2017 #16: Rusting Fabric with EEA {by Miriam Grazier}

2017 Topic 16: Rustification

Miriam has some great advice in this for rusting a stamped image onto fabric! And it looks gorgeous!!

Hi everyone, it's Miriam from Miriam's Creative Dreams with you today, and I'd like to share with you a panel that I created using different rusting methods.

The main image was stamped using glue onto a cotton panel and then covered with rusting powder.  After experimenting with this technique I loved the soft but rusted image that was created and was delighted how clear the image stamped.  The watch out here, however, is that you need to make sure that you clean your stamp immediately to wash away the glue.  .

My first experiment with creating rust onto cotton didn't work. I had stamped the image with glue, sprinkled rusting powder and lightly sprayed with water.  This only created a tiny bit of rust after 24 hours.  This ended up going in the bin and I tried the rust technique again.

This time I squeezed lemon juice over the sprinkled powder.  After a couple of hours I could see that I had been successful this time around.

I then left this overnight and was delighted with my finished rusty image.

I then started to create a weathered and rusting background panel for my cotton panel to be layered on.

To create this, I stippled Fresco chalk paints from Seth Apter's second set. FFSA2

I kept layering and drying each layer before adding the next.  At one stage I thought I had ruined the panel, but Fresco chalk paints layer and work together really well.  I was really happy with the results.

I also stamped the word 'art' from Everything Art set 5 and cut around them.

Eclectica³ {Everything Art} Set 05

Once I layered my cotton and weathered panels together, I selected rusted embellishments from my stash to add the finishing touches.

One of the things that I really liked about this project was how clear the main image appeared on the cotton panel.

I was still able to see the words from the main image clearly - despite the rust.  This shows how good and detailed these stamps are.

I had great fun creating this project, despite my first rust attempt not going well.  I really hope that I have inspired you today to have a go yourselves.  Just don't forget that if you stamp using glue you must clean the stamp immediately.

Thanks for joining me this evening.  You can see the full details of how I created this project by heading over to my blog.

Happy creating!
Miriam

This worked so well. I'd be chuffed to bits! It's a tricky balance with Rusting Powder you need to get it to stick and then dry to the glue, and then you can commence rusting. You must have had glue the perfect consistency, because for such a fine detailed stamp, that really IS a challenge, and you totally aced it!

Gorgeous colours Miriam! I really like the idea of stamping rust on fabric, but I can't see that happening in time for the challenge... nor can I see my rusted grungy paste making it either, for that matter!
