2019 #15 Coral: Vintage Botanical Tea with Scrapcosy Stamps {by Raquel Burillo}

2019 Topic 15: Coral

Some infusions magic for you in this post, but in true Raquel-style, she also has paints, inks, and many techniques for you to contemplate. This is a bright spread for her, and it seems many of these colours are outside her usual comfort zone, so what about you, will you turn your hand to a new shade of coral ?? you know you want to!!! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Raquel (scrapcosywith you today, and I'd like to share with you this art journal spread inspired by my tea set collection and the coral colour. I used very simple techniques, not many steps, but the result is a vintage tea garden full of details achieved with minimal art supplies (in terms of colour), but lots of stamps... I couldn't help but use my entire tea stamp set collection!

As you may know, I love to add colour with infusions, so these will be the main supplies I used, but not the only ones. I wanted to add a touch of paint as well, so I couldn't resist to use one of the new colours recently released which perfectly matches with my colour palette. Can you find out which one it is? Let's see first the result and then I'll give you more details and a video with all the steps as well.

Since the topic was coral, it was only natural that I would explore the 24 colours of infusions and I would select the one which resembled more the living coral (Pantone colour of the year 2019). I may be wrong, but my selected colour was Orange County, a colour that to be honest, I had never used before, since among the shortlist were 2 of my all time favourites Rusty Car and Sunset Beach. But this time I decided to set those to one side. Terracotta was also very promising, I'll come back to that one in the future too. And to add some contrast I went and chose again a colour that it's not in my preferred list at all, but I know in Spain this colour is killing it! Is a Bit Jaded  a favourite of yours as well maybe?

And since I love metallics, I thought that WOW embossing powder in gold (Metallic Gold Rich Pale - superfine detail) would be a nice touch to add here and there. So this became my basic palette.

In addition to Infusions I also used these 2 paints: Chalk Fresco Acrylic Paint and the new Cayenne (available ONLY from approved PaperArtsy stockists - see here), which perfectly matches Orange County.

I selected all these stamps ESC13, ESC14, ESC15 and ESC16. I was particularly interested in all flowers, laces, cups and postage stamps from the collection, as you will see.

And I selected the stencil PS105 as well

Let's talk about the background first.

First layer is Chalk Fresco Acrylic Paint, added to cover the book pages, but
still leave a hint of the letters visible behind.

The next layer is sprinkles of Orange County Infusions spritzed with water. If you see, the edges of the page (porous surface, since I added less paint at the edges) have richer infusions colour and more spots than the rest of the page (which is less porous due to the paint layer).

Next, using the Tea cloud stamp from ESC16 "inked up" with leftovers of wet infusions from my craft-sheet, I stamped all over the page. In this case it's a very subtle result which can be only seen on the lower-left of the picture below. Depending on the amount of water and infusions you use (how wet the stamp is and how much colour there is on it) you'll get
different results.

Then, using a brush to get more dirty water from my craft-sheet I did some splashes. Please note, if there is no leftover of dirty gorgeous infused water on your craft-sheet at any of the 2 previous steps above, just create a puddle to splash with on purpose!

And once all Infusions layers are done, we go back to the paint and use Cayenne, which sits underneath the 3 clusters I created for the spread. I just used a stencil brush to apply it before I stuck anything on the page.

My next step was stamping all the flowers, lace, cups and postage stamps from my tea stamp sets below on Smoothy Card stock using VersaFine Clair Pine cone ink (waterproof ink). Then I water-coloured the images with Infusions Orange County, and a Bit Jaded. Once all was dry fussy cut the lot. Gosh! Cutting all that took me AGES!! I also stamped (same ink) and embossed with WOW Embossing Powder some elements in vellum and in regular smoothy.

At this point all those little pieces are nice and flat and clean. If you ask me, they are too flat and too clean for me, so now it's when I add my vintage touch with regular distress ink (Tea dye, another new for me) and some well needed volume using my fingers and nails and the back of some brushes.

