2019 #15 Picasso in Coral with JOFY {by Helen Chilton}

2019 Topic 15: Coral

The coral topic is stretching lots of our bloggers to use new colours. Helen has done some really intricate painting onto a canvas that's produced such a beautiful textured result and some clever uses of the 'twirly' stamp.

Hi everyone, it's Helen with you today, and I'd like to share with you a canvas with a quote from Pablo Picasso.
This time the theme is the colour Coral and shades thereof. This is not a colour I naturally gravitate towards, but you know what?... I've loved using it. There are new shades of Frescos coming out in this palette but I didn't have time to wait for them so I just made my own by adding white to the original Coral paint. I've offset it with grey blues: Glacier Ice, Lake Wanaka and Space Cadet. Having your main colour decided for you makes the whole project much easier as I can spend ages working out what colours to use!

I should have Snowflake in here as well, but I forgot.

Glacier Ice is a beautiful grey/blue colour. I didn't want anything too strong as I wanted to paint straight over the top later.

You can create several shades of Coral just by adding different amounts of white.

Again I've gone for a pale colour and built up the background with the lovely twirly stamp.

I used a stamping platform to stamp in black ink as I wasn't sure how clearly it would stamp on the canvas and paint but I needn't have worried.

I tried, I really tried to leave that gap on the right but no, I couldn't resist adding some more stamping.

Add beads and white dots to embellish.

These stamps of JOFY's are just fantastic - lots of detail yet easy to colour with lovely shapes and patterns. Everything looks as though it's growing upwards, reaching for the sky. The twirly, whirly one can be left as is or sections painted in as I've done. Stamping directly onto the canvas creates a lovely textured look - it's also quick, you can just launch straight in!
You could make the canvas monochrome, all shades of coral, or team it up with different accent colours: pinks, purples, grey...., not sure about green, but you never know. It's always worth experimenting!
