"For my next project, I've used a Paper Mache Hanging Board which is very easy to paint and decorate, so easy that I decided to use both sides. I've chosen some of the PaperArtsy Vintage Collection which are enlarged images of some of the favourite original Ink and the Dog sets. I've gone for a masculine look this time and used up some of the experimental pieces of wax paper from yesterday's post".
Start out by painting your hanging board with Fresco Finish Acrylic Paints in your chosen colours. For this project I have used Gaucamole, Sky and Lilac.
Next stamp the "man collage" from the ID09EZ stamp plate twice onto Smoothy White Stamping Card and the edge of the leaf once onto Crunchy Wax Kraft Paper:
Leandra Says: remember tips from yesterday regarding inks
- Onto Crunchy waxed paper - heat the waxed craft paper and remove excess wax with a paper towel, then when cool, stamp with archival Jet black ink or Versafine Onyx Black.
- This stamp has incredible detail on the leaf and the man's coat. Onto smoothy you will find Versafine Ink will give the better detail than Archival. The ink is a bit thicker, and seems to stay put, whereas the Archival is slightly thinner, and keeps travelling, thus creating a noticeable bleed and a loss of detail onto Smoothy cardstock.

Paint the leaf, scrunch it up and ink the creases with Seedless Preserves Distress Ink pad:
Start adding some stamping to the background. I was toying with the idea of having some of the main image stamped directly onto the board but I didn't press hard enough!
So, I've used the stamped image on card and also stamped some clocks to fill in the gap above. As they were stamped onto white card, I coloured it with the Antique Linen Distress Ink pad to knock it back a little:
I then inked around the edges and added some paint to blend it in better with the background:
After that I added some scrunched up paper to diagonally opposite corners to start building up texture:
Next take two small pieces of wax paper, run through an embossing folder (I used the Tim Holtz Gridlock folder) and colour the raised areas with Portfolio OilPastels.
These are then ironed on to the other two corners to fill in gaps in your design:
They haven't actually come out that well the first time round but you can just keep ironing on scraps until you're happy. Note that I've stitched the scrunched up strips in purple thread - no great seamstress stitching here - just go for it! I've left the tails hanging to add interest.
I've then stamped and cut out some letters to stick on and added a touch of Treasure Gold Liquid Leaf in Florentine - that stuff's beautiful - I just painted it on the crumply bits, on the leaf and round the edges. I had to stop myself there!
I tend to leave adding twiddly bits 'til the end when I get all my brads, eyelets, embellies out to see what'll work. This can cause problems like here where I wanted to add the copper ring:
but the text was in the way and I didn't like it stuck on top. There's usually a way round: just carefully peel off the letters (as the background's painted and grungy you can touch up any areas that get torn):
I've then painted a steel letter with the Liquid Leaf and added it to the top corner - I've tucked it under the end of the scrunchy border. I like to have elements just overlapping to link the whole design up.
To finish off this side I pulled out the string from the top and threaded through some covered florist's wire by attaching it to a doll maker's needle - that's what that vicious looking thing is! Knew it would come in useful!
Add a length of copper chain round the bendy florist's wire and - hey presto! - here's the first side:
When you get bored of that side you can turn it over - we'll make side two tomorrow!
Helen!
Leandra Says:I love these boards, they are inexpensive, and generally easy to stamp on as they don't dip at all in the middle as you might expect, although Helen, you were super ambitious trying to stamp that particular image - why doesn't that surprise me!! Haha. Loving this colour combo too. Beautiful. That little touch of Liquid Leaf metallic is gorgeous. And it's fantastic how you show us what is going through your mind as you work. Very insightful! LOL
Gillian Says: Beautiful Helen, these hanging boards are my fave substrate to work on but the textures you have incorporated into this project are terrific as is all the finishing details.

I am amazed (though shouldn't be!) at how much texture you've got on here! This is one of my favourite stamp plates you've used, and all your crunchy waxed pieces work perfectly.
That's an incredible piece, the different textures are fantastic. I'm excited to see what you do with the other side. I must get some of these boards.
Fabulous textures , cannot wait for tomorrow , trace x
Wow Helen, this is fantastic ! I love how you've built up the layers and textures. I too have that moment when I've stuck something down and then decide it's in the way ! Great to see how you worked round it. Sue C x

GORGEOUS!
What a lovely board. So many different textures but colour and all the overlapping and repeating pieces make it a beautiful collage.

These posts are chocked with new techniques ! I'm in awe!!
Thanks for sharing.
Stunning art again - love all the bits and pieces, ironing the wax paper etc etc. My list is getting longer!!
So much going on! it's great, and all comes together perfectly at the end. I love seeing how you correct a mistake, I also do that - come up with an idea after sticking something in it's way!
