Corrie has used different parts of maps to great effect with two fabulous projects that have the theme of journey too. Love the way that she's used the index part of the map to create a tag.

Hi everyone, it's Corrie from MadeByCHook today, and I'd like to share two projects  with you. I enjoyed the topic so much that I had to make a second project! I have used the same  map of Florida for both projects.

In my first project I have used the map as collage material in my background but also to stamp the main image on. I really like collaging and use lots of different materials to do this, mainly in my art journal spreads.

The first project is an art journal spread. I do all sorts of things but art journaling is still my firm favourite! It is so nice to just create and when you finish put the book away and feel better for creating something. I'll show you how I did it :

I started with gluing down some pieces of my Florida map and then started painting the pages with Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics. I used Limelight, Turquoise, Zesty Zing, Snowflake and Little Black Dress for this project.

    

Here are the finished painted pages. I didn't take too much care to paint them as this background is not finished by far and you won't see much of it once I am finished !

Next step was to add stencilling with white paint Snowflake and stencil PS034 by Kim Dellow. This is the third layer of one of my favourite ways of doing backgrounds...

The fourth layer involves brayering white paint over the whole thing to tone it down but also to add more interest. I love this effect and now the background is ready for stamping.

So I used stamps from Hot Picks HP1207 and HP1110 with Archival Inks Leaf Green. Aquamarine, Jet Black.

 

Next I added stamping with Distress Oxide (Carved Pumpkin) and I also added some black Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic paint {Little Black Dress} around the edges with a palette knife.

The focal image is part of a stamp from Hot Picks set HP1207. I stamped it on a piece of map, tore it out and then stamped it again on white card stock. All I wanted was the car to colour and adhere over the map. I then added the whole thing onto the edge of the page and cut off the excess.  The last thing was the sentiment; it is made from the text chips by Tim Holtz. I did tear some of the layers off because they were so thick! I added some paint around them and then adhered them to my pages.

I thoroughly enjoyed this process and could just go on and make another one and another one...  I love art journaling and can't say enough how relaxing it is and because I felt I wanted to do something more, I made another project but this one is a small one. You could do this in a journal too if you'd like. 

For my tag I used the index of place names of the map as a background. I cut a tag shape out of heavyweight  {Smoothy Card} and glued the map on the top, cutting off the excess. 

I made sure to use translucent Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics: Hey Pesto, Zesty Zing and Tango  so that the place names can still be read.

This little bonus project was fun to make and not too difficult. Here's how:

After the glue dried, I added these three colours of Fresco Finish to the tag with a brayer, making sure to blend them into each other. Because the paper wasn't all flat the orange paint went on a little blotchy which in this case I love !

I used two stamps from Hot Picks set {HP1207} for this. I stamped both on my tag and the girls with the car were also stamped on white card stock, coloured and cut out.

For the colouring I used Distress Ink and a waterbrush and some coloured pencils. I then cut it out and adhered it on top of the stamped image on the tag. I added some more shading with a dark green marker under the girls and the car.

I finished it off with a Small Talk sticker by Tim Holtz which I cut in three pieces before adhering to the tag. Lastly I used a pencil to go around the bottom left and top right edges and some Archival ink (Potting Soil) to age all the edges.

I hope I didn't bore you with my long post but I had so much fun making these two projects that I had to show you! I hope I inspired you to have a go yourself with this topic of using maps or plans; I could think of a few other things to use them for. What about die cutting flowers, choosing where to cut to get the right colours? Or just use them to stamp on, as a ready made background for cards and tags. Above all, have fun with the topic!
