2020 #14 All Made Up with Tracy Scott stamps {by Lucy Edmondson}

 2020 Topic 14: Fused

We're always looking out for new ways to use our stamps, and pencil colouring on fabric is such a great idea. The softness of the blending and colours is really lovely and yet, the vibrancy of colour Lucy has attained makes it a real standout project.
~ Keren

Hi everyone, it's Lucy from Lucy's True Colours with you today, and I'd like to share with you a make up bag I have made using a fusion of the vibrancy of Inktense pencils with the softness of a wash of Fresco Finish chalk paints, finished off with a matching Brilliance ink shrink plastic charm.

I like to make make-up bags as they make great postable presents which can also be used to store paint brushes and small crafty items. I adore Tracy Scott's stamps and I feel they suit a very vibrant medium, and I also of course wanted something that would work well on fabric, so I thought I would try Inktense for the first time, as they are permanent when heat set. Here's a close up of the dangly shrink plastic charm.

I learnt a lot whilst making this project as I had used Inktense before and had struggled a bit with them, and had never used them on fabric. I'm not sure actually why I made life so difficult for myself! I found the secret was to use the Outliner which was part of my main set. Over the years I have added supplementary colours, as I am colour obsessed, which were in odd tins. I also found I had to try out the colours on a spare piece of card, as the end of the pencil isn't a very good indicator.

I started off by stamping Tracy's butterfly from ETS39 in Versafine Clair Nocturne onto the make up bag. I think a lot of us are in love with this stamp! I also stamped the flower from ETS17, masked it, and stamped the end of the leaf sprig from the butterfly around the edge of it. I heat set the Clair as it's a very wet ink but it gave a good image even on fabric. Both a good ink and a good stamp! I then went around everything with the Inktense Outliner with a sharpened point.
For the background, I used a wash of Fresco Finish Acrylic Paints in Limelight, Banana, South Pacific, Zesty Zing, Cherry Red, and Coral. The Outliner prevented these seeping into the design.

 I then used a dark grey inktense pencil to add my shading.

I then coloured the butterfly and flower in using a selection of brightly coloured Inktense pencils and a water brush, heatsetting with my heat tool at intervals as I went along. To add the white centres, I used the end of a paintbrush dipped in Snowflake to create dots. I also dry brushed a little Snowflake to create some white highlights.

I used Fresco Finish Snowflake through a stencil (Kim Dellow PS034) around the edge of the bag to frame it and to break up the background colours. I also used the Snowflake around the edge of the design as a highlight.

Now for the charm, which will hang from the zip. I used white shrink plastic and I wanted a medium that would adhere to the shrink, so I used Brilliance inks. For the leaves, I applied the ink with cut n dry foam in Pearlescent Ivy and Pearlescent Thyme straight onto the plastic and then stamped using Brilliance Graphite Black (or you could use Jet Black StazOn), punched a hole, then cut them out and shrunk them.

For the flower, I wanted the colour in specific places, so I stamped it first, then painted using a fine brush using the reinkers in Pearlescent Poppy and Pearlescent Orange, to perfectly match the flower on the bag. I then attached them to a mobile phone clip using jump rings.

Here's a close up of the final bag charm.

On reflecting on the finished project, I am torn between being thrilled with how it turned out, and frustrated with feeling, well it just looks like I stamped something and coloured it in! I seemed to spend ages highlighting, shading, and back again. I would have made life much easier for myself if I had used my usual Prismacolour pencils, but I was determined I wanted something really intense for Tracy's stamps, and I found the Inktense pencils quite hard to control, particularly when using the dark grey. I think I learned more about the technique by giving it a go and would definitely use Inktense on fabric again, as I think I got my wish of a truly vibrant project!

2019 #18 Shaving Foam: Some Experimenting with ETS {by Lucy Edmondson}

2019 Topic 18: Shaving Foam

As we bring our shaving foam experiments to a close, Lucy works with dark and bright reinkers in shaving foam to create this canvas using Tracy's stamps and stencils ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Lucy from Lucy's True Colours with you today, and I'd like to share with you a canvas board made with Tracy Scott's stamps and stencisl and some techniques with shaving foam.