Here you can (hopefully) see an example of the 3D added to the little flower in ESC14 (I bet many people missed that this flower exists on that set !! There are 11 individual elements in ESC14... yes, 11! And Leandra and her elves must hate me for including all those pieces that they have to cut when they produce their stamps... (sorry guys!!) I bet now many of you will go up the post and have a second look at the picture of the stamp set :P)

Once all is ready, it's time to play to get the pieces to their final spots, but of course, I don't have a design for the spread 100% clear in my mind, I just had a rough idea of having a sentiment on the left page (Keep Calm and drink tea) surrounded by some elements and then having the bottom right corner full of detail and climbing up and left the spread. I also wanted to preserve some "white space" areas. So you can see the original first arrangement and how, after many hours and few days later, it actually ended up.

After all those hours spent arranging and re-arranging I felt like a florist moving all the flowers and cups and butterflies until I found the perfect arrangement - at least from my point of view. And also had in mind that I didn't want to cut more pieces (enough scissors for a while!), so I had to almost do magic with just 3 stamped tea plants of ESC16 to get all those green leaves into my composition. I may have chopped one of those plants in 4 parts or more...

The little paper pieces were moving so much (they are slippery!) while arranging them that I built up each cluster using sellotape on the back of the elements, adding one thing after the other, to keep them in place. So basically formed three clusters. Here is the title one. I originally wanted to stamp on the page but somehow I thought it may look too boring so I decided to highlight it somehow. It kind of ended up in a cross shape with all little bits and pieces of lace and some leftover flowers stamps and a butterfly.

Here is the left corner cluster. I love the postage stamp cloud in ESC15. It's a fantastic piece to create your own ephemera. And all the tea words around it can be used for different purposes as you'll see in the different clusters (they've become a lace, see title above, a word below and part of a label, three pictures below)

And the huge cluster. Here is the top part of it where I left some butterflies flying around.

And the bottom part, maybe one of my favourite sections of the spread, with that label in vellum and all the tiny leaves arranged with the postage stamps and the laces.

I glued everything mainly with mod-podge and I gave both pages a layer of it on top which then allowed me to work with distress crayons for the first time... I used the Vintage Photo one. I also used the Vintage Photo distress ink, so between the 2 supplies I managed to get some shadowing around the elements in the page.

I also used some foam adhesive to create 3D effect in the butterflies as well as in the cups. Check the result in the picture below. By the way, when I designed this tea collection of stamps I had in mind that I wanted to create a pile of cups and I love I finally decided to give it a go and how this tower of cups turned out, with spoons coming out from different directions.

Just a final picture from me, showing more 3D goodness which I love.

And if you want to see more, here is the link to the video.

I really had fun creating this spread. It was a hard work with scissors and a harder work to decide the final arrangement but I'm very pleased with the result and I can't wait to do more fussy cutting in the future. I love how collaging all bits and pieces give you the flexibility to not commit to a final stamped image on the page and let you play freely with your design until you're 100% convinced. I specially loved to chop and re-purpose different parts of a stamped image (like the tea plant or some of the laces) and see what they become in the final design. There is no right or wrong on how you arrange the items in the collage, so as long as you enjoy the playfulness of it, it's worth to spend the time.

That was all for today, thanks so much for spending your time in this maybe-too-long post, but I've been out for a while with my baby and all, and I may have come back too energetic on my typing and my sharing of pictures... I hope I didn't get you bored too much, hehe. See you around! And until the next one!

NEW PaperArtsy Products {Scrapcosy} July 2018

NEW PAPERARTSY PRODUCTS
July 2018
Eclectica³ Collection: Scrapcosy by Raquel Burillo

Raquel is back, and boy has she worked her socks off to create these amazing stamps and stencils. Each hand drawn to perfection, we both laboured over working, and reworking the designs until we felt they offered all kinds of creative options. Raquel does like a Vintage inspired theme, and this one is 'Tea Time'. Grab a cup of tea, relax, and let us usher you through a wealth of ideas from Raquel.

First up she does love to share techniques with you, and Raquel has prepared 2 videos! (You may want to read the rest of the post, then come back to see these.) The first one one involves a large new collage stamp she drew, Violetta infusions and Grunge Paste the sample above. And below is the same sample with a bit of additional stamping and layering to finish.

And here's the first video...

In the second video, you will see Raquel create a journalling page layout, using paints, infusions, in a beautiful soft manner, with a great rust technique too!! She comes up with so many interesting ideas! Enjoy!

