2020 Topic 2: A Hint of Spring

Using some soft pinks, NEW purples and a fab cluster of sisal, Miriam has whipped up some really lovely gifts that get the most 'bang for your buck' from only one piece of A4 cardstock!

Hi everyone, it's Miriam with you today, and I'd like to share with you a note book that I have altered and a coordinating card.  

I don't know about you, but after Christmas I find myself in a crafting slump - the craziness of Christmas card making has ended and winter has set in along with dark nights.  So I love to play around without thinking and use brighter and happier colours which remind me of warmer and lighter days to come.  I also love stocking up on cheap note books in the Christmas sales as these can be easily altered and given as gifts throughout the year.

I don't know about you but I am loving the new releases of the Fresco Acrylic paints.  And the latest release are simply perfect for Spring projects.  They make me think of flowers starting to bloom in the garden.

 

The background for the notebook and card were both from one sheet of card that I brayered with paint and then stencilled with the new Sara Naumann stencils.  These are fast becoming my favourites; some of the collaged elements are fabulous and the circle stencil is so versatile.

I added stamping using the script part of one of the new Sara Naumann stamps ESN41- this stamp is a really good size and beautiful.  Even better, it stamps using paint really well, leaving a crisp image.

The main image was stamped firstly in ink directly onto the background card and then separately onto white card using Khaki Fresco Acrylic paint.

I drew around the inked image to create a shadow, before adding Sisal to give extra texture and the paint inked image in top. 

I love the sentiments and quotes that come with the latest release stamps too; they will be used many times in my projects.

I really loved creating this note book and card.  They certainly made me feel ready for Spring and got me out of the Christmas crafting rut!

I hope that I have encouraged you to have a go yourself.  Maybe create your own unique altered notebooks and use colours that will remind you if warmer weather to come.  I love how a simple brayered sheet of card can create so much depth and every time I look at my projects I see another element.  What is even better, is that I have enough sheet left to create another card and a matching tag or book mark.  All with one A4 sheet.

2019 #16 Stamp Carving: Tissue Paper Marking with ELB {by Jennie Atkinson}

Jennie's pinky, soft and ethereal trio kicks off the stamp carving topic so beautifully. Layer upon layer of images and marks creates mini dimensional works of art. She's got some great tips about using tissue paper with her gel plate too!

Hi everyone, it's Jennie (Live The Dream)  with you today sharing a trio of ATCs using tissue paper to showcase Lin Brown's fabulous Artful Blooms stamps which look just as though they had been carved into the rubber.

I have become somewhat obsessed with the combination of tissue paper and my gelli plate and thought these stunning outline style stamps would be just perfect for creating a delicate impression on the tissue paper. I have also combined this technique with two wonderful new PaperArtsy Frescos which being pink are just up my street!

To finish my ATCs I have also used stamps from Scrapcosy's ESC18 and quotes from Alison's EAB01 set.

It is difficult to photograph the technique of using gel plate and tissue paper as you do have to do things quite quickly before the tissue paper sticks to the plate! I brayered Byzantium, Taro Milk Tea and a little Tinned Peas onto the gel plate and stamped the large flower stamp here and there before taking a print using the tissue paper. It's a "one pull" technique!

A word about tissue paper: not all tissue paper works! Sometimes the supermarket tissue works well and sometimes not! if you can get something a little thicker and has a shiny side and a matte side you can use the matte side down and this seems to give the better print. 

Also another tip is to make sure you always have a flap of paper at one side so you can peel it off the plate, otherwise you will find that if you smooth everything down it is a struggle to get it started and it starts to tear.

When it is wet the tissue paper is crumpled and it is difficult to see the marks. Don't worry about white spaces where the paper creased - this all adds to the effect!

The tissue has now dried and I have stuck it down using Collage Medium onto an ATC which has had text stamped on it with Jet Black Archival Ink. Now that the tissue paper is on a white surface it becomes translucent (despite the paint and the stamp image), wrinkles and "missed bits" really stand out.  I just love the way the carved image becomes part of the background and is why I  often get asked "How did you do that ?"  (I should add that this photograph was taken on a very stormy day in the craft room and the colours are completely different!)

I didn't want to spoil the ethereal look so have used my stamps on tissue paper and layered them onto the ATC. I do find that the thicker tissue paper is not so great for this and normally revert to something a little thinner so it blends into the background.

