2021 Topic 9: Baubles & Bling with TS {by Tracy Scott}

  2021 Topic 9: Baubles & Bling

It's time for another designer to share ideas with their own stamps, this time Tracy is here with a Christmas panel full of bling, shine. Her clever background gives an impression that strings of Christmas lights are turned on and shining bright!
~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Tracy here with you today, and I'm here to share with you my project for the current 'Baubles & Bling' topic......

For quite some time I have wanted to try my hand at creating a painted bokeh effect and the current topic gave me the perfect opportunity, blurred tree lights sparkling behind pretty baubles.

It turned out to be much easier than I expected and whilst my first attempt may not be perfect, I am thrilled with the effect and will definitely be trying this again in the future.

1. I wanted to create a dark background for this one so that the bokeh effect would be more prominent so I decided on Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Chocolate Pudding) and Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Mahogany) for my base colours, using an old brush to create a more textured look,  I decided to keep it darker on one side and lighter as it moved across the surface.

2. I wanted to start building the layers for my foliage so to create depth, I first started with my darkest colour which was Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Little Black Dress) and my leaves stencil PaperArtsy (PS226).

3. Next up I used the fern style leaf from my new stencil PaperArtsy, PS268 (stockists can be found at the bottom of this blog post here) and layered up, first stencilling with Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Chocolate Pudding) & Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Mahogany), as these are the same colours that were in the base layer. The stencilling is very subtle, but really helps to build depth. Finally, the top layer was stencilled with Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Toffee) to add structure.

4. Time to start creating the bokeh effect. I began with my darkest colour first Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Chocolate Pudding), painting in various sized circles using a flat brush (of course if you have a circles stencil you could stencil these on instead).  You then repeat the process with the next colour, in this case Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Mahogany) ensuring that the circles are different sizes and overlapping in places. Continue to repeat until you have used all of the colours working from darkest to lightest... Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Toffee, Caramel, Gold Rush, Vintage Lace)

5. To add even more depth and sparkle, I next used my WOW embossing pen and WOW embossing powders, drawing over the circles with the pen and then heat embossing the powder.  I embossed with WOW (Gold Rich, Mojito and White).  I love the depth and detail using the metallic and glitter embossing powders add.

6. Next up it was time to create the baubles for my tree, I decided to use a couple of the stamps from my new stamp set Tracy Scott Set 62 (TS062), (you'll find a link to stockists at the bottom of this blog post here), even though they were certainly not designed to be baubles it turns out that they work perfectly. I used two of the shape stamps and then used part of the key to create the small bauble.  I painted my PaperArtsy Smoothy Card with Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Cerulean) and Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Deep Sea) before stamping directly over the top with Versafine (Onyx Black) ink.

7. Now it's time for finishing touches.... I added my baubles to my page using 3D foam to add a little dimension and once attached I went ahead and added detailing using gold, white and black pen work, drawing the hangers directly onto my page. All that was left to do was to ink up my edges with Ranger Inks (Potting Soil, Jet Black) and add some self adhesive gems to both the tree and baubles and of course splatter. For this I used Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Cerulean) and Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Gold) It certainly pulls it all together.

Here's a few close up photos so you can see the detail ...

Thank you for stopping by. I love how this page turned out. Although my bokeh wasn't perfect (it was my first time after all!!) it still conveys the feel that I was after for this piece. And whilst the background colours would not normally be my first choices they really do work perfectly for this project. I hope you enjoyed my step by step today and really can't wait to see what you create. I will definitely be creating more with this technique.

Tracy Scott Set 060 (TS060)

An Egyptian theme has been on my list for some time now, I love all things Egypt, the country itself is amazing, the culture, the food and of course all the fabulous history and imagery.
I love to combine my hand drawn images with my stamps and stencils to really create unique pieces of art and knew that was just what was called for with this project...

I don't very often (well let's face it..never!!)  create with brown tones but I just knew for the initial project idea I had in mind for this stamp set it was the only colour way to go. The different elements included in this stamp set were perfect for creating interest in the background so that was a real added bonus.

