2020 #12 Embrace The Detours with Everything Art stamps {by Corrie Herriman}

2020 Topic 12: Typography

Ever thought of using your gel plate as a stamp? Corrie has some great ideas making the most of our typography theme in different ways on her beautiful art journal spread. Her use Grunge Paste through a stencil has such great impact too.
~ Keren

Hi everyone, it's Corrie with you today, and I'd like to share my art journal spread with you that I made for the Typography topic. I love using letters and numbers in all my work and I also love art journaling so this project was a delight to make.

I also used my favourite journal which is a Moleskine Sketchbook and lots of my favourite techniques, colours and materials.

I did struggle with the focal point but in the end I chose this dapper chap from one of the Tim Holtz sets of Found Relatives. I added a piece of book text and some staples and a black mat to make him stand out more. I also stamped onto the white spaces of the photo to make it more in keeping with the rest of the spread. So here is the how I made this project:

I love my gelli plates and this little one hadn't been used for a long time, so that is what I settled on. It is approx 9" x 4" and I put it onto a stamping block so I could use it almost as a stamp. I used PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics {Mermaid} and {Bora Bora} for the first two layers.

This is the first layer. I just rolled some paint onto the little plate with a brayer and printed it in my book repeatedly until the pages were covered. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the second layer but you can see some of it in the picture below.

The second layer was added much the same as the first albeit not over the whole two pages. Again I brayered the paint, put mini mask {PM007} onto the wet paint, brayered over again to take some of the paint off and then printed.  You can see the pattern on the top of the right page and the middle of the left. I also added the first 'typography' which was some pieces from old books.

Next, I used stencil {PS021} and some {Grunge Paste} to add more interest and more 'typography'; in this case numbers.

The next thing was some more paint, I added green to the edges, I really love the blues and greens together. In this case I used PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics in {Teresa Green} and {Granny Smith}. To tone it down a little I used my brayer again and rolled over the pages with white {Snowflake}.

Because I lost most of the pattern of the stencil {PM007} I used in the beginning I added some more with a piece of foam and PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic {Snowflake}. Now I was ready to add my third and final colour.

And my last colour was pink today. I also finally added some stamping! I used three of the Everything Art Stamp sets for my background stamping : {EEA03}, {EEA04} and {EEA05}. I used whatever inks I had in the right colours (Distress Oxide, Versafine Clair and Archival.)

To finish my spread off I added Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic in {Little Black Dress} with a palette knife along the black stamping on the edge.  I pondered about the focal point for ages because I couldn't decide what to use. In the end I chose this 'Found Relative' by Tim Holtz, layered it onto black card stock and added another piece of book text as a little label. I also added white splatters and a sentiment which is made out of two sentiments from Everything Art {EEA02} and the '&' from the big background stamp {EEA05}. I stamped them onto the edge of the book text I used to keep them the same colour as the collaged pieces. A doodle line around the sentiment strips and here and there along the edges finished it off.

I love how all the elements work together on this art journal spread. Obviously you could use lots of the same techniques and materials for cards and any other projects too. I just happen to like art journalling because you can try out different materials and techniques in your journal and even if it doesn't work out you can just close the book and put it away. No pressure.  I hope you enjoyed my process and have a go yourself !

Thank you so much for stopping by here today and I hope you will visit me in my other locations too:

Beautiful work, Corrie! I just enjoyed viewing your process while drinking my morning coffee; life is sweet. I love your Gelli plate technique and I especially liked reading the I can use my chalk paints with the Gelli--I wasn't sure.