When I first started papercrafting back in 2003, but before I started stamping, I dabbled with shaving foam as many of us did, but was not very happy with the effects. I had some marbling inks which were only available in primary colours and so I found the end results not very subtle. Now we have such a huge range of options available to us that we can float and marble to give so many different looks. in 2014 (and I couldn't believe it was so long ago!) I did some experiments here on the blog with Fresco Finish Paints and really enjoyed using shaving foam again.

So today I knew I wanted to do something different and to do some further experimenting, and had immediately decided I wanted to use Distress Oxide reinkers. I wanted to see if I could dip and swipe with a number of different materials using the foam and Oxide combo. I had mixed results. I knew that because Oxides are chalky they show up on black so I thought I would introduce black backgrounds into my project but I don't feel the nuances of the different colours show up as clearly as they do on white. I quite like the rather dreamy quality it gives though. I felt other aspects of the experiments were more successful.

I started off in the traditional way with my shaving foam and drops of Distress Oxide reinkers in Twisted Citron, Seedless Preserves
, Dusty Concorde, Picked Raspberry, Broken China, Abandoned Coral, and Shaded Lilac. I like to use a baking tin covered in foil to make clean up easy. You can then lift it out of the way to clear your work surface so you have space to do your scraping.

I made a feathered pattern with a wooden skewer, making sure to break up any dots of colour.

For my substrate, I painted a piece of canvas board with Fresco Finish Little Black Dress.

I then dipped it in the shaving foam mixture and scraped across once with my ruler. If you're not happy with it, you can repaint your canvas with Little Black Dress.

I did a piece of black cardstock at the same time, to make a matching greetings card. Well, really it was just part of the experiment! The markings seem much more distinct. I don't know why.

I then gold embossed the stem from the large flower from Tracy Scott Eclectica ETS29 onto the canvas.

I dipped pieces of pink tissue paper into the shaving foam mixture. The colours are glorious! You need to take a little care when pulling the ruler across as the shaving foam is a little soggy and the tissue paper is delicate but it's not too difficult to do so.

I then used my pieces of tissue paper to gold emboss the small and large flowers from Tracy Scott Eclectica ETS17 concentrating on the areas where there is most colour, and cut them out and layered them together.

I scooped up some of the surface shaving foam with a credit card (yes, it's buried under there!) and scraped it through Tracy Scott's stencil PS111 onto pink tissue paper and once the flower circles were dry I cut them out.

I just love this versatile stencil. I cut up pieces of these circles and applied them around the edges of the canvas in a random fashion using gel medium. I love the translucent, veiny look.

I did the same thing onto a piece of canvas sheet from a pad, cut around it, and used my scissors to distress the edges so there were lots of cotton strands. This was one of the bits of the experiment I liked! I used this as a base for my layered tissue paper flowers and positioned it above the gold stem.

I used some of the remaining inky foam on the credit card to scrape across some canvas paper and once it was dry, I gold embossed the word 'Bloom' from Tracy Scott Eclectica ETS29 and roughed up the edges. I positioned this at the base of the flower stem.

To finish off my canvas I added some white text from Tracy Scott Eclectica ETS28 using Fresco Finish Snowflake, some white paint splatters, and some white lace at the bottom which I pleated.

I took a silver bulldog clip and painted it with Fresco Finish Little Black Dress which adhered beautifully to the metal. Whilst the paint was a little wet, I added some random flecks of gold embossing powder for some rough texture.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing my creative process, what worked and what maybe didn't work so well, and that it has given you some new possibilities to try. I made such a big fat mess along the way I wasn't sure I would manage to get a successful project made at all! You could say it was a close shave!

2018 #18 Stamping Platforms: Hawaiian Girl with ETS {by Lucy Edmondson}

 2018 Topic 18: Stamp Platform Techniques

One of the magnificent things about using a stamp platform is that you can keep on stamping in the exact same position until you are happy with the image. This is particularly useful onto fabric where ink can be unpredictable.~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Lucy from Lucy's True Colours here with you today with a fabric project to showcase the benefits of the Tim Holtz stamping platform and the gorgeous Tracy Scott stamps.

I've always loved working with fabric because it's so tactile, but I had become frustrated with the quality of stamping that could be achieved. Then at Ally Pally in April, my friend bought me the Tim Holtz stamping platform for my birthday. It has revolutionized my stamping!

