2021 Topic 3 The Creative Laboratory with Zinski Art {by Tracey Springer}

 2021 Topic 3: The Creative Laboratory with Zinski Art {by Tracey Springer}

This topic has certainly had our bloggers scratching their heads. Tracey went down the quirky zini critter route with specimen jars for her laboratory shelfie! Along the way she went in a few twists and turns, like most research does, and landed back on the turf she feels most comfortable with - bold, bright and striking!
~ Leandra

Hi Everyone, it's Tracey Springer with you today. Creative Laboratory wasn't one I was going to do (hence I'm not using any of the gorgeous new releases) but I'm very glad I did I jumped in to share some Zinski fun with some of those older stamps that you know and love. I hope you enjoy my crazy cards as much as I do!

I started out with a vision of putting some of Elena Zinki’s crazy little Zini critters under bell jars – almost like they were precious specimens on display in a museum.

I used a bell jar die cut from the Sizzix 'bigz' Bell Jar die and cut out the acetate tops to be able to figure out what I could fit under the jar. Zini’s turned out to be the perfect size. I selected numbers 15, 32, and 38 to play with.

I coloured them in using Copics and fussy cut them out (I must admit Birdie lost a leg and at one stage I was very tempted to leave him like that to see if anyone noticed).

The next step was to play with my infusions to back the jars with to make the Zini’s standout. I love how each play with the infusions creates something different depending on how much you spray.

I added an outline around the acetate jars with a layer of ‘Fresco Frosting Glaze’ (designed to crated an effect on acetate, acrylic or glass that replicates sandblasted glass) and a small stamp on one edge using the line stamp in Tracy Scott 041 TS041

I assembled them with a layer of foam tape raising the Zini up but taping down the edges of the jars – it gave it quite a bubble 3D effect.

My trusty vintage ‘Hermes Baby’ typewriter was used for the specimen labels and quotes.

I then overthought the process for the next week – I tried to do styles that aren’t ‘Me’ creatively anymore. I hand-dyed muslin cloth using watered down Fresco paints – they turned out really nice but they didn’t work together like I wanted them to. I threw out sample after sample until I finally decided to actually do ‘Me’.

I got out black cardstock and the very cool set of background stamps ETS 41 by Tracy Scott, stamped and heat embossed in white and it instantly made my jars stand out. Yay!

I stuck to bold, bright and simple for the rest of the cards – painting my favourite ‘Fresco Finish’ colours – ‘Yellow Submarine, Bubble-gum, Coral and Sargasso’ onto card stock and stamping the large wording from ‘JOFY 89’ (my all-time favourite background stamp) and the scallop border stamp from ‘JOFY 79’. I distressed around the edges of the coloured backgrounds with my scissors (I do have a tool but I can’t find it) and assembled. A simple piece of knotted bakers twine finished them off.

I hope you enjoyed my play, the creative process certainly taught me a few things this time – I learnt that its ok to do ‘Me’ and to just roll with it.

Happy creating,
Tracey XO

2019 #9 Arty Wood Blocks: Monster Mash with Zinis {by Chris Dark}

2019 Topic 9: Arty Wood Blocks

Chris brings these new lovelies our to play in a wonderful project which includes them all, of course, they are up to their tricks, as you would expect of any cheeky Zini! THe expression Elena brings to each face is absolute gold! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Chris Dark with you today, and I'd like to share my project for this lovely new topic of arty wood blocks.

These are a lot of fun to create and there are so many ways to customise them! I didn't have any suitable fixings to embellish my block, I think they look better if they have legs of some kind and something on top to finish it so I popped in to the local DIY store. I bought some inexpensive small plastic door knobs, I used one for the top simply glued on with PVA. I also found some little plastic spacer fixings which made great feet, it's surprising what will work and cost very little.

As soon as I saw Elena's fantastic new collection of Zini's (stockists list at the foot of the post here), I thought of Dr. Seuss; green Eggs and ham, the cat in the hat, the Grinch etc., so I knew I would be using bright colours and straight away colour blocked my ATC sized Wood Block with Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics.

I painted each side of the wood block with a different bright colour after first giving it an all over coat of Snowflake. I worked with SlimedBananaChinaCherry RedBeach Hut, Midnight,  and Bubble Gum. The China isn't visible as it's on the bottom of the blockin theory I could have left it white but at that point I wasn't sure which side would be at the top. I stamped in a similar colour of ink over the top for a tone on tone effect.using the monster sayings stamp set ZA12, I'm fond of the sentiment 'whatever it is I didn't do it' which reminds me of my boys when they were little, apparently Mr. Nobody was the culprit when any naughty stuff happened in our house :D!

Here is my favourite! Love those goofy teeth and big eyes and he looks as if he's about to jump up! He is stamped onto Smoothy Card then coloured with Inktense and coloured pencils. I knew straight off that he would be swinging in the air above the block suspended on a strip of acetate.

It fitted that this little chap on the left would be looking up at the elevated character, he's my second favourite!

