2019 #17 A Vintage Christmas: Snowman with EKC {by Chris Dark}

2019 Topic 17: A Vintage Christmas

Chris has created such a gorgeous vintage effect with Kay's stencil and stamps and ended up with a softly pencilled and painted snowman with such an unexpected but wonderfully Christmassy colour scheme.Her gift bags and tags are really special.

Hi everyone, it's Chris Dark with you today sharing my take on A Vintage Christmas. There are so many ways to interpret this topic and everyone's idea of it will be different but holly, snowmen, snowflakes and Christmas tree ornaments are definitely to be featured in mine so I chose to work with gorgeous recently released Christmas stamps and stencils by Kay Carley. All the stockists for the stamps and stencils I used can be found in this post.  It's nice to do a pretty project like this now and again with lots of sparkle and a gorgeous palette of colours that I feel reflects vintage from Tracey Scott's new Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic Paint release. Stockists for the paints can be found at the end of this post.

I always relish the prospect of working with stencils and Kay's snowman stencil PS161 is a joy. You can build him up so easily as all the parts of the stencil fit together for layering; look at the blog post linked above where Kay shows how the stencils can be used.  It's easy to create a different effect each time but  I've surrounded mine with holly from the PS162 stencil and the EKC32 stamp set. A gel plate helped me make the backgrounds, it works so well with the stencils for more layering of colour and the impression of texture.

I enjoy decorating gift bags and making tags for my Christmas gifts and everyone seems to appreciate them which is nice so I feel it's worth the effort. This one will be for my mum; it can be easily pegged onto the top edge of the bag.

There's a gel print in the background using some of the paints listed above. The Frescos  create a really nice base for stencilling and also for colouring with pencils. The mono print gives an even coating of paint on the card with a little tooth for the pencils to grab.

Die cut some holly, a silver skeleton leaf, silver mini clothes peg, and a silver glitter matting layer all help to add the vintage sparkle.

The gift bag follows on from the tag above in style with a stencilled and stamped mono print and then stencilling over the top. The die cut this time is cut from another mono print where real leaves were used on the gel plate.

The recipients name could be written in the heart instead of using a gift tag.

By using different parts of gel print you can achieve a nice variance in the colours but they all co-ordinate and the new Fresco colours are so pretty together.

A bit of glitter card is another favourite thing of mine to use at Christmas and some wrinkled seam binding too.

Christmas makes are always my favourites although they are also the hardest makes to fit in at such a busy time of year so I'm glad I've made a start. My colour scheme is set with some of the beautiful new colours in Fresco range and the beautiful stamps and stencils from Kay help to get quick results. I've die cut lots of silver glitter holly for the rest of my tags and bags and I hope you'll join us in the topic!

Thanks for joining me today and I hope you have some creative time this week.

NEW: Kay Carley Stamps {with Jenny Marples}

September 2019 New Products
Eclectica³ Collection {Kay Carley}

Loving the brayered background Jenny has cleverly created for this post, it almost looks dry-brushed the effect is so perfectly frosty! Brilliant to set off these lovely new stamps by Kay!

These stamps were announced on the blog yesterday, and we have been shipping them to our stockists for the past 2 weeks ready for you to snap up! So to find a stockist near you, check out the foot of this post here. ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, it's Jenny Marples with you today sharing some Christmas cards made with Kay Carley's brand new releases. There is so much to love about Kay's new designs; there's the hand drawn style with images that are perfect for colouring in, the wonderful sentiments that will work across all three sets, the coordinating stencils that give you the option for adding texture and shading, and the sizes of the stamps which will work equally well on cards, tags, journal pages and even your own handmade wrapping paper.

I opted to make a set of Christmas cards and began by creating a background for them all by brayering White Fire, Venice Blue, Cloud 9 and Seaglass Fresco Finish paints onto a 12 inch square piece of PaperArtsy Smoothy Card.

For this first one I stamped the holly branches from EKC32 over the background and coloured in the leaves, berries and stems with Glaze Gel Pens for a shiny, translucent look. The snowflakes come from the same stamp set and were embossed with white embossing powder.

In this close up you'll see that I stamped and cut around the words, combining ones from EKC32 and EKC33 to create a whole phrase.

For this next card I had fun combining the trees in set EKC31 with the coordinating stencil PS161. After stencilling Taupe Fresco Finish paint through the tree shapes and adding some white Gel Pen snow to the branches, I stamped the largest of the trees three time across the front. These ones were painted in Mushroom and Cloud 9 Fresco Finish Paint to make them stand out against the darker ones, and with more snow added, a wintry scene appeared.

