2021 Topic 7: Stamp Mash Up JOFY, EEG, ESN, I&D minis {by Keren Baker}

2021 Topic 7: Stamp Mash Up

Hi everyone, it's Keren Baker with you today, and I'm here to share with you an exploration into going vintage (or not) via creating an art doll.

I'd created a bag recently with some children's dress forms on and quite fancied recreating something similar in a papercraft style using the 4 different designers in the Mash-Up topic. The whole idea began with the shells! When I was looking through Sara Naumann's collections I saw the seashells, thought 'wings' and then set about trying to find all the other elements that would be roughly the correct scale.

I had it in my head that this might be the time for a little foray into a more vintage style. I've always drooled over those people who seem to do it so effortlessly (like Jennie Atkinson). So I'd made a sketch and thought 'what would Jennie do?' and decided she probably wouldn't be using bright white mercerised cotton to stamp onto. So I tea dyed it (another first).

Truth be told, two things scare me (artistically). One is the colour cream, beige, nougat etc. and the other is 'too much'. To soothe the whole 'this isn't white' thing I thought I'd attempt my second new thing; smocking. I love texture and wanted to stamp images on the dress but thought a little sewing might get me back to my happy place. As this isn't about sewing- here's one picture showing the whole smocking process.

After creating some arms from striped fabric, I got to the wings. I stamped the beautiful shells from ESN48.

After stamping the shells, I loved the simplicity of it, but really wanted to add more layers.

I added some stencilling and then really disliked it, so stamped the shells in black and thought I'd add a Duralar Matt layer over that, that had some Grunge Paste stencilled over and perhaps..(experiment no.3) adding some Infusions onto the non-porous surface. (You can see my dotty disasters in this next photo).

I used Royal Blood & Sleight Blue Infusions, sprayed them over the stencilled Grunge Paste using PS247. I love the way that the Infusions just seep around the Grunge Paste.

Stockists for this product can be found at the base of this post

Assembly was altogether more tricky than I realised. I had stamped the bottom of the dress (which I realised I should have done before but I didn't know what length the smocking was going to be; I'd thought the smocking would just be on the bodice but it ended up being a natural dress shape) so I stretched the fabric and just went for it using the Mini MN48 which I also cut in half so I didn't ink past the measuring part.

I adore the randomness of the unravelling fabric threads.

My challenge was how to present the art doll. This is where I sadly left Jennie behind. I just wanted to add colour to some mountboard, so grabbed some Mid Century colours (that's vintage, right?!).

Using my next designer Jo Firth-Young, I chose one of her new sets JOFY102.

This product is available from stockists listed at the base of this post

With some blending and dry brushing, I added the colours and stamped using Stazon Pigment White which is a brilliant newer Stazon white and much less messy than the previous White. By the time I'd finished it, I didn't want to cover it up!

Adding some Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic Haystack to the face of the doll helped make the project more unified. I used the Mini MN10 and overstamped with the tile image from EEG26- bringing in Emma Godfrey's stamps into the project. I also added the curved image from the Mini to act as a necklace and help disguise the raw edges of the smocking.

Deciding on the middle of the dress- I wanted to add her heart. She doesn't wear her heart on her sleeve, but in a more literal place. This doll is all heart! I've used the Mini 60 (MN60) stamped in white over some Baltic Blue and surrounded by a cut out frame from the ESN48 set.

You can also see the flowers from the JOFY102 set, and those flowers were added for a headdress and also tucked under the skirt.
This was a real up and down project. I got to this point (shown below) in the project and wanted to stop and maybe just add frilled cap sleeves and no wings, but then it wouldn't have been a mash-up project.

However, I still love the final result plus I got to use the shells we'd had some food in as a bonus for staging the photos! If you look closely, you can see the sentiment 'life is good' at the bottom of the mount using another Emma Godfrey set EEG02.

Have you made any art dolls? It's a great way of letting your hair down creatively and anything goes really. Next time I'd like to try dolls with moveable limbs and a way for them to pose. I didn't quite manage vintage, but it's more muted than I'd usually do and I have tried to embrace off-white! Experimentation doesn't always bring perfect results but it allows you decide differently next time and you never know when you'll discover something incredibly exciting.

See you soon,

Keren x

2021 Topic 7: Stamp Mash UP JOFY, EEG, ESN, I&D minis {by Claire Snowdon}

 2021 Topic 7: Stamp Mash Up

Love how Claire has pulled this journal spread together, the kraft paper makes a rustic, distressed border at the edges, framing her gorgeous arty layers beautifully.
~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Claire Snowdon with you today, and I'm here to share a spread I created in my kraft paper art journal for the mash up topic.  I used JOFY, Emma Godfrey (EEG) and Sara Naumann (ESN) stamps together with a little JOFY mini stamp too.

I love creating art journal pages - but sometimes when I just don't know how to start I find a plain white page is a little daunting!  But over the years I have come to realise that I don't have the same issue when using kraft pages......I'm pretty sure I can't be the only one - kraft paper seems to allow more freedom and expression!

I started fast and furious with this one - PaperArtsy Fresco Chalk Acrylics (Bubblegum, Butternut and Zucchini) were scraped on with a palette knife.  I tried not to overthink it but I did want to keep the Zucchini towards the bottom to act as a semblance of grass.  I added Cloud 9 over the top - I used a variety of techniques; the palette knife, my fingers and also a baby wipe to soften it slightly.

