2017 #17 White: Poinsettia Wall Hanging with EEV {by Wanda Hentges}

2017 Topic 17: Shades of White

White on white on white and repeat. How stunning is this by Wanda! Well perhaps some off white creeps in, but you do need that contrast, and its wonderful!

Hi everyone, it's Wanda Hentges (Art By Wanda) with you today, and I'd like to share with you a wall hanging in shades of white.

I was looking through my Ellen Vargo stamps trying to decide just what I was going to create thinking about Shades of White and thinking about Christmas.  When I saw set number EEV04, I immediately thought poinsettia and so began my project.

PaperArtsy Products used:
Other Products:
  • Corrugated Packing
  • Chipboard
  • White Corrugated Cardboard
  • Golden Gesso
  • Golden Heavy Gel Matte
  • Archival Ink - Potting Soil, Leaf Green
  • Tim Holtz Poinsettia Stencil
  • Ranger Texture Paste
  • Ranger Distress Dry Glitter - Rock Candy
  • Ranger Mica Spray - Pearl
  • Susan's Garden Flower Shaping Tools and Mats
  • Prills - Minnie Pearls
  • White 1/8" Eyelets

  • Tim Holtz Holiday Talk Metallic Sticker

I didn't trust myself to free hand cut the "petals" for my poinsettia so I made a pattern.  I stamped one image on a scrap piece of paper, sketched around it, cut it out and also cut some of the center out so I could line it up over my actual petals.

As I got more comfortable cutting I did add other spikes on the edges so they didn't all appear exactly the same.  I began my flower thinking I was going to do a simple poinsettia, just 5 leaves and call it good.  For those first 5 I painted heavy smoothy with Chalk and stamped the image with a mix of approximately half and half, Gold and Vanilla. Once I had them cut out and tried putting my flower together, I was unhappy with it and decided I needed many more petals.  I did 10 more, 5 with a mix of Gold and Honey Dew and 5 with a mix of Gold and Chalk.  Mixing the paints worked really well!!!  The colors look kind of pearly, the hint of Gold keeps them tied together but it's more interesting because they aren't all exactly the same.

To give more definition to my petals, I pulled out my flower shaping tools.

After shaping them all I found a 5-petal flower punch in my stash and built my poinsettia off of that.

I absolutely loved the poinsettia once it was done and knew this had to become a home decor piece.  I have quite a bit of corrugate that is covered on one side and wide open corrugate on the other.  I know it came as packaging in something at one time.  I decided it would be perfect.  I coated the corrugate side with gesso, wiped it back with a baby wipe and splattered it with White Fire.  I had thought about stamping it or stamping tissue and gluing it on but then decided another panel between the corrugate and the poinsettia would be better.

For this final panel, on top of stamping and a white wash, I created lots of texture, shimmer and shine with Paste, Mica Spray and Glitter.  Some fluffy fibers to cover the center as the stencil wasn't large enough to cover the whole panel.  I made a line down the middle and worked the stencil out from the center on both sides.  This piece really sets the poinsettia off nicely!!!!

You will find more pictures showing step-by-step how I did the panels on my blog.

I was actually very nervous about trying to do something in Shades of White but am totally in love with my finished piece!!!  I hope you are inspired to play along with the challenge.  Please be sure to link up your play as I'd love to come see it!!!

I think this is wonderful! I really love the idea of a white poinsettia, and I think your sparkly panel it sits on is perfect too! Just shows how many shades of white you can make and how effective it can be to work with tones of one pale shade! Beautiful, and thankyou! ~Leandra

2017 #17 White: White Christmas with EKC {by Miriam Grazier}

2017 Topic 17: Shades of White

Miriam has done a sparkly number with her Grunge paste Tonight! Check it out....

Hi everyone, it's Miriam from Miriam's Creative Dreams with you today, and I'd like to share with you two Christmas cards that I have made using Kay Carley stamps and stencils.

I chose this technique because it really put me outside of my comfort zone. I've never thought about how I would describe my art but clean and simple  or white does not enter my definition at all.  I really thought that I would struggle, but after sitting at my work space and looking at my stamps and stencils, the ideas flowed.