I have used Watering Can Archival Ink for the background stamping as it is lighter in tone which allows the quotes to stand out in the black ink. As I have stamped on tissue paper and adhered with collage medium the image is slightly blurry which is why some of the stamping looks out of focus in the photographs - it is not so obvious when viewing the ATCs.

I have tried to place my stamping so I don't lose the Artful Bloom image and the beauty of stamping on tissue allows me to experiment with placement.

These ATCs make a lovely little trio for swapping or, as you have probably seen me do in the past, they look fabulous layered onto plain white Smoothy cardstock for birthday and any occasion cards. I always have quite a stack just ready to make into cards! 

I do hope this inspires you to have a go at this technique. It is absolutely perfect for mark making stamps which do not have too much detail which can get lost when layered onto the text stamped cardstock below. It is quite addictive, so have plenty of tissue paper cut to size before you start !

A note from Leandra:
In July, I managed to sit down for a couple of weeks and work out a new plan for the Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics. I decided the best plan was to set aside the designer paints into their own series, and re-group the remaining into our core collection. Families of 6 seemed to make the most sense.

This meant a few tweaks and created a number of gaps, around , to fill. Yes there WILL be a new paint chart, but we cannot create it until we have WET samples of all the new colours, and the magic paint lady is sending me over a few each week, so please be patient!

In this post I am sharing 11 of the new groups, which includes the reveal of 8 new colours, and 2 discontinued shades which are being brought back into the fold!

I'm sure the eagle eyed among you will identify the new shades immediately.

First up we have 2 new blues: Summer Sky, Aquamarine

Next up we have 2 more blue-purples: Periwinkle and Forget-Me-Not

The Brown Family below has a new member - it's a warm-white Cloud 9 (opaque)


 And yes, Sand is another newbie in this group (coming next month)

 I'm just showing this set so that you can compare the whites.

As we head into the greens, we have a nice new crisp green called Lawn (Opaque). 

It has a touch of yellow-warmth to it, and will be a really useful grassy green.

Again, nothing new, although I have had to revise a couple of shades.

I have had a bit of a play with the new colours over the past few weeks. The green is kind of the odd man out, but the rest sit together and blend easily, well.... so does the green, depending on how you want to introduce it!! Normally I steer well clear of green and purple, because if mixed together while wet you will get brown - that's OK if you want brown, a bit rubbish if you don't! So be careful, however, I have one sample below wher I got all the colours involved happily together!

Project One: JoFY Tall Flowers

Intro: I quite like making a pair of 'somethings' . This occurred naturally, because (of course) I started with a brayered masterboard using all the blues, purples, Cloud 9 and a spot of stenciling too.

Then I added some colour. Did you know you can make a paint less opaque by blending it with a glaze? This is super easy if you add a spot of satin glaze to your craft sheet. Dip in the tip of your round paint brush, then dip into the tiniest amount of the opaque paint colour, and blend both out onto the area you wish to colour. no need to pre-mix, thats too much faffing! See how bit of the background can still be seen under the colouring? That is because I reduced the opacity with the glaze. Also the lawn green was lightened with Cloud 9 and then applied for a softer shade of Lawn-green.

I stencilled with that fab stencil by Jo (PS139) and Cloud 9 applied to Cut N Dry foam. I did not want a really opaque coverage of the stenciling either, so the circular, smooching technique works perfectly for this, and maybe a spot of sanding with a white sanding block too. The script is from ECF03.

Project Two:Gel-oopy

Intro: Love this tall loopy flower by JoFY (JOFY89), and as well as making masterboards with the brayer, I was also taking some gel prints. This background was kind of my clean up sheet that I wasn't really paying much attention to. However, realising I had neglected Lawn, when I stumbled across this in the pile of papers, it was a perfect starting point, just needed to bring some of the purple colours on top with the colouring. The little border lumps are from JoFY79.

Again, the satin glaze played a big part in my colouring in strategy. And the obligatory white sharpie fine point paint pen! So opaque it deals with all the tiny areas easily. That's also my go-to for all the diddy dots too, or the Signo uni-ball white gel pen, that is also fab!

Project Three: The Eyes Have It

Intro: The background as you can see is a large gel-plate print , then I also printed through the large JoFY stencil (PS130) to get those flowers at the top.

Then, channeling Lauren, I turned a leafy thing from JoFY82  into a pair of eyes A few stalk embellishments from the same plate, and some colouring. I did have to block out the 'eyeball' area to recreate the pupil section, but I just took it slowly. Kind of looks like a mask for a masquerade ball. Lots of fun to make something unusual, I get why Lauren enjoys doing this so much!
