NEW PaperArtsy Products: Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur {February 2021}

  Eclectica³ Collection {Gwen Lafleur}

February 2021 New Product Announcement

A note from Leandra:
Three stamp sets with 3 different themes, but wait until you see how Gwen manages to pull all 3 into one project at the end of this post! I love how delicate and intricate these designs are, and the stand alone nature of each set is also really nice. Each set is so very 'Gwen' and I'm itching to see the amazing classes she offers with them!

Don't forget we have Gwen here to share these stamps live in PaperArtsy People shortly after this post publishes. It's nice to meet the designer and hear direct from them about this new release, so i hope you can catch them, LIVE or on the replay.

These stamps are ONLY available EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists for the next 3-4 months. With freight prices soaring due to fewer flights worldwide, it makes sense to buy local within your country, see the list and links at the bottom of this blog post.

I hope you really enjoy checking out these new products today, don't forget to leave a comment for the designer at the foot of the post.

Hi everyone, Gwen here!

I'm thrilled to be sharing my latest PaperArtsy release with you - three new hand-drawn stamp sets.

This release is, as usual, the result of a mashup of diverse inspirations... I've always felt that my work and designs fit well under the "Eclectica" banner because they're... well... eclectic! For this latest batch of stamps I've brought together my love of flowers, some fun and versatile frames that were inspired by everything from my travels to a mirror in my apartment, and a more global / tribal inspired set featuring one of my personal symbols, fish.

  New Stamps
Price: RRP €21.92 +VAT
Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur Set 13 (EGL13)

This set, EGL13, is the one I call Botanical Illustrations because it's completely based off of sketches that I took directly out of one of my sketchbooks. I love to use flowers, berries, and leaves as common motifs in my work and I'm super excited to have these drawings now available as rubber stamps.

For this piece, I love the way that the watercolored flowers pair so perfectly with the shabby chic collaged background and the grungier collaged and textured "vases." I adore the contrast of styles combined together in this piece as well as the bright and happy flowers in the midst of the gloomy winter weather here in my part of the world.

Here you can see all of the fun little details - I used lots of scraps of papers with bits of my stencil designs (from StencilGirl Products) as well as previous stamp designs peeking out here and there. I love the texture and dimension from the different fibers and fabrics I layered in here. You can also see where I added words to each vase in tiny hand-written letters... all together it reads, "Bloom where you are planted."

This piece uses all six of the stamps in the set (I cut apart one of the leaf images and added pieces of it tucked into the vases.) While I love having them all together, I think this concept would also be awesome with just a single bloom for an ATC or as a focal image to go with a sentiment on a card or tag.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur Set 14 (EGL14)

EGL14 is the set that I call "Ornate Frames." It's a mix of lots of different inspirations including a large mirror in my apartment, a mandala, the border from a bronze warrior statue that I have from India, a postage stamp, a piece of jewelry, and a floral frame that popped into my head as a fully formed idea and just had to be drawn and included here.

While you can absolutely use these frame stamps to frame a word, a letter, journaling, and lots more, in this project I wanted to show how you can also combine and repeat them to make a fabulous design statement. Here you can see what a cool layered effect you can get by leveraging the openings inside of each frame to create opportunities for windows and layers of images peeking through.

I also love the look of just repeating one of the frame stamps over and over again - it makes a fantastic background or patterned paper, which in this case became the spine for my journal.

Here you can see how I used masking to stamp a frame within a frame and to use the flowers from one frame and made them look as if they were blooming and bursting out of another frame. I love how positioning the designs in non-traditional ways and layering them with lines and marks creates an unexpected page in my journal. There's still lots of room here for me to add some letters, journaling, or more marks and / or images.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur Set 15 (EGL15)

EGL15 features my Tribal Fish designs - four fish filled with lots and lots of detailed patterns along with some fun coordinating accent and background images. For this project I used all eight stamps to create three of what I call, "Art Cards" - small pieces of art on oversized playing or flash cards. I love how they came out and how well the illustrative style of the stamps works so perfectly with the layers and grunge of the background (and also just a hint of bling from some gilding flakes.)

I really like the way that stamping and then coloring the fish images on vellum and then layering that over the background hints at an underwater scene.

The patterns on these fish have some common elements between them, but each one of them is definitely an individual! They were so much fun to draw and I love how well the details come out when they're stamped. You can just color over the entire area, stamp them over painted swatches, or get super detailed - I love how having all of those details actually gives you options to really vary the look from project to project.

I love the floral elements in the top fish shown on this project - there's so much pattern in each of these that you don't always have to stamp them as a fish... you could use them without mounting on an acrylic block to get bits and pieces of pattern if you just want some texture in your work.

Project: Fish-Flower-Frame Collage Mashup

While some of you may be wondering how all of these sets could possibly work together, I actually knew how I wanted to combine them and had an idea pop into my head for this project before I had even finished designing the stamps. I'm so excited that now that the stamps are a reality that the idea works just as well as I'd pictured - maybe even better!

For today's project I've made a mixed media collage with a mashup of images from all three stamp sets as the focal point. Ready to get started?

First I collaged some different papers onto a piece of watercolor paper (it was about 10" x 10".) I used bits of vintage maps and book text along with scraps of collage papers from previous projects - a few of which have some of my older stamps visible (I thought the fish from EGL04 would be the perfect addition to this piece.)

Next I pulled out two of my Gel Press gelatin plates - I used 4" and 6" round plates along with a brayer and PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylic Paint in Twilight, Nougat, and Caramel. For the first layer I used Twilight, my darkest color, on the 6" Gel Press and stamped the whole plate onto my background. When that was dry, I used Nougat on the 4" Gel press and stamped that on top and slightly off-center.

Once the Nougat layer was dry, I repeated the process with my 4" Gel Press with the Caramel Fresco Acrylic Paint, stamping it directly on top of the Nougat layer. Putting the lighter opaque layer in between makes it so that the Caramel stands out on top of the dark background. I also added in some gilding flakes to add a bit of glam and shine and then collaged down the scrap you see leaning against my matte medium on top of my Caramel circle.

I set the background aside to let it dry completely and worked on the elements of my focal point. I stamped one of the fish, the tall frame (which I deliberately designed to be big enough for the fish to fit into,) as well as some of the leaves and flowers from EGL13 onto PaperArtsy Smoothy Card (regular weight) using Jet Black Archival Ink. I colored them with colored pencils and then cut them out, including the center of the frame image.

Next I started layering my focal elements, gluing them in place as I went. I also pulled out a scrap of the stamped acetate from the project I shared for EGL14 and adhered that behind the frame (after putting the fish through the opening.) I used a small blender brush and some ink to add a bit of framing and cover up some of the the white cut edges.

Finally I positioned my focal element on the page and adhered it in place. I also decided to add a secondary image using the stamp frame and used a mask to add some flowers from EGL13 in the opening. I finished the page by choosing a background element from EGL15 and stamped it in a few areas on the background to strengthen the visual triangle, add some elements of repetition, and tie the patterns from the fish into the background.

Here you can see a closeup showing how well such disparate pieces worked together to create an unexpected but also very fun and interesting focal point for my piece.

That's all for now - thank you all for joining me today! I hope you enjoyed the samples and the project tutorial. I'm very, very excited about this latest collection of stamps and I hope that you are as well. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you create with them!
