Scrapcosy Vintage Postcards with Alison Bomber
Tonight
we have another take on how to use Raquel's gorgeous stamps and
stencils by Alison Bomber. The watercolour effects employed by Alison to
add colour are super effective, and what do you prefer, brown or black
ink? Controversial! Read on....
But first, here's a reminder of Raquel's new stamps and coordinating stencils.
But first, here's a reminder of Raquel's new stamps and coordinating stencils.
Hi everyone, Alison here from Words and Pictures.
It's
an absolute delight to be with you this evening as one of Raquel's
wingmen for these new Scrapcosy stamps. You probably already know I'm a
vintage fan, and I love intricate stamps with a touch of history about
them, so these images are right up my street.
You've
already heard from Raquel and from Jennie, so I'm mainly focusing on
the third of the three new stamp sets. ESC06 has a definite Halloween
twist, though there are plenty of ways to use these throughout the rest
of the year too. But as I was playing I couldn't resist experimenting
with the others too, so I've ended up with a lovely set of vintage
postcards suitable for several seasons.
Let's take a proper look at the Halloween pair first. There's a reason these come in twos. I almost never stamp in black... I
almost always reach for the browns first of all. But since the
Scrapcosy images are like something straight out of a botanical
dictionary or nature reference book, I thought I really should try them
in black, as they would have been printed originally.
But
then I thought, "Well, in that case, why not do a direct comparison of
how they look in black and in brown?" And so I did. And you know
what... I'm still not sure which I prefer! I
do like the definition and clarity of the black stamping (Archival Jet
Black), and how it definitely has the feel of a vintage illustration.
But I also really love the more faded sepia look (Archival Coffee) - a gentler, more aged look, I think. Either way, the detail and clarity in these stamps is completely stunning. They're just fabulous to stamp with, as PaperArtsy stamps always are.
I stamped and painted the pumpkins separately, before cutting them out and gluing them in place. I did a little bit of shaping from the reverse side so that they are slightly three-dimensional.
Scary spider, whether he's in black or brown!
The skeleton is holding on to the advertising banner, curved into his hands for an extra touch of dimension.
And I just adore these gnarled roots/branches - they'll work for either. In the background, I did some resist text stamping with clear embossing powder... I love how it just tickles the eye with the extra detail.
I
cut my "postcards" from watercolour paper, and I used watercolour
paints to "colour them in". You'll notice I've taken an unusual (for
me) leap into pink! Here are the roses before any ageing/distressing...
And
over that I blended some Pumice Stone Distress Ink to give me a more
vintage look, splattering it with water for extra wear and tear.
Can I just say - this text stamp is beyond beautiful. Again, brown or black... either way!
Can I just say - this text stamp is beyond beautiful. Again, brown or black... either way!
Finally, here's an autumnal pairing using the wonderful botanical fungi illustrations from ESC05 (and the text stamp from ESC04 in the background).
Simply in love with the detail of this specimen...
I really love the oak branch with the shiny acorn too.
And of course that spider from ESC06 works really well in the undergrowth too. With all three pairs, I added darker tones of Walnut Stain around the edges.
What I love about using the watercolours is that once they are dry they are permanent. You can apply the inks over the top without any danger that your carefully coloured illustrations will be affected. So you can distress and splatter with water, and that top layer won't ruin all the hard work underneath. You can do the same thing with PaperArtsy Fresco paints too, of course - but I didn't have them all with me!
It's
been a joy and an honour to play with these gorgeous stamps. They're
already featuring in my traveller's journal too, as well as on tags, and
I can see so many more possibilities too. I also know that there are
some of Raquel's new stencils on their way to me here in New York, so
I'm very much looking forward to playing with those. Keep an eye out
over at Words and Pictures to see those in action very soon!
Thanks so much for stopping by today, and I'll see you again sooner than you might think!

Beautiful Alison!! I don't know what to pick either, if black or brown ink! Black for the mushroom but brown for the roses maybe... It's great seeing then side by side. They are lovely projects!! And I love how you coloured all the images! The banner hold by the skeleton is such a great idea! :) Thanks very much for sharing all these and for helping with the release!! :)
A gorgeous array of postcards Alison beautifully designed and wonderfully and so delicately coloured. Yes ... not too sure about black or brown myself either ! Great to see them side by side though. A wonderfull collection x
I nearly always stamp in black, but know that you love your browns- both versions look fabulous!!
These are all just gorgeous Alison, such amazing detail and I couldn't choose between black and brown as they're equally fabulous.
Fliss xx
The brown has more of a Vintage look and black is starker... just depends on the style you want to communicate. Both are good, the samples are fantastic Alison!
Absolutely beautiful work Alison. Lx
Oh my! I love both versions of all of these although I think I do prefer the roses using the brown ink! You have made some truly beautiful examples ! Chrisx

This post is an absolute delight Alison! The stamps are wonderful and I love that you showed a comparison between the back and brown. The skeleton has just gone on my wish list - I love how he is holding the banner and your watercoloured elements on the postcards are beautiful. xx

Dear Alison, snapping for air when seeing them all- I love your experiment with the black contra brown inks, and think, too, that the black, really looks like a very old illustration i a magazine. The flower invitations are so beautiful, and oh do I also love your fungi and oak piece- stunning creations all.
Hugs, Dorthe

Wow, what a wonderful collection of samples Alison. Love them. Xx
OK, that's it! I NEED every single one of these sets! Alison has done an amazing job using both of the ink tones, but I prefer the black on the Halloween cards, and brown on the beautiful rose cards. Jury is out on the schrooms. All just lovely works of art colored by such a talented artist! You couldn't have picked a better one to show off these new collections!
Enchanting card using Raquel's new stamps with watercolor paint. Beautiful vintage colours and great composition. I love them. I'm always guessing about which to choose black or brown ink too. xx
These are absolutely glorious, Alison! I adore this whole range of stamps and want them even more now.