After adding an embossed crescent moon into the night sky I stamped the present and bauble images from set EKC31 with London Bus and Lawn Fresco Finish paints, over-stamping them with black ink to add in the detail. As for the previous card I stamped the words from set EKC32, cut around them and added a little brown ink to the edges before popping it in place.

The third card combines set EKC33 with the coordinating stencil PS163. Cleverly, the stencil has been designed to allow you to miss a string or two of baubles in order to leave space to stamp the dangling tree, ball and star designs. I added a little glitter to the paste when stencilling them to add an extra twinkle.

The dangling ornaments were coloured with a combination of Lawn, White Fire and London Bus Fresco Finish paints, in keeping with the traditional seasonal colours. If you use a stamping platform you can stamp the image, add paint to it and then re-stamp over to reintroduce the detail. I also used a little smudged charcoal pencil to add shadows along one side of each dangling ornament to give them a little more dimension.The words were taken from the same stamp set and I added a little foam tape underneath them.

I had so much fun creating the scene in this final card, stamping and painting the two sizes of tree in set EKC31 using Taupe and Mushroom Fresco Finish paints. To stop them seeming to 'float' in mid air a little Koala Fresco Finish paint was added to the base of each and then drawn out to create the shadows on the ground. After lightly stamping the snowflakes a few dots of a coordinating Metallic Gel Pen were applied to coordinate with the background.

The snowman was painted with Cloud 9 Fresco Finish paint, with the Seaglass shade used to create shadows along the edges. His scarf and hat were painted with more London Bus and Lawn Fresco Finish paint and a white Gel Pen was used to add highlights to them. I used an orange Glaze Gel Pen to give his carrot nose some colour and shine. The words for this one came from the same set and you may just be able to pick up from the photo below that I used a little glue to apply thin lines of glitter onto the snowy ground.

Kay Carley's new Christmas designs are perfect for the festive season and I'm sure you'll have a ball making lots of things with them. And remember, stamps and stencils are not just for Christmas! You could try putting blossom or leaves on the trees to change the seasons and use the hearts for Valentines, wedding and anniversary cards. What other things can you think of? I'm sure there are lots more.

Thanks for joining me today, I hope you have a creative week.

NEW PaperArtsy Products: September 2019 {Kay Carley}

 Eclectica³ Collection {Kay Carley}
September 2019 New Product Announcement

A wonderful line of Christmas stamps and stencils certainly evoke a sense of a wintery Christmas! I love how Kay creates such great depth with branches, holly etc layered up with careful stenciling. And the addition of snow with snowflake paint dots is absolutely perfect! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, Kay here

I'm super excited to share with you my newest release for PaperArtsy consisting of 3 stamps and 3 coordinating stencils.

I really wanted to build on last years release so you will find a lovely big holly branch that is going to be super useful either as a stand alone stamp or to dangle things from such as all the new hanging ornaments from my new stamp set EKC33 as well as my baubles and snowflakes from last years release. I have also drawn a much larger version of my snowman from last year (that was scaled to fit inside the long bauble) - this one is a great size to either stamp on his own or to use in conjunction with the winter trees that are also part of this stamp set. As always I have tried to make all of the stamps as versatile as possible as you will see below!

Today and tomorrow you will see ideas with these stamps from myself and another of the Team PA Bloggers. You can also see plenty of activity on PaperArtsy's Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest. (links at the foot of this post) So no matter what your preferred social media platform, we will be sharing with you!

Let's check out these new beauties, some ideas from each set and a couple of projects.

  New Stamps
Price: RRP £18.74 +VAT
Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

Eclectica³ Kay Carley 31 (EKC31)

This stamp set contains a little bauble and present that have been sized to either dangle from the snowman's arms or from the large tree. I have drawn them with short hanging threads but it is super easy to make them longer by drawing them in with a black fineliner as I have done above with the present. You can also see that the large winter tree doubles up splendidly as overhead branches.

If clean and simple is your thing then just stamp the snowman by himself and add some tiny embossed snowflakes for a little bit of interest - the card above is 5"x5".

This is one of the main reason's why I opted to have the small bauble and tiny present as separate stamps. Not only do you have the option of having the snowman with or without them - you can use them to decorate the winter tree or indeed anything else!

