NEW PaperArtsy Products: Mattints & Just Walnut {November/December 2023}

A note from Leandra:

WE'RE SO EXCITED ...... we have been cooking up these products for so long, and choosing when to release was not easy! If you saw Raquel' and Alison's lives earlier this week, they both shared details on these new products: Mattints and Just Walnut.

Dounia and I decided it made sense to create a dedicated post to this new line for you future reference, so pin this post as you will want to refer back to it I am sure!

We asked Mags Woodcock to do some samples for us, so those are also here so you get some fresh ideas, and Dounia has also made some reference content so you really get a sense of the Mattints and their versatility

Look, let's cut to the chase and explain this NEW LINE of wonderfulness!!

A completely new PaperArtsy product to broaden your creative horizons!

Mattints are a TINTED MATTE GLAZE and GLUE. This means that are highly transparent yet dry with a matte finish, so a no-shine see-though layer. The tints are buildable and extremely versatile.

Mattints have been designed as a companion product to Infusions, Just Walnut and Printed Tissue, and they will also partner beautifully with all your Fresco Chalk paints.

We are launching this new products with 4 beautiful and slightly vintage tints: Shark, Glow, Fern, and Nutty. All are available exclusively from PaperArtsy Stockists now.

As the name suggests, these are not paints but matte-tints. They have the same characteristics and qualities as the Fresco Finishes but are completely transparent! What lies below the Mattints will be seen perfectly, albeit through a subtle tint!

They can be mixed and layered and the colour will strengthen with each layer. Here are a few ideas of what you can do with them. This is absolutely not a exhaustive list and we expect you to come up with even more   ways to use them!

Below are some samplers of the 4 colours and how the tints look on different surfaces and textures
Shark

Glow

Fern

Nutty

Let's look a bit closer at these techniques so get get a better understanding of this product...

Glue
Liquid and fast drying, UV safe and acid free, matte ie no shine finish. The Mattints are perfect to glue light weight layers and objects while also adding colour. Now a glue 'spill' is artistic!

Layer and Seal
The Mattints are fabulous over any Fresco paint to add depth and oomph. Many other glazing techniques are also achievable. They can be used to seal paint and other surfaces to make them non porous and add a soft hint of colour. Perfect with our fun Printed Tissues!

Colour
Completely transparent, the Mattints are perfect to add gentle colour to stamped images, add shades and shadow or tint other pictures. They can of course be mixed together to create new shades!

Mix
Absolutely compatible with the Fresco Finish and other acrylic paints. Mattints can be mixed into any existing colours. They will not just tint your paint but also make the paint more translucent. You have just multiplied the number of paint colours you own, and have the ability to edit the colours slightly!

Age
As their colour intensifies with layering, the Mattints are perfect to fill and reveal nooks and crannies, like embossed paper or textured Grunge Paste.

Bind
Water-based, the Mattints are a great partner for water-reactive media. They can activate water colour pencil or dye inks for example, while creating a sealed result that will resist water. They compliment infusions perfectly, use the Mattint to activate the powder and create new shades!

Exploring Surfaces
PaperArtsy Smooooothy paper is an Italian high quality card stock designed to received ink. This means you will get the best impression possible when using stamps and inks on this card stock.

We find it also it is fabulous for wet media like paint, infusions, so it made sense to us that it would allow Mattints to perform beautifully. Let's compare it to other options. Sketching paper and tissue paper do not reveal the vibrance of the tint like smoothy, and the layers on smoothy are also very obvious

On vintage papers the porosity makes a difference pulling the tint into the paper resulting in softer colour impact. If a paper already has a sepia tone due to its ages, this too can impact on the final colour.

It is good to be aware of how the decision regarding which type of paper you choose to work with could affect the final Mattint impact.

Another head's up ... Slimed is available again (Woop Woop)! We think it’s better than the original more slimey - but you decide!

Plus … another new thing…. we have added ‘Just Walnut’ to the line up. In other words just walnut crystals that can be mixed with water, glaze, sprayed, sloshed, sprinkled, dripped onto papers, or any project onto which you might want to add a vintage sepia effect.

And while we are talking about colour products in the PaperArtsy range, do you know about our extensive paint range?

Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paints

We will squeeze a quick reminder of the features of Fresco CHALK acrylic paints, there are always new people coming to check out the range, so here is a summary of how these paints differ from Mattints and the features we love the most about them

As the name suggest, these are acrylic craft paints with a very matte and smooth chalky finish: chalk (yes the real deal - its not lip-service), acrylic, very matte. Many are opaque, but we have some with low opacity too

They are user-friendly, with lots of great features for crafters:
  • They dry fast (no need for a heat tool)
  • They work for both indoor and outdoor projects (UV safe)
  • They are multi surface: they will stay on most substrates without the need for a primer or gesso. Think of them as hundreds of shades of gesso!
  • The chalky finish makes it easy to stamp on and to work with wet media on top (inks, pigment pens, watercolours, markers).
  • Their opacity varies depending on the colour. Generally bright colours are more translucent than pale or muted shades which will have high opacity.
  • Sandable - as they are chalk (not plastic), you can of course sand them. Perhaps you have created textured brayered layers, and you want to stamp a fine detail image on top. Sand the dry layers with our sanding block, check the surface is baby-bottom smooth (it will be) ink and stamp - perfection!
  • Colour mix - see the side bar in the blog for links to our key colour theory blog posts, and you will have a much better understanding of how to mix colours to create even more options, personalise the range to your preference

There are 3 paint collections; 2 designer lead, and one 'in house' core line:
  • Seth Apter has 32 colours, often muted and grungy
  • Tracy Scott also has 32 colours but bright and zingy
  • The PaperArtsy Core line boasts 22 colour families of 6 (thats 132), with a range from dark to light in each family, like the picture above.
  • The extras: 4 metallics paints, 7 glazes and a Drying Retarder (handy for gel printing).
That makes 196 colours and 12 'others'. To check them all out, visit this Fresco Finish masterpost. We think you should be able to find the ones that speak to you...

Let's hand over this post to Mags Woodcock who has so much to share with you today, we know how much you love some eye candy!

Hi everyone, Mags here

I'm super excited to share with you my newest makes for PaperArtsy. I love all the new products ,the possibilities are endless.

Price: RRP €5.26 + VAT
50ml bottle

Firstly I've been playing with the 'Just Walnut' ink crystals and they are totally up my street, fabulous for creating vintage vibes.

The first project I want to share is a vintage inspired panel which I plan to frame. It combines the Just Walnut Crystals with cotton rag paper, a match made in heaven. Once the crystals were spritzed with water I left them to dry. Adding some of the new Printed tissue by Scrapcosy to the panel with matte medium. Some rusty wire and a vintage clock face framed the Tim Holtz Photo Booth picture perfectly.

I particularly love how the walnut ink pools and highlights the texture of the cotton rag paper.

The new printed tissue by Scrapcosy (PT05) is fabulous combined with the walnut ink, creating a lovely vintage feel.

The next project I'm sharing is a book-box project, again combining the Just Walnut ink crystals with the new tissue. I wanted the project to tell the story of a couple traveling around the world. So the large map from the printed tissue was ideal. I also aged some Tim Holtz ephemera by spraying them with diluted Just walnut crystals.

As Leandra has already mentioned, the strength of colour can be varied by the ratio of crystals to water in the spray bottle. I mixed mine in a small jar first to make sure there were no undissolved crystals that might block the tube in the spray bottle.
I sprayed more heavily in some areas, which gave a more authentic aged effect.

I left the ink to dry naturally, I like the effect it gives.

The final project using Just walnut is a set of notecards. As you probably know, I love to doodle and find it very therapeutic . Using watercolour card as a base, I sprinkled some crystals onto the card and then spritzed with clean water. Once the card was completely dry it was easy to imagine flower shapes in the resulting inky marks. (If you are uneasy about doodling your flowers, just use a stamp) I used a black fine liner and doodled several designs.

With a little practise it's easy to imagine and then draw the flowers

I tend to position the flower centres over the more intense areas of ink

  New PaperArtsy Mattints
Price: RRP €5.26 +VAT
Size:50mL

Glow (MT01)

Nutty (MT02)

Fern (MT03)

Shark (MT04)

It was now time to play with the new MattintsI created a nature inspired canvas using the new Scrapcosy tissue (PT05) and Fern Mattint as an adhesive.

As you can see, the tissue and Mattint glaze layers wonderfully over card inked with Just walnut, allowing the vintage feel to continue.

The printed tissue is perfect to combine with both the Just Walnut and the Mattints, I can see myself creating many more projects in the future with all three.

I hope you have as much fun playing with these fab products as I had. Don't forget to share your makes in the PaperArtsy People Facebook group.

Have fun and happy crafting
