We have a small and perfectly formed release from Lynne of 2 stamps, and they are absolute delightful! As you will discover, love is in the air .... Hummmm that tune to yourself as you find out the inspiration behind these designs ....

Design Notes
HEART Collection by Lynne Perrella

For me, romance never goes out of style.   I’m a proponent of that song lyric by The Pretenders:  “When love walks in the room – Everybody stand up!”.  

When I designed this NEW collection for PaperArtsy, I had tender-hearted lyrics swirling in my head; and naturally I thought of love letters tied with ribbons, lovely bouquets of flowers, and heart motifs on absolutely everything.  

Illustrations with a contemporary style were perfect for this theme, and the characters trade fond glances and romantic secrets.

Hearts:  They’re not just for Valentine’s Day!  I love to include lavish patterns into my designs and there is nothing quite like some romantic squiggles with a dip pen.  The loops of mythic hand writing are a perfect mate for the decorative scrolls and flourishes in these detailed drawings……..and a Queen of Hearts is fully costumed in a regal gown, ruffled collar, and crown.   Her sceptre is festooned with cascading ribbons, and is decorated with (what else?) love notes.  (and she has a King of Hearts too – an artsy fellow wrapped in his cozy sitting room attire, perhaps ready to pen some billet doux?)

Bouquets are lovely, regardless of season – and this cunning floral tribute is wrapped in intriguing paper, ready to present with “love”.

I pulled out some of my own family photos for these tabletop tableaus, and here is my beautiful Mom dressed for a party.  She loved flowers – receiving them, and growing them.

Toy theaters are an enduring fascination with me – and they evoke romantic melodramas, winter nights-at-home, and layers of drapery details and tassels.  A romantic face takes center stage, ready to narrate the tale.

Try stamping the image, cut away the face portion, and use the highly-decorative stage as a border, or gift tag, or book plate.   Or, audition different papers inside the opening of the proscenium.  It’s endless.

Utter simplicity! – a sentimental face, a handful of blooms, a scrap of hand-writing, and a heart.  This contemporary design has an old-fashioned vibe, and could be used in dozens of ways.  She’d be a perfect beginning for a charming paper art doll, or stamped on a book mark, or imprinted repeatedly to form a “garden” of female beauty.

Designing this HEART collection was a timely reminder to me:

“What the world needs now is love, sweet love.” 

When a new collection is complete, I like to “audition” the images and surround them with fun artifacts from the drawers in my studio.

This was extra fun when I added old, well-loved photos of my family……including a special wedding photo from 1910 and other soft-hearted images.

Heartfelt

These samples are a lot bigger than you might think. I really enjoyed playing around with arranging the layers, and I didn;t want to hide the details, so the samples kind of grew!

These valentines are smitten with each other!

I just love the flowers ... blooming marvellous hair indeed! I went back to watch Kate Crane's tutorial with infusions colouring (Kate Crane - colouring with infusions) and taking stencil prints from infusions too (Kate Crane - Stencil printing with infusions), over in PaperArtsy People in the Kate Crane Guide. That is how I built up the colours in these samples with Magenta, Sleight Blue and Golden Sands infusions.

 

The stamping in the background is from Seth's most recent minis, ncie to add some extra texture!.

Abstract Number Heart 

The numbers stencils is one of Tracy's and wow, the background turned out so cool. 

 

 

I really enjoy adding colour to faces, especially unexpected colours, I did audition her on a different background. It can be a lot of fun playing around with the layers!

Love Tendrils

This is quite a wide sample, and I love the frame stamped with the edge of another image to create a fun, abstracted design.And I just love how the stencil print turned out ...not quite sure how i managed to not get a frame, instead a beautiful blobby area! Perfect.

There are always some extr stamps you can use for embellishments, and this heart is super nice.

The Background stencil is the 'kisses' by Nicci Battilana, very appropriate! I love those hearts on her cheeks, but as I was focussed on adding colour elsewhere, I left the cheeks B&W

 

Love Notes

Someone is being treated to a bunch of flowers!

 

Hooray!

Another one that was auditioned on various backgrounds, before I comitted to the number stencil above! But she also looked cute laid on the black strip from the sample above!

And she looks pretty happy!

Dounia also made some samples with these designs, so it is nice for you to see another crafter's ideas!

Queen of Hearts

I doubt very much you would remember 'Queenie' from the Blackadder TV series in the late 1980's .... well this surely is a doppleganger for her , I think its the hair...

The Queen of Hearts has to have a red backdrop, and I love how the heart stamped in white on that layer looks

And again, all thedetails within the stamp are cut out and layered up by Dounia, which accentuates the design.

The Prof

There are 2 large stamps, the Queen of Hearts and her man, who looks like a professor of love to me with his heart embellished clothes and his glasses .... 