I added some detail to my background using the flower stamp from Emma Godfrey set 22 (EEG22) stamped with Fresco Chalk Acrylics in Bubblegum and Butternut.  I also added some stamping using the quote stamp from Sara Naumann set 33 (ESN33) - I used Versafine Smokey Grey and Ranger Archival Jet Black inks to create depth and shadows.

I started to build up my composition - using the flower stalk on the left hand page from Jo Firth-Young set 14 (JOFY14) and the stem from Jo Firth-Young set 54 (JOFY54) on the right - which is to become the main focal point of the page.  I stamped flowers all along the bottom of the page to create a 'meadow' feeling using the Jo Firth-Young mini 33 (JM33).  You can see I had trouble stamping near the ring binding of my journal - I was using an acrylic block, so in the future I need to try to remember to take the stamp of the block to make it a little easier.

I stamped the large flower head from Emma Godfrey set 22 (EEG22) again onto a piece of scrap card that was leftover from a previous project (if you look closely you can make out a little bit of Kim Dellow's stamps - just to make this an even bigger mash up!)  I added it to the JOFY stem using foam pads just to lift it off the page a bit.

I used watercolour markers to colour in the JOFY flowers and stems, with a tiny bit of white paint pen added as highlights. This fabulous quote is from Emma Godfrey set 22 (EEG22) stamped using Ranger Archival ink in Jet Black, cut out and edged with the same black ink.  I love the way it stands out from the page as it's so bold and pretty large for this size of art journal.

I added some white highlights to the Emma Godfrey flower head which I think really make it pop.  This photo really shows how the background layers work together - the overlapping of multiple paint colours, stamp sets and ink colours adds a real textural feel.

I decided to glue the quote directly onto the page as it's so bold that it doesn't need anything extra.  I also didn't want to detract too much from the lovely Emma Godfrey/JOFY flower.

The last step was the add some splatter - I used two paint pens in pink and blue, just to give a little bit of contrast to the page.  A few white paint pen dots here and there and I decided it was finished!

 I made the choice not the edge the pages like I typically would - I am really enjoying seeing the kraft colour showing strongly at the edges.

One final comment is to point out that I added the final section of the quote over the top of my messy stamping near the ring binding - it doesn't quite cover it totally but it definitely draws the eye away from the stamping underneath it.

I hope you enjoyed my art journal pages today. Art journaling is a wonderful way to express your creativity and just have fun - it doesn't have to be perfect.  Just relax and have fun with it!

2021 Topic 7: Stamp Mash Up JOFY, EEG, ESN {by Etsuko Noguchi}

Something different from Etsuko to what we usually see and I love it! She has made 2 delightful cards using her chosen stamps from each of the following 4 collections: Emma Godfrey, Sara Naumann, Jo Firth-Young, plus a mini stamp.I love the stripped-back style of these and how the pink colour pops!
~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Etsuko (My favorite thingswith you today, and I'm here to share with you wonderful PaperArtsy stamps mush up with Jo Firth Young, Sara Naumann and Emma Godfrey

I've been making on a many mixed media projects lately, and today I'd like to show you two simple flowers cards I made.

I started with the background. I cut the Smoothly (Heavyweight) 4A white stamping card  into 8 x 5 inch pieces and applied Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Cerulean, Guacamole, Sage and Snowflake) in that order from the bottom to the middle. Fresco paint dries quickly, so I mix it with a little Golden ( Retarder ) with Fresco Paint. PaperArtsy has their own Drying Retarder, you can use that too, you only need a few drops.

When the first gradation of color is dry, use Jo Firth-Young Mini 14 (JM14) with Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Sage and Snowflake) and gradually add Snowflake from the bottom to lighten the color and stamp all over.

At the end of the background, I used Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Hint of Mint) with Jo Firth-Young Stencil 022 (PS022).

I then stamped the large and small circles from Emma Godfrey Set 15 ( EEG15 ) on the three places with VersaFine Clair ( Nocturne )

For the focal point petals, I finger painted Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Bubble Gum, Cherry Blossom, Peach Nectar and Blush) on Smoothy ( Heavyweight ) A4 white stamping card and used the lovely Jo Firth-Young Set 62 (JOFY62) stamped with VersaFine Clair (Nocturne). I cut and pasted them on the background.

The quote from Sara Naumann Set 10 (ESN10) are stamped by VersaFine Clair (Nocturne) then embossed with Ranger Embossing Powder (Clear), dark green kraft paper and Smoothy ( Heavyweight ) A4 white stamping card underneath.

For the background of the next card, I used Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Turquoise, Guacamole and Blue Oyster) with lots of water and Gel-printing for a watercolor touch.

Since there is only one flower used here, I decided to add the circular texture to the back. First I colored the edge of the circle with Ranger Archival ink ( Sky Blue ), embossed three times with Ranger UT Embossing Powder, and then stamped Sara Naumann Set 10 (ESN10) with the same Ranger Archival ink (Sky Blue) while it's hot.

The petals, stem and leaves were painted with Fresco Chalk Acrylic (Candy Floss and Blush) and (Winter Green and Sage) on Smoothy (Heavyweight) A4 white stamping card using brayer for each. When dry, I stamped Jo Firth-Young Set 52 (JOFY52) with VersaFine Clair (Nocturne).

Here's a closer look, I used watercolored pencils to add a little shading to the petals.

Finally, I stamped Sara Naumann Set 16 ( ESN16 ) quote with VersaFine Clair ( Nocturne ) on a piece of leftover paper, cut and pasted it. It's been a while since I've made a card, but I got carried away and had a lot of fun. The gel-printing with a lot of water gave an unexpected result, and I will try it again.

Thank you so much for visiting.
Take care and stay safe all.
