NEW PaperArtsy Products: Kay Carley {July/Aug 2023}

A note from Leandra:
We are switching things up a little for this Kay Carley release. Kay is right in the middle of moving house, so she is surrounded by boxes and lists! You know how it is when your moving date is hard to pinpoint, well that is what is going on!

Victoria Wilding to the rescue!!! Victoria will be sharing with you her ideas with these new stamps and stencils, and I think you might like seeing her interpretation with these beauties! As you know from her blog posts, Victoria really enjoys using watercolours, and beautiful, pretty delicate colours, which are super fun for this release! But, being an autumnal vibe, she also has experimented with some rustic moody colours too!

If you are looking for a stockist near you, there is a list at the foot of this post. It makes sense to order within your country where possible.

Hi everyone, Victoria here, filling Kay's shoes for this blog post.

This release captures the feel of being out and about in nature, as the world embraces autumn and one last bolt of colour, before the grey of winter sets in. I'm lucky enough to live a stones throw away from open countryside and as soon as I saw these designs, they transported me to autumnal countryside walks through fields, just before the grasses die back and through woodland with multicoloured trees and pathways scattered with leaves. So it was entirely natural that I wanted to capture the colours and textures of autumn in my makes, celebrating all the wonder that the season brings. I've made samples in a range of different styles and using a plethora of supplies and techniques, to show just how versatile these new designs are, so read on to discover more about these designs.

Price: RRP €23.00 +VAT    Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam with a laminated storage/index sheet.

 Gathering Storms

The grass stems work wonderfully as both the main focal point and also for filling in background details and they crop up time and again in many of the samples I have made for this release.  For my first sample I was channeling the view across fields as storms gather in the distance. The rolling clouds, dark on the horizon as the sun peaks through picking out the gold in the grasses, as they sway in the gathering wind.

And the real beauty is that this card was so simple to put together! Granulating watercolours create the perfect moody background with lots of texture and visual interest, whilst simple stamping in black ink shows the designs off to perfection, with a touch of gold foil and gold ink to bring out those glints of sunshine in my imaginary scene.

Nature's Posy

I love little posy's of natural flowers, so of course I was going to make a paper version with these gorgeous designs!  The grasses and stems in the collection also work beautifully with Kay's other stamps and stencils, so it's a perfect excuse to rummage through your stash and put your own combination together.

I decided to keep the background plain and simple to give maximum attention to the flowers. To create some depth to the posy, I first stencilled the leaf stems onto the card from stencil PS061 and then after stamping, colouring and fussy cutting all the stems from EKC70, arranged them on the page into a posy. The jute string bow which visually ties the posy together, compliments the Kraft border nicely and adds an extra element of texture to what is a very simple card.

 Autumn Journal Spread

These woodland illustrations are just screaming out to be coloured so, these journal pages were all about celebrating the simple beauty of the designs and the rich tapestry of colour autumn days bring.

I just had to turn the mushrooms into toadstools! I stamped them out in Archival Ink (Pebble Beach) so that the outlines would be more subtle and the colours could do the talking. I then put down a couple of spots of masking fluid to preserve the white spots and painted the mushrooms. Next I applied the watercolour wash to the background before finishing off the page with some splatter.

I actually created this page of leaves first and the picture just doesn't do the sparkle of those leaves justice! A branch of falling leaves in ALL the glittery, muted colours was the perfect creative warm-up before moving onto the slightly more involved mushroom painting.

Magic Mushrooms

I strayed back into moodier territory with this make and was thinking about the contrast of the dark woodland floor against the bright surprise of wild mushrooms. For the background I took a piece of cardboard packaging and wet one side with water to peel off the top layer and reveal the corrugated middle. I then applied some PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Acrylic (Nougat) with a dry brush, lightly to the raised areas. Next I sprayed Distress Resist Spray onto the cardboard before sprinkling it with metallic embossing powder and heat setting. For a final pop of texture, I took some text from the PaperArtsy Tissue Paper and glued onto blank areas.

Using my creative license, I decided to really play on the 'magic' of nature and coloured the mushrooms in unnatural blues and pinks to make them pop against the background. I then layered the corrugated card piece on some old music paper, applying a touch of pink ink to the edges, and mounted on my card and placed the sentiment.

Autumnal Leaves

Having enjoyed the relaxation of watercoloring the leaf branch so much, I decided to create one more journal page, this time playing with multiple stampings to create a telescopic view of a tree canopy. To finish the page I added peripheral leafy details using stencil PS326 and the sentiment.

I can just imagine standing next to the trunk of a big old tree and tilting my head to the sky, gazing through all those branches of autumn colour.

Eclectica³ Kay Carley Set 72 (EKC72)

 Sunset Meadow

The teasel heads are the stars of this stamp set and demanded attention. For the first card I wanted to create a sunset view with the teasels in the foreground and a lovely sunset landscape for the background. I used PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Acrylics in Lemon Meringue, Pumpkin Soup and Candy Floss for the sky and Spring for the field. A touch of randomly applied Blue Oyster tied the two parts together providing a more natural horizon line.