This little love rosette is off the hat of one of the other designs in LPC072, and makes a wonderful additional embellishment

Plentyto colour in here within his magnificent costume.

Shake it up

In this sample dounial added to the dress by turning the bouquet of flowrs into a skirt

A note from Leandra ...

It is always an exciting event when a new designer joins the team, and super interesting to see how other people interpret them. With that in mind, I invited Keren Baker to create with Kate's new stamps. I love to see how the same stamps can be used so differently, depending on a person's individual creative style. How might you put your twist on these stamps??

Like Kate, Keren loves bright colours, but she often uses white space to good effect too, and she often 'sees' stamps in unexpected ways ... so after the lovely blast of inspiration from Kate yesterday - here is more from Keren with her twist.

I was delighted to be sent some of Kate's delicious designs and get the chance to play with them. I love the unique images that she's designed and curated and I know that you'll love creating with them too. I was tasked with creating some cards & projects as you read through this post, you will see which products I have used, the samples are below the stamp images.

Let's start with the minis ....

Kate Crane Red Rubber Mini Stamps

Price: RRP €4.90 +VAT 

Size: generally credit card (ish) size images

All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam

Kate Crane Mini 001 (code: KCM001)

The minis are so versatile and this is one of my favourites. This gives an idea of how you can use it both as a texture filler and also as a background stamp.

I used Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics for the background, watered down to paint the girl and also through the stencil which is one of Kate's- PS427.

This size of image works so well on the blank coaster that I used. I edged it with more paints and sealed it with Modge Podge Matte so it's fully functional too! You can also spy one of the images from KC005 in the background.

Kate Crane Mini 003 (code: KCM003)

Arty Party

I've combined this lovely mini with KCM006, KCM007 and the A5 set KC003. I loved the 'arty party' sentiment and it struck me that this set looked a little like balloons- so that was the springboard for designing this card.

You can see the sentiment and also the bubbles from the KC003 set.

The bubble balloons were fun and if you trim cardstock really thinly it becomes wavy, just like seaweed and reeds.

Kate Crane Mini 007 (code: KCM007)

Beauty

Fish with legs? This was a happy accident. I was playing with Mattints (which you HAVE to try). Granted- this is not how you'd normally use them, but I wanted to see how they'd behave. You can see the drips below. The cardstock wasn't slick enough for them to keep dripping, so I tapped the cardstock panel and the drips all went to the right- but then- they looked like legs!

Keep on Swimming

The substrate was really cheap from a UK store called The Works and the wood took the Mattints (like a stain) so beautifully. I stamped on it using Stazon in different colours and painted using Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics. Over all the projects I used Haystack, London Bus, Cerise, Sargasso, Aquamarine and China.

 

To get the bottom of the sea plants, I used PaperArtsy Printed tissue paper, glued down and then added Dragonfly, Fern and Shark (an entirely appropriate name ;-) Mattints !).

You can see the sentiment & bubbles from KC003 (which is where the whale/sharks are from) and how the tissue paper gives some fun depth to the piece. Keen eyes will also spot the mini KCM001 in the centre of the fish.

Kate Crane Stamp Set 001 (KC001)

NAME OF SAMPLE

The rabbits in this set are wonderfully quirky. One of the images in the set could be a leafy plant but I saw 'wings'. I ended up using the other rabbit's ears as wings and stamped some of the other images onto them.

You can see the acetate wings and I've painted some of them on the reverse too. If you're a fan of other colouring mediums, you'll love these sets as Kate has a real eye for detail and so there's plenty to add colour to.

The sentiments are fab and you can chop them up to pepper around your projects.

Kate Crane Stamp Set 002 (KC002)

Within

We all see images in different ways, and as I looked at the collars and headwear on the girls, I just saw fruit! The background used Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics, the PS427 stencil that I put Grunge Paste through and stamped over using the KCM001 mini.

Isn't the sentiment just perfect! Less perfect is my addition of alcohol pen on the faces- I'm claiming the defence of - 'it was night time and I wasn't concentrating!'

Kate Crane Stamp Set 003 (KC003)

Yours is Mine

Kate's images are a lot of fun and this set is no exception. I began by adding Grunge Paste through the PS429 stencil. It reminded me of a glitter ball so I added glitter to the wet Grunge Paste. 

I stamped and coloured this fish, adding a heart from one of the other fish in the set. I used the thin curled cardstock trick again and called the card finished. You might have noticed that some of the colouring looks almost like watercolours- that's the beauty of the Fresco Finish paints, they're so pigmented that even watered down, you still get wonderful colours.

Kate Crane Stamp Set 004 (KC004)

HeArt Art

When I bought the fish plaque, I also got this mini easel. The coated canvas made for better Mattints drippage and was just the right size for the KC004 image of a house on a hill. 

I coloured this with Prismacolor pencils and added the clever sentiment. A tiny project with a big impact.