There are so many things you can do with a platform. I have dug out some of the pesky stamps I had had trouble getting a decent image from in the past, (not PaperArtsy ones I might add) and have revisited some difficult techniques and surfaces. It's great when you want a really dark image, or when you want your image to be darker in some areas than in others. It's also great for multi-coloured images. Fabric can be tricky, especially if it has a heavy weave, but you can re-stamp the image several times until it is dark enough and any patchiness is fully covered.  Some ink pads perform better than others and for this project I used Archival, Versafine, and a new one to me, Nuvo. The Nuvo arrived in the post whilst I was in the middle of working on this and I was very impressed with its performance.

I had so much fun working with Tracy's stamps! I have had several sets for a while, but I specifically wanted what I have dubbed 'Hawaiian Girl' for this project, and she is new to me. I grew very attached to her and she developed a personality and a story as I worked with her, and she has been dressed for a beach party - in Hawaii of course!

I decided on a canvas make up bag as my project as I am currently making items to give as Christmas presents.

The canvas has quite a heavy weave but still came out well after three presses in the stamping platform, using Versafine Onyx Black for the girl from Eclectica ETS17.

Instead of the magnets, with an awkward bulky item like this, i found using something like masking tape to hold it in place worked well. Because of the corners/gussets of the bags, I used the tape to press these down so they didn't prevent the stamp itself making contact with all areas of the fabric. I was really amazed with the quality of the impression. I gave the ink a quick blast with the heat gun which you need to do with Versafine as it's quite oily and helps with permanence onto fabric.

I decided I wanted to use both Fresco Finish paints and coloured pencils for my bag, partly as I was experimenting, and partly because I wanted a mixed media project. The pencils I used were Prismacolour and they are absolutely wonderful on fabric. They were recommended to the group when I was lucky enough to attend a Lin Brown class many years ago. The blending with them is glorious; they blend on top of themselves. Here I have started off the face with Fresco Finish in Blush.

Here I have gone on to add some shading and highlighting to the face and body with the pencils. It's quite subtle, apart from the doll cheeks. I used Fresco Finish in Chocolate Pudding for the hair and later added some highlights with the pencils. I've taped the bag back down to stamp the butterfly from Eclectica ETS20
 and used the grid on the Stamping Platform to line the words up beneath it.

Here, the butterfly and the headpiece are coloured with pencils, but the dress has been painted with Fresco Finish in both Peach Nectar and Tango as I wanted it to look like folds of shot silk, catching the light with an iridescent glow. I used a brush to add a little watered down Fresco Finish Metallic Glaze to emphasize this. I added a little touch to the white at the centre of her pupil, and on her lip, and I mixed some in with Wisteria Fresco Finish for her eyeshadow. By this time we were chatting away and she was telling me what colours she wanted for her eyes!

For the orange flower, I painted a piece of calico [I could have used canvas sheet] with a selection of Fresco Finish paints: Peach Nectar, Tango, Tangerine Twist, Mustard Pickle, and Pansy, and stamped the flower from Eclectica ETS17 again using the stamping platform to get a good, dark image. For the mauve flower I stamped the flower from Eclectica ETS17 and coloured it with the pencil, adding white dots with a paint pen. I stitched beads into the centre and stitched the layers together.

The butterfly is from Eclectica ETS20 and has been coloured with pencils and finished with Fresco Finish Metallic Glaze. I used the long beads from the bead set and two of the half moon shaped ones threaded onto wire to make the body and antenna of the butterfly to add to the mixed media look I was after.

To finish off, I added some pale pink velvet ric-rac below the zip. In this close up you can see the embellishments and the beading better. I like to have a bit of beading and stitching if I am using fabric.

I enjoyed making this project SO much! I find Tracy's stamps such a joy to work with; they are so relaxing and enable you to make beautiful things with ease. One thing I might do differently next time is I got carried away with the aesthetics and forgot practicality with the 3d embellishments which could catch and get tatty in a handbag. Next time it would be fun to make the whole headdress into a layered brooch on a brooch-back which could be removed by the recipient and form an extra gift. Also the zip didn't have a hole at the end, and it would have been fun to stamp my Hawaiian girl onto shrink plastic and add a zip dangly with beads.

I love the stamping platform as it makes you feel confident that your project isn't going to go wrong half way through because an image hasn't stamped out clearly. As I love mixed media, this frees me up to use a range of more challenging substrates which are often too costly to throw away when everything goes wrong. It has opened up a whole world of possibilities to explore!
