2021 Topic 6 Mandala Mix with Tracy Scott Stamps {by Lynn Good}

  2021 Topic 6: Mandala Mix

I don't think it's possible to tire of watching people create with the Blackout Technique. Seeing Lynn's fabulous mandala emerge step by step is like watching real blooms emerge from a bud. Grab those white pens and have a go at trying this technique.
~ Keren.

Hi everyone, it's Lynn Good (Memories on the page) with you today, and I'd like to share with you an art journal page that I have created for the topic "Mandala Mix".

I was immediately drawn to a technique that I love; colour, stamping and then blacking out the background.  This was taught by Tracy Scott when she came to Australia (Pre Covid times!!).  At the time, the class I did was the same technique but we blocked out the unwanted areas in white.  Later I used black and found that the contrast is something that definitely makes my heart skip a beat.

I love the process of putting down the colour and having that "ugly" stage and then drawing it all together with paint pens - I have stage by stage photos below;

I started with Fresco Chalk paints and using my finger added lots of little areas on the journal page

I then stamped my images directly onto the page.  I used Stamp TS055

I did not worry that my stamping was not 100% accurate. Line work would fix it and after the paint pens you won't notice.
The next step was to black out the areas around the stamping - for this I used Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics in Little Black Dress.

Once the black paint was dry I used a white paint pen to highlight the petals and add dots around the flowers.
I also used colour pencils to highlight the flowers and black paint pen to highlight the black areas.   This is the process that I find so enjoyable.  It is relaxing, it brings the page together by highlighting the flowers.

The final stage is to add all the circles in the black areas. This was done with moonlight gel pens and again very therapeutic.

I find this type of journalling fantastic - it gives me a great sense of completion and the pop of colours make me smile.   I encourage you to have a go and I hope it makes you smile like it has me.

I look forward to seeing what you have created.

Lynn.

2021 Topic 6 Mandala Mix with EGL {by Etsuko Noguchi}

  2021 Topic 6: Mandala Mix

There is something sumptuous about a project using fabric, and Etsuko has made such a wonderful mandala using stitching, embroidery and more.  You'll love all the incredible details that come together in this creative piece of art.
~ Keren,

Hi everyone, it's Etsuko (My favorite thingswith you today, and I'd like to share with you Mandala Mix using fabulous Gwen Lafleur stamps collection.

I made the Mandala that was a mix of embroidery and paper painting. The technique of incorporating embroidery into paper crafting is one that Gwen Lafleur has introduced many times on her blog and in her workshops, and I was so inspired that I created the project here using the technique. (Her embroidery tutorial video is here).

The first step was to stamp and embroider the focal point, EGL09 tribal stamp, and the surrounding EGL13, EGL09 flower stamps on these fabrics.

The tribal image was partially painted with Fresco Acrylic Paints Sorbet and Lemon Meringue using medium and embroidered on blue cotton fabric using multi coloured embroidery thread and beads.

This is the tribal background, where I stamped EGL09 and EGL13 these flowers on the linen and stenciled Gwen's some stencil around it with Fresco Finish Gold.

Using only embroidery was a little insufficient, so I made embellishments. First I painted Fresco Finish Gold on Smoothy A4 white card, stamped EGL04 small fish by VersaFine Clear Acorn, with clear embossing powder. Then I cut one row at a time and sewed on with gold thread.

Blue alcohol inks on the acetate, stamped EGL14 by Fresco Finish Gold and cut out the leaves to make sequins.

Then I created two different trim line bases for the ellipse border, the background and for EGL07 the lotus flowers for the four corners.
For the red one, I painted Fresco Finish London Bus all over on the Smoothy A4 white card and stamped EGL06 using Fresco Finish Tangerine Twist and Byzantium respectively. On the other hand, for the blue one, I painted Fresco Finish Southern Skies, Turquoise and Smurf then after it dried, I added a thin layer of Pumpkin Soup with water.

I stenciled Arabesque by VersaFine Clear Nocturne but the dark colour seemed a little creepy so I embossed with gold.

Finally I used black cardstock for the background and embossed the EGL10 butterflies in baked Texture Altered Page. I distressed the trim and the red frame with Sepia Archival.
It's a lot of fun to assemble with different materials. However, it is always my challenge to create a sense of unity.
Thank you so much for visiting.

2021 Topic 6 Mandala Mix with EEV/TS/ESC and more! {by Nikki Acton}

 2021 Topic 6: Mandala Mix

We all love a mash up and check out this amazing colour scheme by Nikki Acton!! What an absolute winner!
~ Leandra

Hi everyone, Nikki here from Addicted to Art. For my mandala project I have gone for a mandala mash up, featuring a number of stamps and stencils.

I decided to create my own mandala with a nature theme. This project is 12x12 inches so took a bit of time and some careful measuring, but was great fun!

I usually avoid overly symmetrical projects! However this one is certainly an exception.

I drew out my planned layout on cartridge paper with measurements. I later chopped this up a little to form masks when painting and stencilling on the main project. I did paint a lot without a mask as I knew some pen work would hide any 'painting outside the lines'.

My starting colours are Electric Violet, Blueberry and Azure which is stencilled using PS234.

At this stage you can see I have competed most of the background with paint and either stencilling, stamping or pen work in each area. Additional colours used here are: Vanilla, Rose and Slimed. I used stencils PS108 and PS169.

Now for some fussy cutting! I created some backgrounds using the paints already used with the addition of Zucchini for the greens and Gold.

The main stamps include: the ladybird - Tracy Scott TS027, the leaves - Ellen Vargo EEV09 and the butterflies - Scrapcosy - ESC23.

I took my time getting everything positioned accurately. You can see how the black lines around each area add some emphasis and can mask any inaccurate paint marks!

For my dots and circles I used a combination of Fresco paint on the end of a ball tool and Posca pens.

This lady bird stamp is fabulous! I added touches of gold around his body.

This really was great fun. My crafting tends to be done mostly in the evenings and often for just 30 minutes at a time. I love it when I have a project on the go that I can come back to and just do bits at a time.
