2018 #20 Foiling: Christmas with EEV & JoFY {by Jo Firth-Young}

 2018 Topic 20: Foiling

Jo creates some pretty speedy cards in this post, minimalist gel-prints allow the sparkly foil accents to pop. As ever, her contrast with wood/ kraft is there, and the obligatory teeeny tiny bling dots are there too! Perfect! ~ Leandra

Hi everyone, Jo Firth-Young (www.jofy.co.uk) with you today, and I'd like to share with you a few greeting cards I made featuring foiled motifs.  I went with a Christmas theme for this blog post (42 sleeps until the big day... just thought I'd mention that) but you could use the same technique for other motifs (eg. flowers, sentiments) and occasions.

I've teamed foiling with gel-printing - I like how the matte Fresco Finish paint contrasts against the shiny foil, and gel-prints have a nice 'toothy' finish that holds the inks used for the foiling.

All three cards I made are based on gel-printed backgrounds.  Each one uses Eclectica³ Ellen Vargo stamps from EEV02 & EEV06.  I used the stamps to lift paint off the plate rather than add. I like these stamps because the designs are a nice size but not solid/heavy and this creates a nice design on the gel-print.  I also kept the colours I used to a minimum - just two - Mermaid and Surf's Up. I really like how these prints came out - a nice base for foiling.

The foiling method I used for each card was basically the same.  I stamped the image using WOW! Embossing Ink and Bonding Powder and heated it until the powder had melted.

While the powder was still hot/warm from melting I added the foil (SHINY SIDE UP!) on top and rubbed gently (watch out for heat) and, when it was cool, gently peeled back the foil sheet to reveal the foiled design.

'Christmas' Card

I stamped, embossed and foiled distressed spots (EEV06) on to the gelli print using a fine sparkly foil (well it is Christmas - there has to be some sparkly on here somewhere!).

Foil can also be applied using double-sided-tape which is how I created the foiled strip on the top left hand corner of the card.

'Snow' Card

I photographed this card at an angle so the foiling can be seen catching the light - such a nice effect - as I said earlier I really like how it contrasts with the matte finish of the Fresco paints.

The foiled star used on this card is from JOFY70 - the foil catches all the detail.

'Joy' card

This gel-print has an ombre background using the same colours and stamps as before.  The foiled snowflakes are JOFY48.

I also foiled a wood embellishment - adding the ink and bonding powder as before.  The wood needed a bit more powder and heating than when I worked on card - but I like the slightly distressed look that was created.

I really like the effect of foiling on top of a painted background... and using gelli prints is a nice way to combine several techniques. Hands up who has lots of gelli prints laying around???

Adding foiling could be a great way to use them up and create lovely cards.  On these cards I only
used Silver and Sparkly Silver but there are other lovely foils available in a full rainbow of colours - check your local craft shops.

Happy foiling!!
