2015 Topic 12: Stencils
Hi everyone Anneke here,
joining you this evening with a post about stencils. I do love
stencils! I have a huge stencil collection - all kinds of brands - and I
use them a lot in my work. I can't imagine a creative life without
stencils anymore :)
This
evening I want to walk you through a gelli print technique. I used
acrylic paints in combination with stencils and stamps to "print" a
cover for a simple sketchbook. Front
Back
I bought a cheap A5 sketchbook in a local store. I removed the cover by taking out the staples.
For the new cover I used an A4 sheet of Smoothy 340 grs Heavy Card Stock. This sheet has exact the same size as the black cover.
I made prints with a small gel printing plate (3 x 5") from Gelli Arts ® in combination with stencils and stamps from the JOFY 36 set.
I
attached the small gel printing plate to an acrylic block and used it
as a stamp. First I made a simple print, no stencils involved yet.
I brayered turquoise paint on the plate and stamped. Next I pushed the
Dot Fade Layering Stencil by Tim Holtz into the leftover paint on the
plate and made a print.
Here I pushed the JOFY 008 stencil into the lime paint before printing.
At the top you see the first print, I made a second print on top of the turquoise rectangle.
Here I stamped with the big flower from the JOFY 36 set into orange paint before printing.
As you can see there was enough paint on the gel printing plate to make a second and a third print.
Here I brayered light blue and orange paint on the plate and stamped on it before printing.
I continued printing...tried not to overlap the rectangles to much.
I put a stencil directly on the paper and stamped with pink paint through the stencil.
There
was 'no room' for a second print here but as you can see there was
still a lot of paint left on the gel printing plate. I always have some
paper scraps by hand on which I can print leftover paint.
I added the word 'bloom' while sponging through the JOFY 008 stencil with a cosmetic sponge and turquoise paint. The gel printing plate works as a palette too :)
I added white, turquoise and pink dots with the Tim Holtz Layering stencil 'Dot Fade'.
I sponged flowers with white heavy body acrylic paint and the JOFY 009 stencil. I made dots with fuchsia paint and the 'Mini Circle Grid' stencil by The Crafter's Workshop.
To finish it off I added some stamping with Archival Ink 'Jet Black'.
Lot's of layers, that's what I like :)
I added accents to the stamped circles with a white Sharpie.
I attached the inside pages to the cover with some cord instead of staples.
I love the small gel printing plate by Gelli Arts ® , it is super easy to work with. It is perfectly possible to print with Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics. I did it before, see this post. As the chalk paint dries quickly I would recommend you to mix it with some glaze to increase the printing time. I hope you'll dig up your stencils and join in with the challenge.
Thanks for watching!

The Gelli Print technique has worked brilliantly, great layering effect and use of bright colours, finished off perfectly by the use of bold white shapes. Thanks Anneke for sharing your creativity.

I to am a stencil lover and this lovely project of Anneke's has shown me another way to use them. Wonderful inspiration and so bright and cheerful too. Just what we need on a wet and dreary 'summer' evening!
