2015 Theme 1: Fragile Papers
Hello
everyone! Kate here, joining you this evening with a post about fragile papers. One
reason I love working with old books and torn book pages is because I
love reading. To me, art is about incorporating the things I love to
make something that I can enjoy on a daily basis. Today I will be
sharing a layout in my altered book that has a vintage circus theme.
Step One.
I
started off by gathering my supplies. I used patterned paper scraps,
Fresco Finish Paints, torn book pages, gesso, PaperArtsy Stamps and a
book.
Step Two.
I
covered the book pages with a light coat of gesso. I glued strips of
book paper and patterned paper onto the background.
Step Three.
I
used a palette knife to add some more gesso over the paper strips and
allowed the gesso to dry. I then used Guacamole and Orchid and
sprayed water over the paint to allow drips down the page.
Step Four.
Using
my PaperArtsy Stamps, HP1306 I stamped the background.

Step Five.
After
the paint dried, I used a stencil with Distress Ink and Grunge Paste
to add extra texture.
Step Six.
Lastly,
I sprayed more ink to highlight the Grunge Paste and I glued my focal
images from LPC 003 and embellishments in place.

Before you throw those old,
torn books in the trash, I encourage you to save them for altering or
for the pages. It is amazing what a coat of gesso and some paints can
do to revive an old book and make it into a work of art. I found this
to be a great project to help me get over my intimidation of altered
books.
What a great page Kate, a fabulous mash up of grungy and pretty. Those paints are so fresh against the gesso. Totally fabulous layering! Thanks for sharing your foray into the world of altered books.
We would love you to join in with challenge #1: Fragile Papers. If you are inspired by any of our guests who have blogged on this topic over this fortnight, then please join in and link up your creativity HERE.

Just love these pages. Steps are really clear too. Love, love the drippage!
Great to see you back Kate, loving this pretty yet grungy journal composition.
Lovely layers of papers and paints, fabulous page!
Oh I really love this Kate. I saw a book used the other day with stencils, paint and a bit of spraying, and lots of white space. Your post reminds me how the same thing can go easily in totally different directions. Love how it pops off the page. I must do a version of this. Thankyou!

Gorgeous Kate! So much texture and layers
This is wonderful, quite unlike anything I have seen. I have these stamps and I love how you have emphasized the circus theme in your choice of images which is such a clever thing to do,

Gorgeous pages with pretty colours and lots of texture. Really loving all these old books and pages being given a new lease of life instead of going to the scrap heap.
