Ellie's pink giraffe looks so at ease with itself, it makes me wonder why we don't see them in the real world! Gorgeous sunset colours and lots of collaged stamping makes for a really tranquil page. ~ Keren

Hi everyone, it's Ellie Knol from PAPER-STAMPS-COLOR again with you today, and I'd like to share with you a pink giraffe journal spread. 

For me I wanted to try to make a collage of all the stamps in the stamp set HP2002.. and of course the color PINK.That's where I started, until I had a good (or not so good) idea; to google 'pink giraffe'..
I particularly like the insect stamps (LOVE to use them in collages) but the giraffe collage caught my eye too...
Giraffes are really very curious animals.. if you approach them in real life, they stand where they are and watch you closely. I've seen them that way in South Africa, in the field, with my daughter.. the dominant male is the last one to run ... the elegant way that they run, almost like slow-motion.. but nothing like that!

The finished spread .. a few hours / days later.

I used this new beautiful addition to the Hot Picks line, HP2002.

and the words from this ESC12 collage stamp.. 

This is where it all started.. collaging all the stamps in the set plus the following: HP1005, HP1010, HP1501.

This meant I could make a coloring page.. just to see how it would have to look, to learn from, and decide where my project would go.

Maybe add some pink elements and keep it 'simple'??

I already had this art journal spread prepped with gesso and fresco paints.. a sunset type of page.. using some colors that are only seen at sunset.. the deep yellow and pinkish colors! In the middle, I left some white to make the stamped images pop. At this stage I decided to go with collage stamping, but not in black: only in yellow and pink in the background to start with. 

At this stage I googled pink giraffe and saw this image, which made me look at the giraffe a different way....so ..
I stamped and fussy-cut the giraffe in pink and black, on tissue paper and on cardstock and on thin white paper. Did some first and second generation stamping, and heat embossed it with clear.

WHY?

I wanted to achieve one of the giraffes being pink, and the other one??  ...his dots fell off .. so here you are...

This is why I like to do these themes for Paper Artsy. I would never have thought of stamping a pink giraffe.. did you? I have to craftalong to see where it'll get me, and in the end I've learned a lot, and also know what to avoid next time, or change next time.. Do you also have this experience when creating? 

It's like a challenge.. and I love challenges.. I do things different .. all the time... that's part of the fun..

2020 #5 Mark Making: Into Africa with Hot Picks {by Carol Fox}

Mark making on fabric requires different techniques and Carol has some great tips. I love her experimentation with clay in a Melt Pot and the finished bag has a fantastic safari vibe!

Hi everyone, it's Carol with you today, and I'd like to share with you a project bag I have made for my knitting. I added a little tab on the side to hold a couple of stitch markers. I chose my fabric and zip to match the paints I would be using and the Cayenne which I matched my zip and tab to give it all nice pop of colour against the shades of green.

I treated my blank fabric panel just as I would a journal page,just remembering that the very edge would be lost in the sewing up, so I took this into account when placing the Giraffe.

Using bIack Archival in I stamped and masked the Giraffe from HP2002 onto my fabric.

I found the Shades Guacamole, Zucchini and Granny Smith were a near perfect match for my printed fabric so I used these as a base for the background.

  

I used Guacamole, Zucchini, Granny Smith, Cayenne and Caramel with stencils PS124 and PS036 to add marks and detail to my background. I then used PS136 and Snowflake to knock it back and to blend it all together.

 

I used the bug stamp from the new HP2002  to add detail on my background.

I used a die cut, that I cut from funky foam with paints Zucchini and Guacamole mixed on my mat to bring the green background to the front a little bit more.

My quote is from stamp set ESN28.

I followed on the theme of circles on the quote and used an old lid and Little Black Dress paint to add them to my background.

I coloured the Giraffe with pencils. I used Caran d'Ache and I have found a blunter pencil works better on fabric.

I used Stencil PS036 again here with a blue pencil to draw in between the lines to just add a light pop of blue.

Using a sewing machine I added stitching to the fabric panel.

I stamped the elephant from HP2002 onto an acrylic circle to add to my zipper pull and two of the bugs I stamped onto clay, I pressed quite hard and it made a nice imprint into the clay.I added jewellery findings to the top to use as stitch Markers.

I like making little bags like this. I find them handy to keep odd knitting projects together or this size (which is just under A4 sized) is a nice size to take a smaller journal and odd pens and bits out in if going to a class or to journal with friends. 

I have used an unbleached calico fabric but I also used odd scraps or a pillowcase for my main stamped part; a pair of plain white pillowcases are very cheap and work fine. I also baked my clay in my Melt pot for the first time. I did get a little discoloration on the back where it sat on the pan, but apart from that it worked great. Next time I will find something heatproof to sit it on to allow the heat to pass under it. I think a bit of metal mesh or similar will work fine.