Normally, a white card base is covered in at least one other colour, but I really liked the crisp nature of this project and the fact that I could add dimension and detail which kept to the theme of white.

I stencilled Grunge Paste through PaperArtsy Stencil 070 (PS070)

I had a idea to cover the Grunge Paste in clear glitter - but wasn't sure if this would work - and it did - I was really happy with this result and left it to dry thoroughly overnight.  The snowflakes look glistening!  I'm not normally one to go to the glittery side, but as I was already stepping out of my comfort zone, I thought I would give glitter a chance - and I liked it!! I know that a few friends will be doing happy dances right now!

Even with just a small amount of colour, the crispness of the white stood out and dominated my project.
Eclectica³ Kay Carley: Set 10 (EKC10)

I used the swirl from EKC04 to sit the tree on.

I discovered that I could use a pop of colour (and in this project I used Zucchini, Hyde Park and Cherry Red Fresco Finish Chalk Paint), and that the white would be the dominant colour on the project.

I loved how I could use texture in the sense of Grunge Paste and glitter but stick to the 'white' theme.  Putting myself outside my comfort zone made me realise how striking and effective a clean and simple card could be.

I enjoyed making this card so much that I made another straight after.

This card followed the same principles as the last .  I just loved using Kay's stamps and stencils.  They worked so well for the Pure Colour theme of white.  The crisp images were just perfect for what I wanted to achieve.

I thought I would struggle with this theme, which is why I chose it.  But actually, I found that I could compromise by adding to the white background using texture.  I decided that it was good to push myself into an area I was not comfortable with - and I am hoping that I can expand on this going forward.  In fact, I plan to make more of these cards for Christmas.

I really hope that I have encouraged you to create a project using this theme - especially is, like me, you feel uncomfortable creating a clean and simple card using a true white colour.  You can see the detail of how I created these cards by popping over to my blog.

Thank you for joining me tonight - I hope you join in with this fortnight's challenge.

Miriam I love how the glittery GP turned out too! Great idea! And your cards look very less-is-more! Well done on conquering the white! ~ Leandra

2017 #17 White: Minimalist Home Decor with EDY {by Lucy Edmondson}

2017 Topic 17: Shades of White

Lucy is heading into cushion-design with this option to brighten up any room. What oucld you stamp? Pre-bought cushion covers and a bit of planning regarding colour and stamps, and you are in action!

Hi everyone, it's Lucy here, from Lucy's True Colours, and today I'd like to share with you some crisp white reversible cushion covers for your bedroom or living room, stamped with Fresco Finish Acrylic Paints.

When I first saw the topic 'White', it made me think of the all white decor of aspirational estate agency programmes, and interviews with rich celebrities in glossy magazines. Do they have dogs and children, I ask myself? Or is it just that they have a daily cleaner and a huge dry cleaning bill?. For us mere mortals, I thought I would make some very manageable reversible cushion covers as the Frescos become perfectly washable when mixed with a little fabric medium, and you can use whatever colours match the rest of your room. I've been wanting to make these for a long time but I found it surprisingly difficult to source suitable white cushion covers at a reasonable price (by which I mean I never spend much in case I mess up!). Then I found these at a certain Swedish store and they are absolutely perfect as they have a lovely weave but still stamp extremely well.

I made myself a palette with the Fresco colours I wanted to use, and a little drop of Liquitex Fabric Medium. I used a piece of Cut N Dry sponge and for the first side of my cushion cover I used the stunning feather from Darcy's  EDY09 which is quite a large image.

For the top of the image I used a dab each of Purple Rain, Wisteria, and Lavender, and the lower part of the image, a dab each of Caribbean Sea and Smurf Fresco Finish Paints, and then cut a small strip of Cut N Dry to apply the Gold to the spine of the feather. You only need a tiny amount of the fabric medium.

I stamped the feather at different angles over the cushion cover, keeping plenty of white background.

I then repeated the process on the other side of the cushion, this time using the Leaf from Darcy's  EDY 10.

