2019 Topic 17: A Vintage Christmas
Hi everyone, it's Anneke with
you today, and I'd like to share with you 2 spreads I made in my
December 2019 Daily. As you know a December Daily is a mini album
project that documents the 25 days days leading up to Christmas. The
simple goal is to capture the spirit of December via one story a day.
I'm going to do a spread for each day. During the month of November I'll prepare the pages: making backgrounds, adding dates, making pockets to stack up al kinds of keepsakes.....
As you'll see below I already did December 06 and December 25. I'll add small photos, keepsakes and text as the days go by.
I worked with JOFY stamps and stencils from previous releases. JOFY stamps don't look vintage in any way, so I had to add a few vintage elements to make the pages fit the theme. I adhered buttons, vintage ribbon, snow and I used a glazing technique to give the pages a worn look.

To
document my month of December I'm working in an ECD planner this year.
Any type of journal or planner works for this projects, you even could
make one yourself.
I've cut the pages out of 300grs watercolor paper. I love this paper because it works well with a variety of wet media. I've chosen to work with a pink/orange and blue/green color combination.
For the blue/green pages I worked with Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics Limelight together with 3 brand new colors: Lawn, Aquamarine and Summer Sky.
I started by adding texture to the pages. With a palette knife I applied Paper Artsy Grunge Paste through stencils (JOFY PS132 and a stencil from the Tim Holtz Mini Stencil Set 32).
The squares were done with Tim Holtz Distress Collage Medium Crazing and the JOFY PS131 stencil.
I
also made splatters with masking fluid. The masking fluid works as a
resist. After drying I colored the pages with the blue and green paint
using a flat brush.
Next I applied a glazing technique to give the pages a distressed look. I brushed a mixture of Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics Inky Pool and Golden Glazing Liquid on the pages.
After
a few minutes I removed most of the glaze layer using baby wipes. I
repeated this step using Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics Marlin.
I stamped the stars from the JOFY 57 stamp set and colored them with Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics Aquamarine, Sargasso, Lawn, Summer Sky, Limelight, Pixie Dust, Cerise and Peach Nectar.
Love how the glaze gets into all the nooks and crannies and highlights the texture.
I
did the pink/orange pages the same way as the blue/green ones. Here I
used Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics Taro Milk Tea (a new color as well!), Pixie Dust, Peach Nectar and Bubble Gum and I worked with the Tim Holtz Layering Stencil Starry. For the glaze layers I also used Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics Inky Pool and Marlin (a discontinued dark blue).
I made a pocket that holds 2 tags. On the pocket I stamped a large word from the JOFY 68 stamp set with Versamark ink. I heat embossed the word using WOW embossing powder Opaque Bright White.
The text stamps I used on the tags are from the EEG02 stamp set. On the left tag I'll do some journaling later on.
On
this tag I used a stamp from the JOFY82 stamp set. In my opinion this
abstract image does look like a Christmas tree, without its stem. The
border on the right was done with a stamp from the JOFY78 set. I find it challenging to create a Christmas themed item without Christmas stamps :)
For the tag toppers I looked for matching ribbon in my stash.
To create the page on the left I fist stamped the text from the JOFY 68 set with Versamark ink
and heat embossed the words with WOW embossing powder Opaque Bright
White. Next I painted the page, the embossing worked as a resist.
Love the white spots that appeared after removing the masking fluid.
To create the background of the card panel I sponged Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics Pixie Dust through the JOFY PS147 stencil. I stamped the trees from the JOFY 57
set on top. I stamped the tree pots and trees again on scraps of
painted paper and glued them on top of the stamped image. I added
details to the trees using a pink POSCA pen and decorated the card with
Aleene's True Snow.
Torn
strips of vintage paper, a piece of vintage ribbon, snow....It all
helped to add a touch of vintage to the spread. I even cut a strip of
white paper with decorative paper edge scissors to imitate an old photo.
I was a bit worried the masking fluid wouldn't hold with all the painting and rubbing going on. To my surprise it stayed in place, even after 2 layers of glaze and lots of rubbing with baby wipes. I even had to rub firmly with my fingers to remove it. Love all the white speckles that appeared!
For the glaze layers I've chosen to work with blue colors instead of the usual brown ones. Love the subtle vintage feel it gave to the pages, just enough to fit my style.
Making
a December Daily Journal is a great way to document and remember the
family moments and traditions that come along with the festive month of
December. If you never made one yourself or are still in doubt I hope I
could encourage you to start one yourself. You can make it as simple or as detailed as you wish. Documenting big and small Christmas memories is so fun to do!
