2019 #7 Topic introduction: Turquoise

 2019 Topic 7: Turquoise

Well hello everyone, Keren here! Welcome to another new theme: Turquoise!
Turquoise has a history that some people are confused over. Many think that the stone was named after the colour but it is the very opposite. It is one of earliest mined gemstones often recovered as a by-product of large scale copper mining operations. Unlike iron or copper that are primary elements, turquoise is a secondary element and it's formed by a combination of minerals that are impacted by weathering and oxidisation.

This is a stunning colour that brings life and warmth to so many different colours that it can be paired with. The mix of blue and green brings boldness and yet pairs so elegantly with neutrals too. I've garnered a group of photos using different shades of turquoise and hope you find something to inspire you.

We start with the simple and elegant. This appeals to my CAS (Clean and Simple) loving heart. I love the stitching and quilting and can imagine this transferring to a paper-crafted project perfectly.

We are staying with fabric, contrasting how different turquoise can seem when it partners with a darker and more subdued palette. It has a real arts and crafts look about it and its vibrancy is downplayed but still brings a warmth to those cooler colours.

If you're hunting for art with some zing, look no further than this bold beauty, showing just how much brightness turquoise brings and is perfectly at ease with gold, green, dark cerise and red.

Sometimes less is most definitely more and using turquoise as an accent lifts the colour scheme on this elegant concertina album.

If texture hits the spot for you, then this fabulous card has it in abundance but also delivers an arty looking combo where turquoise is most definitely the leading lady.

This beautiful example has little pops of turquoise in the flowers, sequins, beads and feathers and cleverly adds just enough but not too much!

This next artist needs kudos if only for the time taken and perfect execution. However, it's much more than that, using lots of shades of turquoise and patterned paper to create some mesmerising art. Don't you just want to reach in and touch it?!

This aptly named artist has a love of turquoise and it's evident in her riveting blog. Combining the colour with the bright, almost neon pink and purple really lifts the colour and gives the canvas real vivacity.

This next project stopped me in my tracks. I've never seen altered headphones and thought it was pretty cool. Turquoise takes on a different look from the combo before when combined with green, brown and black and white.

If you're wondering how you might get the look. I've a trio of Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic paints to start you off: Beach Hut, Turquoise and Captain Peacock. Try adding them to the colours you've got and come up some splendid combinations.

It is surprising to find our theme colour so at home in a vintage-styled project, and yet, it works. Notice the torn edges with little bits of turquoise just peeping through.

Having turquoise as the hero colour was important to show, and this card is sublime in its simplicity but proudly portrays the main colour. Stunning.

This next set of ATCs are my favourite project of all of the turquoise themed ones. The multiple layers of paint, text and colour and the injection of colour with the red are sumptuous. A clever design and one you'd love to receive in an ATC swap.

Big stores aren't always where we look to for inspiration, but Anthropologie is known for its artistry and clever displays. The mustard pairs so beautifully with the turquoise, teal and mocha.

We like to have something in the topic from the PaperArtsy family, and Lucy's tissue flowers fit the bill perfectly. Lovely semi translucent layers with painted stamped flowers on top!

Coral pink was an unexpected colour duo that works magnificently. Notice the tiny accents of yellow and you have a combination fit for the 'summeriest' of days.

Although this grouping of colours is similar to one we've already seen, I thought it was worth adding as in its starkness there is real beauty. Sometimes we just need to let one main colour sing.

Last, but certainly by no means, least, this party on a canvas reflects turquoise's chameleon nature; it really can morph into so many different combinations and look really at home. Despite them being all so vibrant, none are overly fighting for dominance and yet there turquoise is, coolly stating 'just look at me'!

2019 #7: Turquoise & Orange & Pink with EKD [By Corrie Herriman}

2019 Topic 7: Turquoise

Corrie is with us today creating a type of project she doesn't always do and with her favourite colours too. With lots of stencilling and Copic colouring, she's ended up with quadruple the amount of gorgeousness!

Hi everyone, it's Corrie here with you today, and I'd like to share my project that I made for the Turquoise topic with you.

I made 4 cards this time. I love turquoise; it is one of my favourite colours, add pink and orange and I am in heaven. So that is what I did; I combined all my favourite colours together.

I really enjoyed making these cards. I don't often make cards but usually enjoy the process when I do. Basically they are just small Art Journal pages or they could be! The most important thing is that you enjoy what you do.

