal entries and promote better mental health, and in return more creativity.  Do you find that you are more creative when you've actively reducing stress in your life?  I think it may true for us all and hope you will try this process for yourself.  I just know you will find the practice a rewarding one.

Until next time,
Autumn Clark

NEW PaperArtsy Products: September 2019 {Eclectica³ Tracy Scott}

 Eclectica³ Collection {Tracy Scott}
September 2019 New Product Announcement

A note from Leandra:
You are in for a wonderful treat today! Stamps, stencils and paint. I'm sure you'll agree, Tracy's samples and ideas are stunning. As this post publishes, Tracy will be mid-air on her way to teach at several of our stockists in Australia with these beauties (Details here) I bet those students will be absolutely thrilled to be the first to have fun with all these beauties!

Hi everyone, Tracy here.

I'm super excited to share with you my newest release for PaperArtsy. 3 stamps and 3 coordinating stencils.
As with my last release in June, I am finding that I am more and more inspired by vintage botanical images at the moment and when I realised that my interpretation and drawing skills were very much better than I imagined them to be I thought why not?

Most of you know that I am an avid art journaler and although I have designed these stamps with this in mind I am sure you will agree that they are super versatile and will be equally at home on a card, scrapbook layout or home décor project.

Today and Tomorrow you will see ideas with these stamps from myself and Clare Messenger, one of the Team PA regular Bloggers. You can also see plenty of activity on PaperArtsy's Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest. (links at the foot of this post) So no matter what your preferred social media platform, we will be sharing with you!

Let's check out these new beauties, some ideas from each set and a couple of projects.

  New Stamps
Price: RRP £18.74 +VAT
Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

Eclectica³ Tracy Scott Set 29 (ETS29)

I love the idea of mixing up a modern funky background with the botanical elegance of these stamps and find a really good way to achieve a harmony between the two is to leave the stamped images in black and white,  this ensures that they don't clash with the bright and beautiful colours and they bring a certain elegance to the projects don't you think?

Eclectica³ Tracy Scott Set 30 (ETS30)

I love the idea of being able to use my stamps in an alternative way to how they would originally be perceived and one of my favourite things to create are mandalas!... so why not combine the two?
The small flower and leaf on this set worked perfectly on this bright and beautiful painted mandala. Stamping the flower several times and trimming the edge to follow the lines of the painted circle gives a very strong and striking design element to this mandala and what about the funky leaf shape that was left over from trimming the flower?... well I turned that into a cool scallop design that I added to the green painted circle...nothing is wasted!

After the new release in June, I already knew that I wanted to add more large flower designs into the collection and what an absolute beauty this sunflower is.  I like to be able to stamp and layer my designs and this one is no exception.
Lots of possibilities her to cut and layer multiple times to create a real 3D element on your pages, cards or layouts.
Although I am a huge fan of leaving my flowers black and white this one was just calling out to be coloured and is a stunning contrast against my brand new paint colours in shades if purple and blue (you can see more about those further below).

Eclectica³ Tracy Scott Set 31 (ETS31)

Well I don't believe you can ever have enough flowers so for my last set for this release I have added a couple of mid sized flowers to the collection which are always a useful addition including one with leaves!!
Of course the leaves can be removed from the flower as you can see in my art journal page above!...the leaves have been stamped, coloured and cut out separately so I could add them to the page to add a trailing effect (I'm now thinking I need more leaves in my life,  mmm next time maybe!)
My second sample uses the flower with the leaves removed and its a perfect size and shape to be layered up onto my larger flower from the June release... I do love a new stamp release to be able to work together with my previous stamp sets. And to complete this piece I added white pen work to the whole thing to tie the sample together... perfect!.

New Stencils
Regular Size: 6.5" x 7" (16 x 18cm) Price: RRP £4.60 + VAT

PaperArtsy Stencil 154 (PS154)

PaperArtsy Stencil 155 (PS155)

PaperArtsy Stencil 156 (PS156)

Oh I do l love a new stencil and the possibilities that it gives. And for this release it was all about the swirls, big bold swirly patterns that are fabulous to add to any background in a variety of ways as I have done in the sample above.
I have stencilled in the traditional way using all of the my new paint colours as well as using the stencils as both a drawing template and cutting template to add some real depth and dimension to the project.

Project One: Botanical Beauties Art Journal Spread

In the project above I've decided to make a double art journal page spread which incorporates some of the new stamp releases shown above combined with the botanicals and insects from the June release... and I'm sure you will agree that they work fantastically well together.
I've tried to use the stamps to the fullest by not only using the full stamped image but by stamping and cutting centres out to create new smaller flowers giving such a variety of different interesting shapes and adding 3D elements to my page, again I've stamped, coloured and cut away the leaves from the flower on ETS31 and added them in various places on my page to add a cascading effect and even though they weren't designed to do this I think they work really well.
A mix of multi-coloured florals as well as single colour and black and white elements make this a striking page sure to bring a smile to your face!

Project Two: Rainbow Florals

So for my second project tonight of course I have chosen another art journal spread, this one is spread over six pages and required a lot of painting in some of my favourite colours and a ton of masking to stamp all of the various flowers so that they appeared to overlap each other, but was so worth it to get the finished effect. Once stamped I cut along all of the edges of the pages so that the layer and colours underneath would be visible revealing a multi colour rainbow collection of pages.
I loved adding all of the white pen work on top to add a cohesive look and as I'm not the best at stamping it's also fabulous for covering any images that I didn't stamp quite so well, its a win win!.

 Project three: Inspiring Quote ATC's

Words and quotes are most definitely something I use on my projects all the time but up until now not really something that I have included into my stamp sets.
I just knew that when both the June and September releases were planned that I really wanted to include some as they just seemed to fit so well with the designs.
I decided to create some ATC cards to show off the quotes, I made a master board by painting the stripes design and then cut them apart to 3.5 x 2.5 inches.  The quotes and words were then stamped directly onto the cards. I could see this technique and the quotes being used to create sweet sentiment cards, quick, easy, simple and effective, what more could you want?.

NEW PAINTS !!!

And what abut the new paints I hear you say...well I've added 4 to my collection; 2 rich decadent purples and of course who doesn't love bright blues so I just knew I had to include a couple of new shades for you. The samples below were made with the new colours and I'm sure that you will agree they are going to be a stunning addition to my existing colours and I cant wait to see what you do with them...

Thank you so much for popping in today, I do hope that you love the new releases as much as I do and would love to see what you do with them. You can find me on social media at the links below and please tag me in anything that you would like me to see... I love to see your creations...

And don't forget to check back tomorrow where the lovely Clare will be showing you more fabulous ideas with these products.
