2015 #11: Messages in Silk and Stone {by Penny Nuttall}

2015 Topic 11: Hidden Objects

Hi everyone Penny here again, joining you this evening with a post about putting stamped images onto fabric....directly and that I could hide a secret message in a mini drawstring bag. For this I chose to use one of the latest stamp sets by Elizabeth Borer, EEB05, which gave me lots of small elements to play with.

I started by making a felt bag, a simple rectangle folded short edges together and stitched both sides. I turned it through and punched holes at intervals round the top for the ribbons.

Love felt, no fraying! Stamping a fine image on felt is difficult so used the indirect method.

I fused a piece of tissue paper to one side of a piece of fusible web, and stamped a corner image onto the paper, then coloured it with Fresco Finish Acrylic Paints.

Next the direct stamping. I love silk and it will take careful stamping with Archival Ink. I stamped and cut out several of the poppy flower heads.

Having cut out the corner flourish and ironed it onto the bag, I stitched on the crumply petals and added beads in the centre.

For the treasure messages to hide inside...... sorry pebbles again! Silk and stone.....what's not to like?

I painted the tops of the pebbles with Fresco Paints, and applied the stamped and painted (from the back this time) tissue paper images with matte medium.

 The paper goes translucent to let the colour through and the ink lines stay sharp.

I took some words from a JOFY set (JOFY11)...

to make my message, to hide away for someone to find.

Why not make your own hidden message pebbles for a gift or a greeting, and enter the PaperArtsy Blog challenge.

Bye for now, Penny.

What a lovely project, Penny. I am currently making small gifts for my fellow chemo-ites on the treatment unit, and something like this would go down a treat, I know! I am sure the little bags with the pebbles in them are really tactile too, and fun just to play with, and spelling out the words of the messages would be such fun to do. Can I borrow this idea please? It's so cool!
