2021 Topic 14: Mash Up LPC EGL EEV EAB {by Nikki Acton}

2021 Topic 14: Mash Up LPC EGL EEV EAB

When you take images and use them in a new way, it opens up some many creative opportunities. Look through those faces and imagine the words that they're thinking in the background! Nikki has chopped up her stamped images to create something that's wonderfully graphic with an artsy flair.
~ Keren.

Hi everyone, Nikki here from Addicted to Art with you today. I am a great fan of our 'Mash Up' themes. I love the challenge of bringing things together that I wouldn't instinctively combine.

I was very inspired by some of Keren Baker's samples for the new Lynne Perrella release and her use of Duralar. I am yet to try this product but reached for some vellum in this project instead.

I am not sure what drew me to this colour choice - but started some background work using very roughly painted patches using Fresco Chalk Acrylics in Blueberry, Periwinkle and Byzantium. I then used the same colours along with Archival Inks to add some texture using Ellen Vargo's stamp sets EEV03 and EEV05.

I always do an extra scrap of background using the same colours, so if I need some coordinated coloured card I have some to hand. As you can see below this happened underneath the clock hand - to punch a small circle.

These hand carved style stamps are a 'go to' for me - for any background work and especially on my Gel plate (which is why some of them are VERY dirty!).

I am not quite sure what the theme of this project is - it evolved from wanting to use the vellum stamped faces and developed from there! I heat embossed the smallest image from Lynne Perrella stamp set - LPC053 with white embossing powder before using dies to cut out the circles.

On the reverse of the vellum I added some colour with Promarkers. On some card painted with Periwinkle, I stamped Gwen Lafleur's images from EGL01 with Versamark and heat embossed in gold.

I love how there are shapes within the shapes on this stamp set from Gwen; I often use only part of the images. The diamond has been used to create 2 triangles as well as the central circle forming the top layer of my compass in the middle.

The final designer stamps in the 'Mash Up' is Alison Bomber with her selection of wonderful quotes in various themed sets. On this occasion though I have used them not as quotes but as background text, and then selected some individual words.

I wanted the translucence of my vellum faces to have a gold background so used Fresco Chalk Acrylic in Gold to paint some card and then die cut some circles just bigger than the faces. I stamped these in Black Archival ink with one of Alison's quotes.

The stamps sets I used for the 4 individual words are Alison Bomber sets EAB16 (Walt Whitman quote) and EAB19 (George Bernard Shaw quote).

You often hear stamp designers say 'you don't have to use the entire stamp' - well I took them at their word here! The faces, the halved diamonds and the word quotes are all partial stamped images!

2020 Topic #18 Small journal cover with EGL (by Noguchi Etsuko)

      2020 Topic 18: Geometric

With a little more geometric styled patchwork but with a completely different vibe, Etsuko has poured lots of time and creative energy into this amazing journal cover. She obviously was inspired by Gwen's workshops, so do check those out too.
~ Keren

Hi everyone, it's Etsuko from My favorite things with you today, and I'd like to share with you a small journal cover featuring by Gwen's wonderful art for the current theme.

The 'geometric' theme was a little difficult, but interesting and challenging. The class I took at Gwen's workshop called 'Patchwork Pages' fitted perfectly with this theme so I thought it would be a good idea to make it here.

First I painted the background of each paper with a different Fresco paint and stamped on the Smoothy (Heavyweight) A4 white card. I used Fresco paint are SeaglassCaptain PeacockLemon MeringuePumpkin SoupVintage LaceWisteria, and Blueberry, stamps are EGL01EGL03 and EGL06.

I made the assigned hexagon pattern in Illustrator and cut each piece accordingly then connected each piece together to make these hexagons.

I cut some design papers to be a little larger than the original hexagon and stuck it to the bottom of the original hexagon so that it would be the margin. Then I made a circle in the center and finished the hexagonal parts. Also I made large and small paisleys on the Smoothy (Heavyweight) A4 white card by EGL07 for embellishments and painted with watercolor pencil. Next I embossed the ELB28 DREAMS with black powder and cut around it and distressed it with Sepia Archival.

Next I made the masterboard for the book cover. I stamped several stamps EGL07, JOFY62JOFY36 and JOFY41 on the copy papers by Versafine Clair Nocturne ink and also prepared the design paper.

I tore off each piece of the paper, collaged them on the Smoothy (Heavyweight) A4 white card, and distressed them in places with Fresco paint Toffee. I cut the collage paper in half to made the front and back covers.

I laid out the hexagonal motifs, glued the paisley embellishments and the word 'dreams' on the covers then I made the Catholic Stitch Bookbinding with the covers and watercolor papers of the same size.
To make the back cover paper, I painted Fresco paint Wisteria on the Smoothy (Heavyweight) A4 white card and when it dried I stamped EGL03 it all over by Blue Violet Archival.

I glued the paper to the back of the cover and distressed the edges with Sepia Archival to make it look old.

Finally I made a tassle with Kochis charms and beads attached to the spine.

I had a lot of fun using Gwen's stamps and although they take a little bit of work, I find myself getting hooked on them in the process of making them. Please feel free to contact me on using Facebook etc. if you have any questions about my photos or explanations. This idea  was from Gwen's workshop 'Patchwork Pages' if you are interested in this please visit her site as she has more workshops.

Thank you so much for visiting.

2020 #14 Mandala's and Fish with Gwen Lafleur stamps {by Nikki Acton}

 2020 Topic 14: Fused

Ohhhh, check out this cool underwater fusing from Nikki, she's successfully fused fabric with embossing powder! Wonderful colour and those stamps by Gwen are an absolute delight in how versatile they are to work with!
~ Leandra

Hi, Nikki here today, from Addicted to Art, with my 'Fused' project - I have used embossing powder to fuse together layers and also embed some fabric.

I have a couple of Gwen Lafleur's stamp sets and couldn't decide which to use so I went with both - Mandala's (EGL01) and Fish (EGL04) - not an obvious combination!

I started by stamping some mandalas and colouring them in - I used Polychromos Coloured Pencils for  this. On the smaller two I repeated the middle section to build the layers and also added a little rhinestone before adding versamark and heat embossing with clear powder. I repeated this a couple of times to build it up. You can see some of the embossed surface has cracked here - but I went with it. (The downside of doing it on flexible card - the hardened embossed surface cam crack if you are not careful.)
Having coloured the larger mandala I heat embossed before adhering some material and the fish - then added more layers of embossing.
My background is a wooden panel.

I layered PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylics with my brayer before adding some additional stamping - the fish from EGL04 and the sea plants from ESC10.

I added my fused mandala's over some twine using foam pads to elevate them slightly. I love the glossy effect over the very matt background - bringing the mandalas and fish more to the forefront.
