2018 #14: Baked Texture Transform with ESA {by Josefine Fouarge}

2018 Topic 14: Baked Texture

This is a lovely post from Josefine with many really cool ideas within! She has cooked up some resin magic for you along with other amazing textures! Check it out! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Josefine with you today. My "Baked Texture" project is very special to me as I have combined some of my favorite techniques, such as mono printing, with new ones, such as using resin to create a 3D element.

When I saw the topic "Baked Texture" I knew that I wanted to create something grungy, old looking. But I also wanted to combine it with a bright color. The new Fresco Finish Lemon Meringue (FF142) paint was my choice for the bright color and because I didn't want to lose it in my project, I decided to use this color for my embellishment. My husband got me hooked on working with resin so we mixed a little bit and colored it with a drop of Fresco Finish paint. Then we filled it into a chocolate mold to create a few gemstones. That had to dry over night.

While I was waiting for the resin to dry, I started with decorating my canvas. I brayered a variety of brown and red shades to the background to create that antique look. The Fresco Finish paints that I chose were Mud Splat (FF61), Taupe (FF60), Mahogany (FF124) and Autumn Fire (FF34).

Next, I used my Gel Press to "draw" three circles using Fresco Finish in Buff (FF96). This way I created a nice, opaque contrast to the background. Then I added a second layer on top of the circles using Autumn Fire (FF34). For one of the circles, I decided to use a stamp from the new Eclectica ESA09 set.

I removed some paint by stamping it onto the plate and then I pressed the plate on top of my canvas.

Of course, that was not enough texture, so I stamped a few more images all over the canvas using all of the stamps from the Eclectica ESA09 set, this time with Archival Ink in different red and brown shades. I really enjoyed the crossword stamp and all the circles that are part of the set.

Once I was done with stamping all the patterns that I wanted, I highlighted the circles by simply outlining them with a white acrylic paint pen. I framed the entire canvas with Fresco Finish Glacier Ice (FF132, part of Seth Apter paint set 4) which provided the right amount of contrast to the canvas. I also added the word "transform" to the left most circle.

The next day the resin jewels were dry and I decided to adhere one of them between two of the circles. It couldn't just sit there, so I mixed my own colored paste using texture paste and Mud Splat (FF61) and Mahogany (FF124) to match the colors of the background and applied it all around the gem.

I applied more paste which was colored using Fresco Finish in Buff (FF96) and mixed everything together, trying to match the grungy feel from the background. This took a little while and I went back and forth between the colors till I had a mix that I liked. In addition to the colored paste, I also included a few gold flakes and little styrofoam balls for texture.

After letting the paste dry, I worked a little more on the jewel. I added a few more contrast colors with Lemon Meringue (FF142), Glacier Ice (FF132, part of Seth Apter paint set 4) and Midnight (FF123). After I was satisfied with the result, I thought that it looks like something is hatching from a cocoon and not like a jewel anymore. So I decided to adhere a little butterfly on top of the gem, now matching the theme of the canvas perfectly.

Here is a close up of the texture around the resin 3D embellishment.

Thanks so much for joining me on my journey of combining known and new techniques. Have you tried working with resin in your art and coloring it using acrylic paints? If not, you should look into it. It's much easier than you might think.

See you next time.

Josefine, I get the impression of light breaking through a wall and love how the butterfly would be drawn to it. You did such an amazing job building layers and dimension on this piece and the resin idea is genius! Well done and thanks for the inspiration.