I'll hand over to Raquel to share a wide range of ideas with her 8 new products...
~Leandra
Hi everyone, Raquel here from scrapcosy

Today it's a very special day for me because I feel I'm sharing with you the collection of stamps that has always been in my mind to create: 100% tea related! ESC03 and PS051 were already a hint (tea import / map related). You can tell tea has a place in my heart when you read my blog header ends like “… all accompanied by a cup of tea”. I can’t picture a better crafting time than spending it with stamps, inks, tools, inspiration and a cup of tea.

I can say I collect stamps but I think I can also say I collect tea-related things. I don’t have more vintage teacups and teapots because we don’t have enough space at home, so now I only allow myself to collect teas. I may have 75+ varieties of tea and, as it happens with crafting tools and inks, although you have many, you end up most of the time using the top favourites. In the crafting world, I always end up with Infusions or distress inks and in the tea world, I end up with a variety of earl grey among my top favourite 3 teas.

After reading Marie Kondo books, I knew I had to get rid of some teas and only keep those that I love and that spark joy on me, so I decided that instead of keeping them in labeled boxes and unattended for so long, I would do a final taste on them and decide whether I keep them or not. And I would do something special for that process: I would do a Tea Journal! Or you can call it an Art Journal about tea. And I would go through each tea, brew a teapot for me to drink it, smell it, do some journaling about it (where I got it, what was special, maybe I even have a picture that reminds me about it), use the tea itself to colour my pages, to add texture, save a couple of doses in the Journal (for a future re-taste) and then decide if I let it go or if I keep it. It will obviously take me ages (unless I did one per day, which I don’t think will be the case), but I think I will enjoy the journey a lot, even if it becomes a never-ending task…

So for this quest I needed tea stamps. Since I have a nice collection of teapots and tea cups I thought that it would be great to draw them so we can all enjoy them somehow. This is a picture of the real china elements I have turned into stamps now. These have become plain cups and teapots stamps, so you can add or doodle the pattern of your choice if you don’t want them so simple (although I like them simple, to be honest):

So now let's see all the products and few samples I've created with them!

  New Stamps

Price: RRP £17.08 +VAT
Size: 5" x 6.5" (13cm x 16.5cm)
All stamps are trimmed onto cling foam, and are presented in a clear bag with a laminated storage/ index sheet

Eclectica³ Scrapcosy Set 13 (ESC13)

With this stamp set, you have already seen the teapot sample in the video.  Above is another with oxide inks, stamped and layered.

It's nice how the various collage elements can be made 3 dimensional.

I also used the tea mug collage to create one of the six coasters (more pictures at the end of the post). I really had fun just colouring the images. Keep an eye out for the lace of the stamp set which I haven't used yet. I'll show you later what I did with it.

Eclectica³ Scrapcosy Set 14 (ESC14)

Here I created a scene with the different elements of the tea set, although I also added some elements of other sets you'll see below. I wanted a soft finish so I went for infusions with water, to watercolour my images that were stamped using Versafine Smokey Gray. This type of ink is perfect for such detailed images. These stamps are VERY detailed.

Because we tend to think of fine bone China as white, it makes sense to stamp a teapot in grey ink. Shading in grey also can add shadows quite easily, like my original china.

The next sample is with 2 different oxide ink backgrounds. The lower level piece of card is over-stamped by the 'teas' script. The contrast of pink on green in pretty, but the grunge of the oxides still is cute with the Vintage Tea Part vibe. A simple construction but effective.

Eclectica³ Scrapcosy Set 15 (ESC15)

I'm a postage stamp collector (for crafting purposes only), and I always feel sorry to use my  postage stamps on projects, so as part of this set I decided to crate a collage that as you can see it's nice as stamped by itself...

The stamps could be used individually, or even layered individually, if you prefer. As above and below

...but it also nice to stamp as many as you need and create your own ephemera. Never run out of postage stamps again!

I used here the cup-collage and added some volume by stamping again, cutting some of the flowers and sticking them back in place (paper piercing).

I also added more volume and shine with glossy accents on some parts of the collage. It makes sense to do that one a white china teacup right?!