Hot Picks are a collection that give a nod to the core genre that 'brand PaperArtsy' was built upon. Our original style since 2003 was the quirky Vintage vibe and quite a small format, suitable for ATC and cards. By 2010, Hot Picks were born from the constant demand for masculine imagery and larger format stamps as people moved off the page into journaling, altered art (now increasingly re-branded as mixed media) and even into painty scrapbooking. 

Mark, (my husband and business buddy) has been the designer of this range from the outset. In 2019 he kept hearing the phrase ‘jungle vibes’.  I have a vision to redecorate something in this style, so to warm him up to this idea, I keep pointing out the jungle trend to him – Pinterest, Instagram, in shops, TV adverts, that sort of thing. Typical of him, he poo-pooed it for ages, and then lo and behold, jungle vibe stamps miraculously appeared out of the blue!! I did NOT see that coming! The lesson – husbands do listen after all! There is hope! Ha ha!

Hot Pick 2001 (HP2001/HP2001EZ)

There's a lot on this plate for the fishing expert in your life, but there is something calm and peaceful about fish stamps, so great on a journal page too! This one comprises a couple of very simple layers.

Hot Pick 2002 (HP2002/ HP2002EZ)

I was just trying to warm up my mojo on this sample, so its all on one layer. A mix of paint, infusions and some oxide ink droplets. Nothing too tricky.

Project One: Smooth Fish

Intro: I found some old book page, and it always makes a great surface to start with. A bit of paint, ink and in a blink a fishy tag was done!

The base layer was dark oxide inks, Walnut and Vintage Photo, a bit of water flicking and the 'school of fish' stamped over repeatedly.

You can see that the images was stamped an embossed in clear. That was only because I used a slow drying ink (Versafine Clair), which is perfect onto sucky paper, but was slow drying over the paint I had put on the old book page, so it happily attracted some glossy EP.

You can see the contrasting layers nicely here, and I love how the book page script looks so distressed due to the paint layer. The fish was coloured with some infusions picked up with a water brush.

Project Two: Spiky Fish

I love this stamp particularly the number detail in the background. Stamping it in a dark colour onto any background, patterned card-stock, perhaps a mixed media BG and you have an instant card or tag is sorted. But if you want to go the next level…then here’s some detail.

The shoal of fish at the foot were stamped in black onto painted card, torn and layered. Little highlights of metallic glaze on the fish give the glint I needed to replicate silver scales.

The school of fish (just visible on the blue are) were stamped with Heavy Cream Fresco paint directly onto a piece of grey board (our grey board has a white paper on one side of it) This provided a resist for the next step. A Bit Jaded Infusions are tapped gently over the background, you only want the tiniest amount of crystals on the surface, then activate with water. They sink into the white paper and when dry the Cream paint pops softly. 

Under the fish's body, Metallic Gold Paint was swiped across the centre zone, I wanted the fish to glint off the Infusions background. The image was stamped in Twilight Versafine Claire Ink, embossed in clear, and distress oxide re-inker, thinned with water, was added to build depth around the edges of the fish. 

 

Embellishments were stamped onto Copper Fresco-painted card, torn and added to the composition with accompanying 3D embellishments.

The edges were rubbed with Walnut Distress ink in places.

Project Three: Giraffe

Intro: Love this tall format stamp, his expression is quite amusing and some funny words could easily be added. I like that you can easily cut away the right-hand side and layer it on contrasting layers.

I brayered Heavy Cream Fresco chalk acrylic paint onto a 5x7” piece of grey-board. I wanted this as a resist so I could build oxide inks softly on the paint. If you apply them direct to sucky card the colours are much more intense, and I was going for ‘soft’. As i added layers and water, I got this grainy effect from the walnut component of the infusions. it reminded me of debris left behind when the tide goes out on a beach.

I made a watery background using infusions (Golden Sands) initially, then added layers of Distress Oxide Ink re-inker, the trick is to drip 3-4 drops directly onto the surface in a few areas, add water, dry, blot and repeat several times. This way you gradually build up the detail and depth of colour. I used Fossilised Amber in the centre, Vintage Photo and Walnut at the edges. The Pink is Tattered Rose, it went a bit darker as it picked up the brown-yellow tones from residual infusions.

 

I stamped the Giraffe in Versafine Claire Pinecone. I do like this ink by Tsukineko, it takes a while to dry when paint is underneath but it is sharp, dark and easy to ink up your stamp, quite a wet formula, onto card it dries immediately. (TIP: If you are impatient with in on paint, emboss it with clear powder, matte EP is good too!) 

To finish, I splattered infusions droplets (Black Knight) from a Tim Holtz splatter brush generously, but dabbed them off the giraffe. Ditto with the coral Oxide ink. And of course, I used Golden Sands infusions to add colour to the giraffe. Sprinkled a tiny amount onto craft sheet, spritz to activate, then pick up with a brush or water brush and add colour, again, drying in between layers to build colour depth.

I'm sure these stamps can be taken in many directions! And I bet you will!
