NEW PaperArtsy Designer: Gwen Lafleur

NEW DESIGNER!!
Eclectica³ Collection {Gwen Lafleur}
September 2019 New Product Announcement

Wooo hoooo, we are absolutely thrilled to bring you a brand new stamp designer to the PaperArtsy family. The lovely, talented Gwen Lafleur. Many of you may already know of Gwen's creative talents! She has a line with Stencil Girl Products, and in January this year released some wonderful 'Boho' Embossing Powders with Emerald Creek. Actually, 'bohemian' is probably the best way to attempt to describe the vibe of Gwen's style, she seems to pull influences from vibrant cultures and pull them together into something different. Adding stamps to her existing product lines will make a totally perfect addition to her range! If you follow Gwen on her socials, you may have seen her stunning carved stamps - such fine detail that you really wonder how on earth she does it! Well, now you can have a piece of that action too with those designs reflected in these red rubber stamps. I'll hand you over to Gwen and she can explain all about it! As usual, we have been supplying our stockists with these for the past 2 weeks in readiness for tonight, so check out the links at the foot of this post, or go to our FB group PaperArtsy People to ask whose got them! ~Leandra

Hi everyone, Gwen Lafleur here. I'm super excited to share with you my very first release for PaperArtsy which includes 3 hand-drawn stamp sets.

I've been designing and carving my own stamps for years and those hand-carved designs were the inspiration behind all three of these collections. EGL01 is the one I'm calling my "Medallions" set - I love circles and medallions and you get six of my favorites here. EGL02 was dubbed the "Florals" set - I centered this one around a favorite hand-carved flower stamp and added a floral medallion, a few bits of foliage, and a leaf motif background stamp that can be repeated. (This particular design is a smaller and more detailed version of a stencil I designed for StencilGirl.) Finally, EGL03 is the one I'm calling "Motifs" and it's filled with the types of decorative elements I love to use in my work. Five of the seven stamps in this set have larger companion stencil designs from StencilGirl, so you can mix and match them for added versatility.

Today I'm sharing ideas with each of these stamps here on the blog and of course you can also see plenty of activity on PaperArtsy's Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest. (links at the foot of this post.) So no matter what your preferred social media platform, we will be sharing with you!

Let's check out these new beauties, some ideas from each set, and a project using all three.

  New Stamps
Price: RRP £18.74 +VAT
Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur Set 01 (EGL01)

For this first set, I wanted to showcase the various medallion stamps in an explosion of color and pattern, so I made a series of collage papers using lots of Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paints and water soluble pencils from Stabilo. I love to create my own collage papers to use in my work - it really allows me to put my own unique hand into my creations. Here you can see the set of collage papers before I ripped into them to make my piece.

I used my Boho Butterflies stencil from StencilGirl to get the outline of the butterflies - I love the random mix of colors and patterns on each shape. Those went on a canvas background which had been painted with Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paint (Baltic Blue, Twilight, Midnight, Peachy Keen, Caramel, and Toffee.)

The focal point features a few more of the medallions inside of some rusty bits - I love how the metal circles really set off the stamped images.

While I was at it, I also made a quick card using more of the stamped collage papers and the same Boho Butterflies stencil.

I love the simplicity of creating a quick card with just a few pre-made collage papers and a stencil. Such an easy way to get that rich, layered look without a lot of work.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur Set 02 (EGL02)

I've always loved flowers as a design motif (which only makes sense since my last name means "the flower" in French.) So of course I was thrilled to have a set of stamps that's full of flowers and foliage. I love to use lots of collage and dimensional bits in my mixed media work and it was especially fun to work in some dried flowers and twigs to echo the shapes of the stamps.

After I finished this piece I decided to use it as a template to make a quick card. I just took some scraps from my stamped backgrounds and mimicked the basic layout above.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur 03 (EGL03)

For this art journal spread, I really like the variety of motifs stamped inside the painted circles, but my favorite part is the circles torn from a sheet of collage paper I made by repeating the background stamp from the set. I love the contrast between the density from that tiny pattern and the larger motifs all around it.

Of course, I couldn't resist a quick matching card with this set as well.

It's fabulous how much impact you can have with such a quick and simple design. I also really love using the fleur-de-lys medallion stamp off the edges of the page - I think it's an effective way to add some framing, a visual triangle, and an interesting design element, all at once.

Stamped and Collaged Mixed Media Portrait

For my final project of the day, I've made a stamped and collaged mixed media portrait using all three of the sets in my new stamp collection. I love the layering of the stamped and colored image with the portrait and I've created a quick overview to show you how you can make your own version.

First I took Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paint (Waterfall, Calypso, Aqua Duck Egg, Cerulean, and Mermaid) and dry-brushed all five colors across a few pieces of 6.5" x 1.5" illustration board and let that dry completely.

Now you'll want to line up the pieces and stamp the images of your choice across them.  (You can also do this before cutting the pieces - I'd originally intended a totally different type of finished project and it made sense for that, but you can definitely do it either way.)

Next I used Inktense pencils and a waterbrush to color in several of the stamped images - I like these pencils because they dry permanent, but you can use the coloring tools or paints of your choice, or just leave the images in the original stamped color.

From there I took one of my hand-drawn portraits and printed out a copy on a piece of un-coated rice paper. I used matte medium to collage this on top of my painted and stamped surface. (You could also use a copy of a copyright-free portrait or photo, one of your own drawings, or a different type of image altogether.) Once the matte medium was dry, I cut the sections apart. (That's definitely an optional step, but I really love the way it looks to have that tiny space between each piece of the portrait.)

I mounted the stamped and collaged pieces on an antique film cartridge and then used the background stamps from EGL02 and EGL03 to add a bit of pattern to the wood frame. I just used some beads and wire on top and a found metal piece on the bottom for a bit of decorative accent, but otherwise left it alone to let the portrait shine.

I love the way the rice paper from the portrait disappeared and let the paint and stamped images show through and blend with it so that you can't really tell which is on top. I now think I want to take a few more of my portraits and turn this into a series!

That's it for me today - I'm so excited about this new collection of stamps and have really enjoyed being able to add them into my mixed media pieces, collage papers, art journals, and am quite enthused about the possibilities that I haven't tried yet. I hope that you love them as well, and I can't wait to see how you use them in your own projects.