My Egyptian cat is probably one of my favourite projects ever. Using the hand drawn design and accenting with the stamped elements from this set really does enhance the finished project adding those all important details.

Tracy Scott Set 061 (TS061)

Well that can I say about this set?... I just love to include flowers in my artwork, whether they appear in my journal, on a card or scrapbook page, or ever on a home decor piece, you will always find them somewhere.
My grandad used to love fuschia's and was constantly growing them, all different varieties and all different colours so I knew they needed to be included in my collections.

Apart from the obvious uses for these stamps as focal points for your projects, above I have used them with embossing powder over a black base to create an interesting background feature for my finished card pictured below.

In the second sample below, I have combined coloured images with black and white accents to accentuate and add to the details of the card.

Tracy Scott Set 062 (TS062)

So this stamp set was a bit of a curve ball!.....
If you have followed me for any amount of time you will know that I like to throw something a little unexpected into the mix and I like my products to have multiple uses, and this one is certainly no exception....

My initial idea for these stamps was to create multi changeable wings, the idea that you would have lots of possibilities for various winged butterflies, dragonflies etc using either the pen or key as the central body.
However I realised quite quickly that these would have a lot more uses than I initially thought!.. the pen has been used in the background above too for create subtle detail and below I have used every part of the set to create a multi coloured mandala.

And of course as well as winged creatures and the most spectacular mandalas, just think how many combinations of large flowers you could create (I stamped some out initially to get a feel for how large they would be and they were between 6 & 8 inches in diameter!... stunning for a larger project).

New Stencils
Large Size: 6.25" x 9.5" (16 x 24cm) Price: RRP €6.28 +VAT

PaperArtsy Stencil 267 (PS267)

Mmmmm!!!..... that's what I can hear you thinking!!!
What is this one about I hear you asking?......
Well sit back and let me explain.....
This one is not so much a stencil (although it would work perfectly well to create detail for fabulous gel prints etc!),
No...this one has been designed to be more of a template so that you can add more hand drawn elements to your journal pages, cards and projects.
Still confused?.... you can use the double ended shapes in this stencil to create a multitude of flowers (whether they be flat or dimensional) in a wealth of different sizes, see my sample below...

Pretty impressive isn't it, and you can see already that the possibilities really are going to be endless with this one!....
but what else can you do with this one?....You can create the most fabulous and amazing mandalas, this is just one of mine in the picture below....

That's just two samples but think about all the variations on these two themes along with creating 3D elements, borders etc.
I think this is one of my favourites and can see me using this one a lot in the future.

PaperArtsy Stencil 268 (PS268)

Who doesn't love a leaf stencil?.... I know I do. Tropical leaves have been on my list of things to do forever and with all the different flower/butterfly/bird & insect stamps that I now have in my collection I knew now was the right time.
These are going to coordinate perfectly with so many of my other releases but below I have just used it as a base background for my hand drawn focal image...

All the elements of this stencil build up so perfectly to create a total jungle tropical theme to my background on this journal page, perfect to add my hand drawn toucan.
However I know they will work equally as well built up on a card/journal/scrapbook page with a bird/bee/butterfly focal stamp.
Even on their own to create a wonderful background would be just perfect.... I know you will use this one over and over again.

PaperArtsy Stencil 269 (PS269)

I adore gothic art and architectural elements and although I've touched on this theme in my stamp set TS003 I knew I wanted to do some more and so the idea for this stencil was born.
I knew that I wanted to do something to really highlight the idea behind the design (stained glass windows) so my first sample using it had to this journal page below...

This is exactly the picture I had in my head when this stencil was designed and I just knew I had to put it out there as such,  using it as a template but I know this stencil is going to be a valuable addition to my backgrounds stencil collection too..... I love that it is multi purpose and can be used both as a focal and it can also be slipped into my backgrounds to add the most beautiful design element.