I love all the expressions, Elena is the master of giving her characters personality! This chap is just taking it all in his stride!

This is the opposite side of the block and we have the adoring couple looking at each other.

Suspended above, the cat is looking unamused or may be he knows he's about to take a tumble!!

I had some chipboard hearts in my stash which I painted and then covered in glitter glue. This chap is just smiling at it all going on :D.

May be she's reaching up to catch the cat above!  I added dots of paint around all the edges, it seems to be my answer when something doesn't feel quite finished.

I had to think about how I photographed as I took my pictures outside and there was a lot of reflection on the acetate strips so I bent the acetate and character down behind the block, photographed it then turned it round to the other side and repeated the process.

It's always happiness working with Elena's images, these new Zini's are just lovely and I wonder which are your favourites?

I hope you'll join in with us this fortnight and create your own arty wood blocks, there are so many ways you can go with them as you'll see from all the projects to come.

Thanks for joining me today and I hope you have a creative week!

Chris x

Hi everyone, Elena here of ZinskiArt.

I'm really happy to share with you my newest release for PaperArtsy. There are 8 Zini's for you this time around

It's no secret that i love creating little characters made up in my Zinski head and many of them evolve from simply doodling. I like the idea of extra individual Zini's which will always go with the sets and other Zini's alike. These are always handy to have to make a quick card or add extra characters to your journals and even planners. You're always in for a treat when Lauren Hatwell gets her hands on these little critters, I think you'll agree she thinks outside the box, inside the box and all around the box haha

Today and Tomorrow you will see ideas with these stamps from Lauren. You can also see plenty of activity on PaperArtsy's Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest. (links at the foot of this post) So no matter what your preferred social media platform, we will be sharing with you!

  New Stamps
Price: RRP £2.00 +VAT
Size: approx credit card size
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

I do Like to be Beside the Seaside (ZN33 and ZN35)

I love these two bathing kitties. It struck me that the girl cat looked like she could be swimming or waving and as they are both wearing their bathers I thought a trip to the beach might be in order. As ever, Elena has caught their expressions perfectly. I love the fact their legs look like flowers in pots if you turn the images upside down too. Purrfect!

Love You So Mulch (ZN34)

Carmen Miranda eat your heart out! LOL! I love how the quirky touches on this fun image leave loads of room for customising. Hand drawn images are fantastic for adding your own little details and doodles. See how I used the legs of her shorts to make flower pots too!

Make a Wish! (ZN36)

This little guy reminds me of a character from The Beano or Whizzer and Chips! I think he looks like a magician or a wizard! I love his oversized hat AND the fact his body looks like a light bulb...

Believe! (ZN37)

Her expression is priceless! She is filled with magic; or love; or power; or anything else you can think of. I LOVE HER! Have you noticed that her eyeballs would look like fish if you added a tail? Just a thought.... The stars are a forgotten treasure from one of Elena's earliest sets. I love the way you can pull elements from any of Elena's stamp sets and they all chime beautifully...
Happy You Day! (ZN38)

OMG! How gorgeous is this little lizard? I am in love with him. He could be jumping in the air; or sunbathing; or photo-bombing; or turning cartwheels. He is already a firm favourite and, as you can see, he can be any colour you like...

Compost Happens! (ZN39)

I couldn't resist adding a couple of JoFY bees to this card and they certainly look quite happy buzzing away there don't they. This little mole character is so versatile. I can think of at least 5 different ways to use him and I LOVE that amazing hat!

I Didn't Do It! (ZN40)

Oh bless him! He looks SO worried! He would be lovely for "sorry" cards. Just look at the gorgeous face! I must say it's great to be able to use some of the those fab Zinski sentiments for these characters again too! They are just perfect!

Project One: Holiday Fund Money Box

Intro: I've made a little money box out of grey board. I used a pack of 6x6 greyboard and a few offcuts for the base and sides. One pack of greyboard will make one moneybox.

First I cut all the pieces to size and die cut a slot for the top of the box and lay out all the pieces before I paint the background so that everything flows well around the box. I always washi tape them together at the back to make sure they don't move.

Next I stamped all the characters in place and painted them. For this is remove the Washi Tape and used my stamp platform to stamp back over after painting. I like to add a few swipes of white paint pen just to make it all look a bit more painterly; almost like I just drew everything on the spur of the moment.

And finally assemble the box using a strong contact adhesive (I used No More Nails as it's quite tacky and holds everything together nicely so you can assemble as you go).

As you can see, I made it double sided so it looks good all the way around.

A quick word about the base. Obviously you can just stick your moneybox straight to a base but I decided I wanted a removable base in which case all you do is make a liner for the box with a few more off-cuts of board. Just cut the pieces a bit smaller so that the box sits on top snugly.

Thanks Lauren, fabulous as always, you never cease to make my face do this :) and thank you everyone for joining us here, I hope you enjoy these little peeps as much as i love creating them. Love Elena x