Here are the cushions on my sofa, although I think they would look great in a bedroom.

And here's a closer look.

I enjoyed making this project so, so much! It really inspired and energized me after a non creative period caught up with family issues, and made me want to stamp every piece of fabric in sight! It also made me feel more excited about Christmas as I feel similar projects would make perfect gifts, especially if you know your recipient's colour schemes. It would also be great fun to use Christmas images to stamp napkins for your table setting, or how about stamping a white pillow case to act as a gift sack at the bottom of a child's bed? The ideas are endless!

I love how you have used different leaf stamps on the cushions, and the soft shades of blue are so pretty on white too! Love this idea Lucy, and glad you sourced covers so easily too! ~ Leandra

2017 #17 White: French Boudoir with Squiggly Ink {by Liz Borer}

2017 Topic 17: Shades of White

Liz has created one of her trademark projects for this post. Lots of wonderful details. If you want something to get your teeth into, this is a great idea and works so well in this colourway.

Hi there everyone I'm so glad to be back with another blog post for PaperArtsy.

I've been very quiet recently due to many things happening in my life which include my daughter's wedding and moving house! Needless to say my craft stash is in great disarray due to the move so I had to use the stamps I could find. As for the embellishments, well again I had to use what I could find in the chaos.

Instead of my normal style of describing how I did this I am writing it as an inspirational piece as well as some description of what I did. This is mainly because I made the box I used into a kind of printers tray with apertures. I did this because I wanted wide, flat divisions between the apertures so I could decorate them. I used greyboard for this and white foam board behind the divisions to create the 'walls'. The added advantage to this was that I didn't have to paint them as they were already white!

I decided that I would need some colour in this project to make the white stand out. Therefore I painted the frame with London Night. Once dry I applied Crackle Glaze randomly and once dry I painted the whole frame with Chalk. This allowed a little variation in colour but kept the frame basically white.

Next I found a floral stencil and spread Grunge Paste through it onto the frame. Again it's white so I didn't have to paint over it. I rubbed a little Treasure Gold in White Fire over the raised areas. Frame finished!

The greyboard panel was painted with Lake Wanaka and then with Chalk. I then sanded the white off in places to get a subtle grey colour before using more Grunge Paste through a different stencil. I added more Treasure Gold as before.

I stamped some script (from Stamp Set HP1303) using Watering Can Archival ink which I used for all the stamping as it blended with the colour scheme. I also created a very subtle effect stamping flowers from EEB03 and iridescent embossing powder.

The backgrounds for each aperture were cut from a piece of card that I had painted first with Chalk. After that was dry I applied Lake Wanaka, London Night and Mermaid paint randomly over the white base coat using a wet wipe and just swirling the colours over the card. To add some gold I mixed the Treasure Gold with alcohol ink blending solution to make a paint and rubbed this here and there over the card. Finally I swirled more Chalk paint with a wet wipe over the colours to lighten them.

So that's really all I wanted to say about the box and frame.

To complete the backgrounds of each aperture, I stamped and embossed with Ivory embossing powder various designs onto the card prepared above.

Top left and middle left  used EEB05. Middle behind lady I used HP1305. Top right I used HP1009 and Lower right behind bucket I used EEB03.
I left the others plain because they were covered by embellishments.

Before I started this project I had decided to decorate the frame as I have described but I hadn't really thought about how I would finish it. When I looked at the colours and the finish it reminded me of a French ladies boudoir which is why I have set out the embellishments as they are .

I made the bookcase out of greyboard and painted it with Chalk paint. The books are also greyboard painted white. The beauty of these paints is that they adhere to glass so I painted the bottles white.

The stamping on the books and bottles is from  the stamp from HP1216 which is mainly words.  A tiny fragment of this stamp looks great on these little pieces.

Most of the embellishments are painted with a base colour before adding white on top. In this picture the bucket was painted with Lake Wanaka and Crackle Glaze before the white.

The poppy seed heads were painted with London Night before dry brushing with white. I added a little glitter embossing powder to them.

Frame: I stamped the face from EEB03 onto a scrap of the background paper and embossed with gold.

