NEW PaperArtsy Products {Lynne Perrella Collection} with Alison Bomber

NEW PaperArtsy Products - Sept 2018
 Lynne Perrella Collection

If you have seen the blog yesterday, you will know we announced some new gorgeous stamps by Lynne Perrella. These 3 sets take her up to a grand total of 40 stamps sets that she has designed for us. Today we have a post by Alison Bomber using Lynne's newest stamps! Enjoy! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, Alison here from Words and Pictures and I'm thrilled and honoured to be here to share some samples made with Lynne Perrella's newest stamps designed for PaperArtsy.

I've always been fascinated by Ancient Egypt - the extraordinary Pyramids and temples, the art, the hieroglyphics, the golden treasures of the tombs, scarabs and cartouches.  I made these samples without having read Lynne's fascinating insights into her design process for these glorious Egyptian sets (see yesterday's launch post if you missed them), but I found that I'd been led down exactly those imaginative paths she mentions.   The art on the walls of the tombs, the decorative jewellery of a lost people, and the sense of half-buried ancient civilisations all come alive in these stamps, and that definitely inspired me as I played with them.

In case you missed the announcement yesterday - here are the stamps themselves.

  Lynne's New Stamps
Price: RRP £17.08 +VAT
Size: 5" x 6.5" (13cm x 16.5cm)

Lynne Perrella Collection 038 (LPC038)

Lynne Perrella Collection 039 (LPC039)

Lynne Perrella Collection 040 (LPC040)

Project One: By the Door of a Tomb

My samples came to life in pairs.  The first two tags are tapping in to the incredible artwork found on the walls of tombs, and the stories they tell.  Here's the first one.

When I was little I had a favourite picture book that I used to get out of the library regularly, which told tales of Ra, Horus and Anubis - some of the Ancient Egyptian gods.  The illustrations were all in the style of those wall paintings from thousands of years ago, so I felt right at home with this stamp from LPC038.

I had a glorious time bringing her to life with paint on a sandy sunbaked wall.  I added a beetle or two from the same set, scurrying up the wall along the edges, just out of reach.  I used the text stamp from LPC040 to add texture to the background.  And she's standing on the sunbaked dunes of Seth's Dirty Sand Baked Texture embossing powder.

Project Two: Immortal Beauty

The partner tag uses the incredible woman from LPC040, as well as the deliciously intricate sun symbol from the same set.  Again, the inspiration is art on a sandstone wall, but this time you can also see the influence of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries - a time when interest in Ancient Egypt and archeological excavations of the tombs were heading towards fever pitch.

The golden sun beats down on the sandy walls, again with text detail and beetles trying to evade the heat.  Like the ancient civilisation she belongs to, her beauty will be remembered forever.

Just look at the beautiful, delicate details around her head - like a Mucha painting or a Tiffany stained glass window.

Project Three: The Golden Fish

These next two tags are influenced by the golden treasures found in those tomb excavations.  The Ancient Egyptians must have been one of the most decadently decorated peoples of all time... and the gold... so much gold!  As soon as I saw this fish from LPC040, he reminded me of those articulated gold fish pendants you used to see a lot, so that's what lies behind this first tag of the pair.

Initially, I was going to try to make one of those pendants, but when it came to it, I couldn't bear to cut him up, so he stayed in one piece.  (I have got a spare, though, so I will give it a go quite soon!)  He's dangling on a golden chain, carefully guarded by those sun symbols, who are keeping a beady eye out for anyone who might be trying a bit of tomb-raiding.

The background is built out of the text "brick" from the same set.  The stamp with its runic lettering is perfect to represent the huge limestone blocks of the Pyramids, which have lettering carved into them in real life... much of it graffiti from down the ages.

Project Four: Scarab Beetles

This second jewellery tag celebrates the Egyptians' obsession with scarabs.  Beetles were associated with rebirth or regeneration, so carved beetle amulets known as scarabs were hugely popular throughout the reigns of the Pharaohs, and were carried for luck, or worn decoratively in jewelled versions.  Here are mine...

The glassy jewel coloured beetles from LPC038 are mounted in gleaming gold frames, and hung on golden chains.

These pendants are guarded by the beautiful woman from the same set, again in an Art Deco style setting, keeping an eye on the scarabs from every direction.  And the text-carved "bricks" give subtle texture to the background.

Project Five: Watching and Waiting

This final pair of projects is inspired by the idea of a long buried civilisation coming to light again after centuries lost in the sands of time.  In this first one, the memory of the Ancient Egyptians is hovering in the air, waiting and watching for the time when the glories of that age will once again be revealed.

The ruined temples and palaces are half buried in the sands of the desert - all those treasures just waiting to be uncovered.  As well as the "runic brick", the crumbling buildings are constructed using the top of the tall tower stamp, also on LPC039.

This woman from LPC039 vies with the first, more traditional Ancient Egyptian one for the position of my favourite so far from these sets. Just look at her ibis headdress - could it be more magnificent?

Project Six: Taken from the Past

Finally, here's another commemoration of that golden civilisation half-buried in, half emerging from the desert sands.  I was lucky enough to visit Egypt - the realisation of a lifelong dream - and to see many of the ancient monuments with my own eyes.   They are just as impressive and evocative as in my imagination, and in some cases even more so.  It's very hard to wrap your head around the sheer scale of their ambition as a civilisation - the size of the structures they built, the golden riches they created, and the knowledge they had - let alone the mind-spinning age of it all.

Here, the gold of the decorative temple, a gold-embossed version of the stamp at the bottom of the LPC039 plate, gleams against a vivid blue sky...

... as it emerges from the sand dunes.  But all it would take is another few centuries of sandstorms, winds and erosions, or manmade interference, and it could all disappear beneath the desert again.

I think you can probably tell how much fun I had spinning stories to myself as I played with these incredible stamps.  They have wonder and awe built into them in the same way as the ancient civilisation they celebrate has.  I'll be sharing some more details of these creations over at Words and Pictures in the coming days, so do keep an eye out if you're interested in how they were made.  I can't wait to create some papyrus parchments, some more jewelled ornaments, and some more sandstone tags - and I know you'll be inspired too by these latest amazing Lynne Perrella designs.

Happy Crafting all!
Alison xx