Eclectica³ Kay Carley 32 (EKC32)

This holly branch has been sized to go with my bauble set from last year as well as the hanging ornaments from this years release. I had been wanting to do some holly snowflakes for the last couple of years so they made it onto this sheet as well - you can choose to dangle them (or not) from the holly branch too.

I purposely didn't draw the holly branch with 'snow on it' so that it can be used any way up - besides it is super easy to add your own snow just by dabbing on some Snowflake paint.

Eclectica³ Kay Carley 33 (EKC33)

Here's the hanging ornaments stamp set that I previously spoke about that has been designed to go with the holly branch but it is a stand alone set in it's own right. As you can see this allows you to create simple and quick cards but they look really effective.

It's always a quandary as a designer whether you should design stamps as a large stamp that contains several items or whether to have all the designs as individual stamps. Personally I think having the stamps as 'individuals' provides greater flexibility as you can vary the spacing and which stamps you use in conjunction with each other. I hope you agree!

New Stencils
Regular Size: 6.5" x 7" (16 x 18cm) Price: RRP £4.60 + VAT
Large Size: 6.25" x 9.5" (16 x 24cm) Price: RRP £5.40 +VAT

PaperArtsy Stencil 161 (PS161)

This stencil looks a bit strange so here is a little step out to show you what I had in mind! It was designed to allow you to quickly and easily add shading and colouring to the snowman as well as providing you with a stencil version of the large winter tree. Above I lightly stencilled dusky blue paint with a small domed stencil brush to create soft shading to the 'snow' areas of the snowman.

The funny little elements to the right of the tree image are so you can easily stencil through colour for the snowman's nose and hat band without risk of getting colour anywhere else.

Once you have done the hat band and nose you can then move onto doing the rest of the hat and scarf or you can do the hat first and then progress to the hat band - it really doesn't matter which way round you do it as each layer is protected.

The stencil tree image also doubles up to create wintery overhead branches.

PaperArtsy Stencil 162 (PS162)

I absolutely love this holly branch stencil as it makes it so easy to create holly branches that look as if you have painted them freehand! Although the large holly branch leaves are the same size as the stamp version this stencil doesn't perfectly match the corresponding stamp  - instead it has been designed to complement the stamp version.

On this stencil there is a triangle and a heart shape - these have been sized to match the hanging ornament tree and heart decorations from EKC33 so here is a little step out using a stamping platform to show you how to use them. Although I'm only showing the tree one here, the heart works in exactly the same way. Start by placing the card into the stamping platform. Ink the stamp and use the platform to stamp it into place - make sure you leave the stamp where it is and don't allow the card to move as you put the matching stencil over the tree image. Use the magnets to keep everything in place.

Use the stencil to mask off the rest of the card and then add your colour/colours to the tree.

As you can see, when you remove the stencil the opaque colours have hidden the stamped detail within the tree.

As long as you've been careful not to allow the card panel to move you can then simply stamp all the detail back in. Easy!

The final image with matching hanging chains!

PaperArtsy Stencil 163 (PS163)

This stencil is pretty self explanatory! It was designed to complement the hanging ornaments by providing a 'backdrop' of hanging chains.

Project One: Winter Wonderland

This large 8"x8" Christmas card shows how this release has been designed to mix and match together.

All three stencils have been used on this card and two of the stamp sets.

As you can see it is really easy to add 'snow to the trees just by dabbing Snowflake paint onto the branches. Once again that little bauble stamp was used to decorate the large tree.

I stamped the small winter trees without some of the trunk to sit them deeper into the snow and to make them different heights. The snowman was coloured using the matching stencil.

And here you can see how subtle interest has been achieved along the top of the card by using the hanging chain stencil along with the corresponding hanging chain stamp (from EKC33) Lastly the holly stencil is the finishing touch to add some needed colour and depth.

Project Two: Table Mat & Coaster

For this project I have used two stamp sets, two of the new stencils and one older stencil.

For years I have been meaning to decorate some wooden table mats and coasters for our Christmas table - one down, several to go!!

Having all of the hanging ornaments as separate stamps enables you to vary the height and spacing of the stamps to suit each individual project.

Above is a close up so you can see how I have added subtle stencilled layers into the background using the hanging chain stencil and the holly stencil.

And here is the finished result with matching coaster. This project is so much prettier in real life as it has been finished with Platinum and Crystal glitter glue highlights which add some super Christmas sparkle!

If anyone is interested in booking me to teach either of these two projects do please get in contact with me as I would love to hear from you. Meanwhile I do hope that this has provided some insight as to how I intended to use this release but I would love to see what you do too!

Kay xx