I decided that I wanted to use my Gel press plate to make the backgrounds. I used PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics in the colours Snowflake, Turquoise and Mermaid. For the card panels I used PaperArtsy card Smoothy Heavyweight.

This was the first layer of paints for which I used PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics Snowflake and Mermaid.

For the third and final layer I used PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic in Turquoise and a stencil by Kim Dellow PS034.

The next step was to add more interest with stamps. I used two PaperArtsy stamp sets: EKD05 and EKD06 both designed by Kim Dellow. I used different colours ink but also different types of ink. Sometimes, when you don't have all the colours, you will have to improvise. I used Distress Oxide Inks for the pink {Pink Raspberry}, orange {Carved Pumpkin} and turquoise {Peacock Feathers} stamping. For black I used Versafine ink {Onyx Black}.

Here I am deciding which stamp I want on which card as a focal image. I looked at how much white space there was and where I stamped. Basically I looked for the placement that was most pleasing to the eye.

After stamping the images on white card stock I coloured them with my Copic Markers, choosing pinks and oranges, which I think go so very well with turquoise.

I also stamped the focals on the cards. I then cut out the flowers, leaves and butterfly and started putting the cards together. I decided to add some more stamping in the backgrounds too. I used another image from Kim's sets and used a gray Stazon ink Dove Gray because that was the gray I wanted. For the stems I just coloured some strips of paper with black stripes and cut them out.

All card panels were adhered onto a white card base. I decided to just add some words from a Tim Holtz Big Chat sticker book but you could easily turn these cards into birthday cards or thank you cards or something.

I think they turned out really nice. I love the pink and orange with the turquoise. Another colour that goes really well with turquoise is brown but I wasn't in the mood for Vintage today !

It is strangely satisfying to do something that you normally don't do very much. So why not try yourself. Do an art journal spread if you don't do that very often, or if you are a card maker try making some ATC's or tags. The outcome can be surprisingly nice! I just combined a lot of favourite things into one project and that way it becomes very enjoyable!

2019 #7: Turquoise with ESA 'Experiment' [By Etsuko Noguchi}

2019 Topic 7: Turquoise

In this wonderfully layered post, Etsuko creates some stunning layers, all of which she explains so clearly for you below. I love to see how she brings her pieces together, she makes such a wide variety of crafty creations, a very talented lady! ~Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Etsuko My Favorite Things with you today, and I'd like to share with you Topic Turquoise using fabulous Seth Apter's stamps, paints and Baked Textures.

I love Seth's mixed media fine art, his unique work of art always fascinates me and it is amazing to see that the materials the deals with will magically transform. Today I tried the mixed media configuration using his stamps and so on.

First, I made turquoise color background.

I collaged pieces of book paper and painted them with white gesso. Then I painted them with Turquoise, Green Patina and Hey Pesto.

Also I used EM35, EM36 and some Seth's stamp with his Baked Textures: Chunky Rust, Rocky Road and Ancient Amber, this made the background a bit thicker with the lovely texture from the embossing powders.

And repeatedly I also added Neocolor pastels and Fresco Paints to get a satisfying turquoise color.

This is the finished background work.

Next I made three pieces for layers.

First I painted mixed Mud Splat, Mahogany and Buff on White Smoothy Heavy Card then I randomly splatted Turquoise and Green Patina. And I embossed ESA07 stamp with DeepSea Baked Texture.

This photo is focal point, I stamped ESA06 by Sepia Archival on Smoothy White Card. Then I made the SEEK EYE watch frame using Rocky Road and Beeswax Baked Textures with ESA11 and EM39.

Finally I made word Experiment from ESA08 and third piece of layer from ESA06. The word Experiment embossed by Rocky Road on tissue paper and embossed ESA06 item with Chunky Rust on another black painted paper. Both of them cut and pasted to the place shown in the photo. I embossed by Patina Oxide Baked Texture with some splat stamp the overall. And I painted by London Bus Fresco on the book paper then rip it thinly and stuck it vertically to be the point.

I made the combination of turquoise and brown, but the brown tone was difficult. I thought that it would be fun if I tried various colours to be the medium, and I put the word 'EXPERIMENT'. I think the combination of colours is a very enjoyable task and turquoise is a very attractive color. Please try and challenge it everyone.

Thank you so much for visiting.
