Gwen Lafleur - July 2021 Stamp Release Samples Banner

A note from Leandra:
Wow, well these really are fun, and after seeing all the samples I am amazed with how Gwen offers so much insight into what is possible with them, if you are a fan of her boho style (and you should be) these are really going to allow you to do some serious creative exploration. Gwen really packs incredible detail within every single design, she works super-hard to create a wide offering every release - I hope you can appreciate that! She really is a fabulous, inspirational, creative soul
Don't forget we have Gwen sharing these stamps live in PaperArtsy People shortly after this post publishes. I hope you can join her to hear all about this new release, how she was inspired and how it fits with her existing stamps, either LIVE or on the replay.
Remember, these stamps are available EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists for the next 4 months. You can find a list at the bottom of this post.

Hi everyone, Gwen here...

I'm super excited to share with you my newest release for PaperArtsy which includes 3 stamp sets.

For this release I was inspired, as always, by an eclectic mix of ideas. But also per usual, there's a method to my madness! I've continued adding new elements that work beautifully with the tribal sets from my previous releases as well as a new set of "Gwenified" staple images, and a new concept for a stamp set that I'm super excited to share. Intrigued? Read on!

ATCs and Mixed Media Art with EGL19 Stamp Set by Gwen Lafleur

EGL19 is what I call my "Build-A-Collage - Birds" set; what I hope will be the first of many in this vein. The idea for this set is that you have all of the elements in a single set to, you guessed it, build your own collage!

All of the images are hand-drawn and the documents and antique French lotto card are also based on original antique books and ephemera from my collection. I also love the American Robin - it was coming on Spring in this part of the world when I drew this set and Robins were popping up everywhere!

Build-A-Collage Cut and Colored Images - Gwen Lafleur

For these projects, I spent a few hours stamping on a variety of papers, coloring with colored pencils, and cutting out the designs. But then when it came time to make the projects, I drew from my stash of pre-made pieces and whipped out three ATCs in a half an hour! That never happens and I love how they came out.

Collaged Bird ATCs with EGL19 - Gwen Lafleur

As you can see from the collaged ATCs in the photos above, the elements in this set have been perfectly sized for smaller projects like trading cards and coins, handmade cards and tags, or mini journals and scrapbooks.
Build-A-Collage Stamped Layers - Gwen Lafleur

I also wanted to show how you can use these stamps without stamping and fussy cutting on a separate sheet of paper. I love creating stamped projects using masks, so for this set I stamped each image on a sheet of copy paper and cut it out (I store these with my stamp sets for re-use later) and then used masks to show how you can create a layered design all on a single sheet of paper. I love this look just as much as the ATCs I shared above.

Stamped Floral Collage with Tribal Patches - Gwen Lafleur
EGL20 is the set I call "Tribal Patches." The hand-drawn images in this set were all inspired by different beaded and embroidered patches from Thailand, Central Asia, and reaching into the Banjara tribes in India. I love to use these beautiful patches in my work, but they can be quite thick and heavy. I thought it would be fabulous to have designs based on those patterns available as stamps to use in art journals, cards, and other paper-based work.

For this project I wanted to showcase how you can take these (or my other medallions stamps) and use them in an unexpected way; in this case to make a collaged flower arrangement. I love how the drawn details in the stamp versions emulate the beading and stitching on the patches that inspired them.

I also love how perfectly the stamps in this set pair with my previous "tribal" sets (EGL04, EGL09, and EGL15 as well as some of my stencils from StencilGirl.) They're also great for pairing with other medallions and circular motifs (like EGL01, EGL03, and my two Suzani sets as well.)

EGL21 Stamp Set - Stamped Labels by Gwen Lafleur
EGL21 is quite obviously my "Labels" stamp set. This is the latest addition to what I think of as my series of "Gwenified" basics (including EGL14 frames, the EGL16 alphabet and EGL17 tickets from my last release, and it also pairs beautifully with EGL19 from this release.)
EGL21 Stamp Set - Labels Collage - Gwen Lafleur

I created this mixed media collage (5" x 7") to show how you can make an entire piece using just the hand-drawn label and number images from this set - they aren't just for accents and don't necessarily need to be mixed with other designs! (Although I couldn't resist a few doodles in the background.)

EGL21 Stamp Set - Labels Collage Closeup - Gwen Lafleur

There are so many things I love about this set... first of all - it isn't just labels but a full set of very cool patterned numbers as well! I also added a block with Fig. 1-3 and No. 1-3 that you can cut apart into 6 stamps and then add to any of the labels as shown above - I thought it would be fun to combine them like you would see on a plate in a book of nature images.

Label Strip Samples with EGL21 - Gwen Lafleur

I couldn't help but do a LOT more playing to show the versatility of this set. So many ideas and options! I adore that strip of embellished tickets on the right in the photo above... made entirely with stamps from this set plus a few stickers. Just a few minutes and now I have a whole set of embellishments ready to add to future projects!

Then I thought... wouldn't it be fun to make another label strip, turn it sideways, and fold it into a teeny tiny book?

Handmade Number Label Tear Book - Gwen Lafleur

And while I'm making label embellishments for future projects... why not a whole BOOK of tear off number labels? There are six strips of numbered, colored, and perforated labels stapled together into a little booklet. Now whether or not I can bring myself to start tearing these off and using them is another story. Of course, I can always make more. #FunWithLabels.

