2015 #19 Broken Doll {by Deb Wainwright}

2015 Topic 19: Faces

Hi everyone Debs here, joining you this evening with a post about Faces. When I was asked to contribute to this topic I jumped at the chance, as I just love drawing and painting faces. Even as little girl I liked to draw, and faces were something I would do over and over again.

Being the month of Halloween, I chose to create a doll’s face, as I think there is something quite spooky about dolls, especially the old porcelain ones. I wanted to give the idea of an old discarded doll thrown away into the corner, broken!

Step One: I tore up some pages from Bella Rouge Journalling note cards and adhered them to my Smoothy Card using Soft Matt Medium.

Step Two: I roughly sketched out where the head and hair would be, and blocked in some colour with Beach Hut, Guacamole, Honey Dew, and Orchid Fresco Acrylic Paints. As soon as I laid down the paint I spritz with water creating some drips. For her hair I mixed Little Black Dress with Golden Fibre Paste and scrapped it on with a palette knife, to create lots of texture? In areas around the background I applied Golden Glass Bead Gel with a palette knife to balance the composition.

Step Three: I started adding colour to my face with a coat of Nougat and once dry, I sketched in my features and started to work on the darks for shadow using Blue Glass I also added some pattern to the back ground using the same colours as above and ELB 04 I love how the colours and flowers have created a vintage feel to what I think looks like wallpaper.

Step Four: I continued to work on the face blending and painting until I'm happy with her. At this point it was crying out to have the cracks added. I followed the edges of the paper in the background which worked very well with the face. I also added an outline around the body and head to add some shadow using a black water soluble pencil.

Step Five Now that her hair was fully dry I gave it a coat of Little Black Dress and then to give it some shine I used a Gloss Sealer. Any Gloss Gel would also work.

I really love mix the different textures I've incorporated into the face to age it, to fit with idea of being broken.

Faces are a fabulous way to create expression, we are born reading faces for information, and will find it in the simplest mark making, whether it's a scribble or sketch, roughly painted or fine art all are interesting and can spark the imagination.

I hope I have sparked your inspiration to have a go at creating a face and enter the challenge. I cannot wait to see what you create.

Take Care Debs xx

Love the texture on this, Debs. It suits the topic perfectly and has a real discarded doll look to it! The hair is particularly impressive. It's a great idea for a Halloween theme too. It reminds me of the dolls in Pollock's toy museum in London! I love it there! xx

Did you know they can repair cracks in porcelain and china antiques now Debs!!!??!!!! Poor little doll. She really must have been carried away by something ghoulish to get so many cracks and her hair so stretched - but through it all - she still looks very sweet. Guess that's how we are in real life - ghoulish things happen to us, crack us, stretch us, but... if we keep our focus on the right things - we come through better people in the end! What a great work of art you have done here... your faces are just incredible! j.