Once dry, I stamped the teasel design and sentiment onto the background in Black Archival Ink and coloured the designs with Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils.

Autumn Meadow

From the hazy colour at the end of a warm autumn day, my next card transports us to the end of autumn when the cold of winter is starting to encroach. I wanted to create a multi-stemmed meadow of mixed grasses with the teasel heads as an accent. Keeping to a paired back, cold colour palette I chose PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Acrylics in Truffle, Koala and Nougat

I applied a light wash of background colour and then added stencilled stems from one of the new stencils in the collection, PS401, and added stamping from EKC72 and EKC70 on top, before finishing with the fussy cut teasel heads which I mounted with foam pads. I finished by adding some gold foil to the stems to pick up a touch of winter sun.

PaperArtsy Stencil 401 (PS401)

 Trio of Stems Part One

Uncomplicated, playful making was the name of the game for these next two makes. I really enjoy creating my own collage ephemera on scrap pieces of paper so nothing goes to waste in my creative space! I wanted to pair some collage elements with stamping and some PaperArtsy Infusions. I took elements from the stencil PS401, picking out just  a couple of stems for this piece.

I also did some watercolour lifting using one of the stamps from EEKC70 to create the ghosting effect on the left and stamped directly to the card on the right. A sentiment (MN128) and postmark stamp (MN127) provide some extra visual detail. Finally, a sprinkle of PaperArtsy Infusions in Blackcurrant and some sparkle finishes this simple card.

Trio of Stems Part Two

Same but different, here I used the same overall process as the previous card but with an obvious colour difference and using a slightly different mix of collaged stamping and stencilling elements.

I stamped the stem on the left in ink over the top of the watercolour background and used PaperArtsy Infusions (The Sage) for the sprinkle of colour in the background. I also inked more of the stencil for the centre section and used a different stem (EKC70) and postmark (MN132) combination on the right.

PaperArtsy Stencil 402 (PS402)

 Mushroom Field

I'm back at the edge of the woods for this scenic little tag. I created the scene on an off cut of card, splashing some green ink splotches to the bottom half of the card before adding in some brown ink to the trunks (could also be used for bamboo by the way!) on PS402. I stamped and cut apart the sentiment from EKC72 and then stencilled the mushrooms from PS402, adding some outline in black ink and fussy cutting before gluing in place.

I wanted a subtle background for the rest of the tag so as not to distract too much from my tiny scene. I inked the edges of the tag with Distress Oxide in Gathered Twigs and Walnut Stain. I then applied just a touch of Peacock Feathers and Pickled Raspberry to the centre ares of the tag for some colour variation.

Finally I used PaperArtsy Minis MN62MN72MN124 and MN130 for some stamped background texture and completed the whole tag with some stitching and ribbon.

A Windswept Autumn Day

Do you remember the scene in Mary Poppins where all the nannies are blown away? Well this page in definitely channeling that wet and blustery kind of weather. This is one of those unorganised, throw everything at the page kind of journal pages, that is just about enjoying your supplies. I started off stencilling the leaf branch from PS402 in PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Acrylics in Autumn Fire and Venice Blue. In hindsight I should have placed the branches so they were coming in from the edges of the page as I think this would have compositionally worked much better.

I then added some background stamping (MN124, MN128, MN23, EM60) stencilling (PM025, PS021) and watercolour splotches.

The final layer was gluing down some fussy cut stencilled mushrooms from PS402, fussy cut stamped mushrooms and leaves from EKC71 and the sentiment also from this set, flowers from EKC15 and some ticket ephemera from my paper stash. Splatters and a doodled boarder complete the page.

PaperArtsy Stencil 403 (PS403)

 Teasing Teasels

PS403 is one of those stencils that does all the hard work for you, almost mocking your inability to get this one wrong! Creating an easy and effective focal point in minutes is as simple as layering some PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Acrylics (Celery, Beanstalk, Sugar Plum, Purple Rain) through the stencil with a stencil brush or sponge and adding in a few finishing details, which in this case were ink splashes, stamped stems and the sentiment from EKC70.

Oh and a bit of sparkle is always a nice little surprise in the right light!

Country Verge

Winding country lanes and grass verges are the natural home of grasses and teasels. Untamed, natural beauty at its best, with different species living happily side by side. So it seems appropriate to end with a make that celebrates the natural environment and serves as a reminder that sometimes we just need to let nature do it's thing.

I hope that by this point in the blog post, you can see that there's an unlimited number of ways you can use the various stems from this release together, mixing and matching across all the stamp and stencil sets.  A simple gel print paper using PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Acrylics in Waterfall, Space Cadet and Nougat provides a softly imperfect background to frame the natural scene of stems from PS403, EKC72 and EKC71.

As a self confessed floral addict, these lovely designs are sure to become firm favourites that I come back to time and again. I enjoyed making these cards and pages so much and still have a ton of new ideas to explore, especially with some of my older Kay Carley collections and perhaps some mash-ups with JOFY and Scrapcosy designs too!

Wishing you a happy, creative week!

You've done Kay proud Victoria. Gorgeous, delicate samples. Particularly love the mushroom/leaves plate.