Abstract Label Stamps Mini Journal Spread - Gwen Lafleur

Since I had already passed overkill level with the samples for this set, why not add one more? I used them in this mini art journal to show yet another level of versatility.

Here I wanted to show how they can be layered to create abstract patterns. And since we all now know how much I love a zero, I made little flowers out of the one in this set for embellishments. #MoreFunWithLabels.

Project #1: DIY Stickers / Jumbo Reinforcements

DIY Stamped Stickers Banner - Gwen Lafleur

Since there was so much interest in the oversized reinforcement stickers I made with my ticket stamps for my last release, I thought it would be fun to combine my latest three sets and show you how to make your own stamped stickers / reinforcements.

Ready to get started?

DIY Stamped Stickers Tutorial Step 1 - Gwen Lafleur

First I took a block of 1-1/2" circle stickers from a sheet of printable labels and applied some different colors of ink.

DIY Stamped Stickers Tutorial Step 2 - Gwen Lafleur

Next I used a light color of ink to stamp various larger images from the EGL19 and EGL20 all over the background - no worries about keeping within the borders of the stickers.

DIY Stamped Stickers Tutorial Step 3 - Gwen Lafleur

Then I pulled out two darker colors of ink and started to stamp slightly smaller images - these aren't the focal point yet, so I didn't want to go too dark or use anything that would really draw the eye.

DIY Stamped Stickers Tutorial Step 4 - Gwen Lafleur

For the final layer of stamping I used the images I wanted to be kind of the focus of the stickers and stamped those in black, paying a bit more attention to the borders so that the majority of my image would show on the sticker. You can eyeball it like I did for most of these, but then I also removed the sticker part around the circles so I could see better to add the last few.

DIY Stamped Stickers Tutorial Step 5 - Gwen Lafleur

This last step is optional, but this is how you turn your stickers into oversized reinforcements if you want them (I think they're really fun!) I used an old Making Memories grommet punch - about 1/2", and put a hole in the center by hammering lightly with the punch onto a self-healing mat. (This is also where it's super helpful to take off the outside sticker part so you can more easily find the center.)

DIY Stamped Stickers Tutorial Finished Project - Gwen Lafleur

I like to edge the stickers with a brown ink pad to frame them a bit. In the photo above I also wanted to show how you can use different colors and sizes of stickers for a different look - the white on black was especially fun since I love that contrast.

Project #2: Mixed Media Collage with DIY Stickers
Project #2: Collage with DIY Stickers Banner - Gwen Lafleur

Since going a bit overboard on samples for this release seemed to be the story, I thought it would be fun to add in a tutorial to show you how you can incorporate some of your DIY stickers into a mixed media collage. (And how simple it is to create a collage using the elements in these sets!)

Project #2: Collage with DIY Stickers Tutorial Step 1 - Gwen Lafleur

To start, I took one of the label stamps from EGL21 and repeated it on a piece of heavy card to create a tiled background.

Project #2: Collage with DIY Stickers Tutorial Step 2 - Gwen Lafleur

Next I took a contrasting color of ink and the repeating pattern background stamp from EGL19 (which, if you haven't noticed, is a tiny repeating version of one of the designs in EGL03) and masked off the label and stamped into the opening to create a pattern.

(If you want a more in depth tutorial on this type of masking, you can see the archived demo I did with Stampers Grove demonstrating how I stamp inside of my EGL14 frames stamps.)

Project #2: Collage with DIY Stickers Tutorial Step 3 - Gwen Lafleur

With the background done, I took out my little tin of pre-stamped and cut elements from EGL19 and layered them onto the background.

Project #2: Collage with DIY Stickers Tutorial Step 4 - Gwen Lafleur

Then I pulled out my DIY stickers from Project #1 and added some of those jumbo reinforcements into the collage. (I also added a bit of ink onto the edges of all of the elements.)

Project #2: Collage with DIY Stickers Tutorial Step 5 - Gwen Lafleur

I stamped a few of the patch images from EGL20 onto some painted collage paper and then pulled out a large flower sticker and one of my pre-stamped and cut labels from EGL21 and layered them on top to build a focal point. (I also added in a stamped tape measure from EGL19 to anchor the label to the edges.)

Project #2: Collage with DIY Stickers Tutorial Step 6 - Gwen Lafleur

To finish, I added some numbers from EGL21 onto the label and colored, then added some marks and framing with a black pen and reinforced the framing with brown and black ink pads.

Mixed Media Collage 1 with EGL19-21 Stamps and DIY Stickers - Gwen Lafleur

Above is the finished piece... I love how quick and easy it was to pull together using the stamps in these three sets!

Mixed Media Collage 2 with EGL19-21 Stamps and DIY Stickers - Gwen Lafleur

Just to show the versatility, I followed that same process again with different elements to make a second collage so that you can see how easy it is to mix it up and create different looks.

Whew! That was a LOT of samples... as you can see, I'm having a ton of fun with this new release and loving both the versatility and how they work on their own and together as a trio, but I'm also incredibly excited about how perfectly they tie in with my previous releases. And of course, I can't wait to see and learn from how all of you use them too!