The gold 'jar' was a Christmas glass Bauble painted with White Fire Treasure Gold and while painting it I also painted the bottle gold. When that was dry I added Crackle Glaze with white paint over it. I liked the effect of the gold showing through the cracks.

Again I made the table from greyboard and a wooden knob, painted white. I stamped the little bottles as before using HP1216.

Obviously I have added other embellishments but I just wanted to comment on how I coloured Some of them.l hope you have enjoyed my ideas and perhaps they have inspired you.

Bye for now.
Liz

Wow, what a stunner Liz! I love how the tiniest elements all come together perfectly. This is simply beautiful!! ~Leandra

2017 #17 White: White on White Mobile with ESA {by Alison Bomber}

2017 Topic 17: Shades of White

From all things rust to all things white. Quite a contrast in these Topics, but we do love a challenge, and working with shades of white can be exactly that, but once you start to look at texture, shiny vs matte or sparkle, you have the makings of a lot of gorgeous posts! Plus, I do think this fits nicely into an elegant Christmas theme too! Let's see what Alison brings ot this topic! Always a crowd-pleaser, I'm sure you will love this idea!

Hello all, Alison here from Words and Pictures with some white on white action for you... and I do mean action.  I have a mobile for you today - the very name meaning it's always in movement... yes, I set myself another photographic challenge!

I don't really know why, but the very moment I put Shades of White together in my brain with the idea of using Seth's stamps, the mobile jumped into my head.  I could suddenly see it... Seth's Wood Chips, some glossy white embossing over a softer chalky background, catching the light as it moved.  It's really unusual for me to have such a clear picture of where I'm going.  I'll leave you to decide whether I got there.

I experimented with a couple of different hanging methods - if I'd gone with string as the mechanism, then it would really have been hard to capture as they would all have been twirling crazily.  The wire I eventually chose means things are a little stiller, so you can get a half decent shot!

I thought I'd use the circles and stars to give the mobile a wintry look to go with the whites - snowballs/stars/snowflakes as the idea.

Seth's wood chips come in a sheet as above, ready to pop out the shapes, and he also cleverly planned them to have some matching stamps ESA03 and ESA04, which as you can see, fit the shapes. The frames are a nice bonus and offer all kinds of options as far as layering and framing go too.

I used the Fresco Chalk Paint in Chalk on the Wood Chips - it's a lovely warm white.  I did a couple of coats, sanding in between so that I'd have a nice smooth surface.

Seth's sets ESA03 and ESA04 not only work with the Wood Chip shapes (or vice versa, probably!) but also with his StencilGirl 'insiders' and 'outsiders' stencils, and he has a wide range of Spellbinders dies that mimic the star and circle theme too.

For the embossing, I used Wow Bright White powder over Versamark ink.  On one side I've used the fabulous texty stamps from ESA04...

... and on the reverse sides I've used the graphic designs from ESA03 (except on the outline Wood Chips - they've got text on both sides).

The frame is made from the internal ring of an embroidery hoop and some coffee stirrers, all painted in Chalk, and glued together.

And for my hanging mechanism I went for the recycling option... wiggly wire from a used paper pad - and of course it's another shade of white.

I love the sculptural effect of the slightly straightened spirals in the air, and of course it's incredibly easy to attach the elements - just bend and twist and you're done.

It wasn't the sunniest of mornings for the photographs, but I'm really pleased with how the embossing shows up, and it's even better when the light is brighter.

So for once I knew where I was going and there were relatively few obstructions along the way (just as well, as I was working on a very tight time restriction!).  I did try out the effect of inking the edges with some Vintage Photo Distress Ink on one of the stars, just to see if I wanted to go that way, but I washed it away again.  (You can see the temporarily-inked star in the photo with the still-curly book wire - see what you think.)  I like the clean, fresh look of the pure white on white.  I hope my shades of white give you some ideas to play with over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Isn't the embossing on the chalk paint perfect! And I could not work out what your squiggly wire was until you said! A great idea Alison and as Frescos are equally happy outdoors as indoors, you could leave that outside too! ~ Leandra
