2020 #15 Contrasting Whites with Hot Picks {by Alison Bomber}

2020 Topic 15: Shades Of White

This topic has really opened my eyes to the possibilities of a colour that I rarely use much of, although enjoy it's 'space' on a project. Alison has got so many techniques plus a little experiment that make the most of wonderful whites. Of course she's added in some of her lovely words that she's known so well for on these gorgeous tags.
~ Keren.

Hi everyone, it's Alison here from Words and Pictures with you today, and I've got some really subtle contrasts to share with you today.

I'm a big fan of white, whether it's paints or embossing powders.  You can add light and freshness with a touch of white, and it's a rare project for me that doesn't end with a bit of white spatter (this is one of those times... though there is spatter!).  So for this I decided to play my two favourite white embossing powders off against each other to see if I could decide once and for all which I like better!

Of course, in the end, it's not about favourites, (each of them has their place) but I'm really quite surprised at how off-white the Vanilla White powder is when you put it against a true white like Snowflake.  That doesn't usually happen, because when I'm using the warm white it's amongst darker colours so it looks much whiter!

Snowflake is, without a doubt, my most-used paint.  I go through bottles of the stuff!  So there was no doubt which of the whiter whites would be my pick from the PaperArtsy whites. I decided to play with a much newer addition to the range, one of Seth Apter's colours, Heavy Cream, as my "contrast" colour.

And here are the embossing powders, ready to provide glossy light-catching dimension; one of the main reasons I love using them.

I started with some crackle for the backgrounds.  I did have Stone as my first layer on both tags as I wanted a subtle shade underneath; too dark and it would distract from the later stamping.  But if you look closely you'll notice that in the end I re-did the cream tag to give it a white underlayer beneath the cracks.I needed that reverse of light/dark (well, light/lighter!) to balance the tags.

The stamps I'd decided to use are from Hot Picks 1109 - one of the first PaperArtsy sets I owned.  This flower stem is still a favourite.

Here's the powder in place before heating (still with the Stone underlayer on both tags).

Then it's the magic of the heating (and the additional magic of having redone the creamy tag so that it has white cracks behind, thanks to a new Snowflake underlayer).

I kept the finishing touches very simple; a couple of kraft tags, embossed with the matching powders and then white washed (both with watery Snowflake).

The words are fragments from one of the quotes on my stamp set EAB19 Life & Living.  I used masking tape to cover up the words I didn't want when I was inking the stamp, and then removed the tape before stamping.

The tiny banners are nestled in some frayed (white!) cheesecloth at the foot of the tags.

They've had a little sweep of Treasure Gold in White Fire around the edges, and the metal fastener has had some too.  Well, White Fire is another shade of white, surely?!

At the top of the tag, two Idea-ology number brads have had the same brush with White Fire Treasure Gold; I love the subtle glamour of it.

And that spatter?  Well, using the Treasure Gold reminded me that PaperArtsy had brought out a Fresco paint called White Fire a while back... so what better to spatter the tags with at the end.

Yes, both tags got the same colour spatter; there's only so far you can go with reversing colours!

Overall, I'm quite pleased with how much contrast there is between my shades of white and I think those little flicks of metallic paint bring it to life very nicely.

There's a delicious subtlety about these tags, I think.  I'll be honest, they don't work if you look at them from a distance; they just turn into a white blur.  But there's something magical about the close-up effect of those gleaming flowers, especially when they catch the light.  I also really like the crackle with white as the background layer.  I've never done it that way round before - I generally have a dark underlayer and (as often as not) white over the top, so that was a nice discovery.

I hope you like the effect and I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of it.  Thanks so much for stopping by today, and happy crafting all!  (Oh, and come and find me on Instagram if you're there... I'm still finding my way around, but having fun!)

2017 #17 White: White on White Mobile with ESA {by Alison Bomber}

2017 Topic 17: Shades of White

From all things rust to all things white. Quite a contrast in these Topics, but we do love a challenge, and working with shades of white can be exactly that, but once you start to look at texture, shiny vs matte or sparkle, you have the makings of a lot of gorgeous posts! Plus, I do think this fits nicely into an elegant Christmas theme too! Let's see what Alison brings ot this topic! Always a crowd-pleaser, I'm sure you will love this idea!

Hello all, Alison here from Words and Pictures with some white on white action for you... and I do mean action.  I have a mobile for you today - the very name meaning it's always in movement... yes, I set myself another photographic challenge!

I don't really know why, but the very moment I put Shades of White together in my brain with the idea of using Seth's stamps, the mobile jumped into my head.  I could suddenly see it... Seth's Wood Chips, some glossy white embossing over a softer chalky background, catching the light as it moved.  It's really unusual for me to have such a clear picture of where I'm going.  I'll leave you to decide whether I got there.

I experimented with a couple of different hanging methods - if I'd gone with string as the mechanism, then it would really have been hard to capture as they would all have been twirling crazily.  The wire I eventually chose means things are a little stiller, so you can get a half decent shot!

I thought I'd use the circles and stars to give the mobile a wintry look to go with the whites - snowballs/stars/snowflakes as the idea.

Seth's wood chips come in a sheet as above, ready to pop out the shapes, and he also cleverly planned them to have some matching stamps ESA03 and ESA04, which as you can see, fit the shapes. The frames are a nice bonus and offer all kinds of options as far as layering and framing go too.

I used the Fresco Chalk Paint in Chalk on the Wood Chips - it's a lovely warm white.  I did a couple of coats, sanding in between so that I'd have a nice smooth surface.

Seth's sets ESA03 and ESA04 not only work with the Wood Chip shapes (or vice versa, probably!) but also with his StencilGirl 'insiders' and 'outsiders' stencils, and he has a wide range of Spellbinders dies that mimic the star and circle theme too.

For the embossing, I used Wow Bright White powder over Versamark ink.  On one side I've used the fabulous texty stamps from ESA04...

... and on the reverse sides I've used the graphic designs from ESA03 (except on the outline Wood Chips - they've got text on both sides).

The frame is made from the internal ring of an embroidery hoop and some coffee stirrers, all painted in Chalk, and glued together.

And for my hanging mechanism I went for the recycling option... wiggly wire from a used paper pad - and of course it's another shade of white.

I love the sculptural effect of the slightly straightened spirals in the air, and of course it's incredibly easy to attach the elements - just bend and twist and you're done.

It wasn't the sunniest of mornings for the photographs, but I'm really pleased with how the embossing shows up, and it's even better when the light is brighter.

So for once I knew where I was going and there were relatively few obstructions along the way (just as well, as I was working on a very tight time restriction!).  I did try out the effect of inking the edges with some Vintage Photo Distress Ink on one of the stars, just to see if I wanted to go that way, but I washed it away again.  (You can see the temporarily-inked star in the photo with the still-curly book wire - see what you think.)  I like the clean, fresh look of the pure white on white.  I hope my shades of white give you some ideas to play with over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Isn't the embossing on the chalk paint perfect! And I could not work out what your squiggly wire was until you said! A great idea Alison and as Frescos are equally happy outdoors as indoors, you could leave that outside too! ~ Leandra