Eclectica³ Scrapcosy Set 16 (ESC16)

On some stamp sets I created collages for you, but with this one I give you individual images and elements so you can create your own collage as I did here with the laces, the cup and the spoon.

I also enjoyed fussy cutting that tea plant and divided it in 2 to decorate the 2 opposite corners of this postcard. Embossing on vellum was something I've been wanting to try for so long! I did it here by stamping but also by stencilling (PS106 below)

New Stencils

Price: RRP £4.60 +VAT
Size: Regular 6.5" x 7" (16cm x 18cm)

Stencil title (PS105)

I really enjoy adding a crackle touch to some projects but sometimes crackle textures or crackle mediums take time to dry and to actually crackle. With this stencil, you just need to apply grunge paste and heat set for a white crackle, or even better, if you want it as in above, you just need to apply versamark ink through the stencil and some clear embossing powder (I used UTE) and you will get a resist once all is heat set. Then colour the cracks that are not protected with a dark ink or paint and voila!

Here I applied Grunge Paste through the stencil on the tea word-cloud and I rubbed on some Delicata Brown ink (it's a pity you can't see the shine of the brown metallic from this angle) and a touch of dry brushed paint on top for yet more contrast. These words re going to be super-useful with texture!

Stencil title (PS106)

Of course it is so easy to apply ink through a stencil for a soft background effect like this one with Oxide inks

I love creating stencils that you can repeat over and over by repositioning them. And this one has a baroque like touch that reminds me of a vintage wallpaper. In this sample I used the stencil with Grunge Paste to create the background of the tag and to add that lace at the bottom. I used as well the new Fresco paints by Courtney Franich (Mulled wine, Blah Mange, Seaglass and Vintage lace) to create that monoprinting base and to paint my cups and the lace. You can see a sneak peek of PS108 as well on the top left background.

Stencil title (PS107)

Here I used the bump technique with the big floral stencil to decorate a corner of my art journal page.

Stencil title (PS108)

This stencil again can be repeated over and over to create bigger backgrounds, as I did in 3 of these 6 coasters I created. These are the reverse sides, all stencilled using ink on top of a background that was previously painted with the new Fresco Paints by Courtney Franich (I used Seaglass, Vintage Lace and Eggshell) and I coated all with UTEE and with a sprinkle of Vintage Beeswax Baked Texture Powders by Seth Apter / Emerald's creek.

And finally, of course, the stencil also looks amazing with paper and oxide inks and plenty of water, this effect is so pretty too!

Now I'll show you other samples that I would like to share with you as well. I hope you like them!

Project One: Coasters

I decided to create 6 coasters by stamping on the front and colouring images with infusions and satin glaze. My base is grey card stock

This is one of my favourites :)

And I stencilled the backs as you've seen before. I really like these, so simple but so striking.

Project Two: Tea Sheet

For my tea journal, which is still in progress, I decided to start with a Rooibos tea and I created like an index sheet that I coloured only with the Rooibos tea I was sipping at the time (one cup for me, one cup for my page)

I also added the tea itself (dry) in the spoon and attached it with glue (I used Mod Podge but any gel medium will work as well). I loved that after cutting the spoon, you can bend it and shape it, so it seems really 3 Dimensional !

And as you've seen before, I added some crackle with PS105 and some UTEE. I love the effect.

Project Three: Laces

I decided to create a sample with all the laces from all the sets and stamp the Keep Calm quote in the middle, which I double embossed in silver. I used the new paints by Courtney mixed with satin glaze to add colour on the laces, but for some of the laces I added too much paint and too little glaze, so they became too opaque. Still the effect is soft and subtle. What do you think? Do you like it? Its an easy background!

I enjoyed a lot playing with my new stamps. I know I'm not supposed to pick a favourite, but this release has made it to my top! I can see I will use it A LOT! You don't know how many other things I've done already. And I couldn't share them yet because it was a secret! Aaargh! But today, doors are open and these babies can finally see the world! Sharing time!!

Thanks for enjoying this release with me. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below, I would love to read them! And if you create things with them, tag me, I would love to see your projects! :)

PS Don't forget to go back and look at the Videos at the top of the post!
