2020 #13 Lines: Mother of Pearl Tags with ZinskiArt {by Jenny Marples}

2020 Topic 13: Lines

Cool chickens need fine houses, and certainly these Zinksi dwellings complete with chickens are pretty perfect partners! Jenny has created a cool new technique that she explains in great detail. Lots of lovely lines highlighted so cleverly with ink too.
~ Keren

Hi everyone, it's Jenny (Pushing The Right Buttons) here today, and I'd like to share with you two large tags. They feature collaged images from two Zinski Art stamp sets that have been mounted on 'faux' Mother of Pearl backgrounds which incorporate both textural and visible lines to fit with the current theme.

That faux Mother of Pearl backgrounds was one of those 'happy accidents' that worked out so well I've put together a tutorial below to show you (and remind me!) how to achieve it in future. Let's get started.

The base paper for the tags was created by using layers of Seaglass, Waterfall and Calypso Fresco Finish Paint on a Gel Plate, pulling the resultant print on a piece of discarded brown wrapping paper. This was then glued onto four large tags.

You can see above how after 'Snowball' Izink ICE was applied over the painted paper lines were scored into the gel using a thin embossing tool.

I gave each of the four tags a different look using 'Thundercloud', 'Olive Drab', 'Cotton Candy' and 'Atlantis' Izink Pigment Inks, working them into the scored lines to make them stand out.

Above you can see the results of more play time with a 3x5 inch Gel Plate and some beautiful pastel shades of Fresco Finish Paints. I pulled the prints using tissue paper to create delicate layers.

I used a stamp platform to add the images from Zinski Art stamp set ZA40 onto pieces of the painted tissue, painting in some of the elements with the same paints before re-stamping to add back in the details. The various parts were then cut out and applied onto white card using collage medium.

At this point the plan was to put one of the houses on each of the four coloured tags but they looked a little lost on such big tags so I had a re-think and decided to use two houses on two of the tags. The backgrounds also seemed over-powering against the delicate collage houses so I applied layers of 'Cotton Candy', 'Olive Drab' and 'Stratosphere' Izink Pigment Inks on top ending with 'Opal Frost' Ink to give it back that shine, and, as it happens the look of Mother of Pearl!

Above you can see those scorelines through the gel, framed with some faux stitched lines using a tracing wheel and black gel pen.

After much deliberation I decided to keep things 'simple' by creating more collage elements to combine with the houses. These included little chickens from Zinski Art stamp set ZA57 and flowers from set ZA40.

You can see from the close ups of the finished tags above and below how the houses were mounted on the tag backgrounds using some dimensional tape. The chickens were glued onto them and the flowers flat onto the tags, chopping them along the edges to make them go further. A simple sentiment was added to each tag with the intention that they could be used in place of cards sometime in the future.

I hope you've enjoyed the tutorial and like the finished tags. As well as enjoying making those backgrounds I loved how all the Zinski Art images lent themselves so perfectly to collaging. Painting in the tinier details rather than attempting to cut each and ever part out by hand definitely saved time and effort. And surely the little chickens from the newest stamp set were made to go with those houses? If you haven't had fun combining them yourselves yet you'll find they are the perfect partners.

Thanks so much for stopping by.
Jenny

NEW PaperArtsy Products: Zinski Art {May 2020}

 ZinskiArt Collection
May 2020 New Product Announcement

A note from Leandra:
We never quite know what Elena will come up with next, but I have a sneaking suspicion these little chicks were born from many of the stories Lauren shares about her own chickens and their adventures in her garden. I knew that Lauren would bring them to life in full colours, as she is so good at doing, and having her own coop of girls, she observes the at home antics, but with her wild imagination, I am sure she would love to see her chickens dancing, doing the high-wire trapeze acts, and perhaps even sharing a few gins in the sun!

Hello lovely peoples, Elena here - facebook.com/elena.guzinska.art

To make sure you are all keeping well I would like to send you all some happy's so let me introduce you to the chicken family who are here to give you lots of smiles and chuck..chuck..chuckles, see what i did there?!. haha

I love all animals so adding to the zinski zoo is just a joy and chickens have that big fat shape where they're begging to be coloured in bright colours of the rainbow and made the focus point on a journal page or stamped onto a piece of plain fabric and hung proudly in the kitchen. These chica's each have their own individual personality, what will you name them?! Our lovely Lauren is always sure to inspire you, so carry on scrolling to enter the world of Zinski and Hatwell ... ZinkWell if you will :)

If you want to buy these stamps, they are available EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists for the next 6 months. PaperArtsy do not compete with our retailers, so if you want to get your hands on them, check out the stockist list at the bottom of this post!

Let's check out these new stamps, some ideas from each set and a couple of projects.

 New Stamps
Price: RRP £18.74 +VAT
Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

Zinski Art Set 56 (ZA56)

Well if you like your chickens crazy then this is the place to be! They can be any colour you like and  they are just in the BEST poses for adding much needed fun and humour to all manner of projects. It was great to use the fabulous JoFY "egg" flower with this one as well as a few smaller eggs and chickies I pulled from previous ZinskiArt releases.

Zinski Art 57 (ZA57)

Stacking chickies! How cool is that for goodness sake!? This large chicken from the set is one of my favourites and she just keeps popping up in my samples. She's a great size so she can carry her other chickie friends around on her back and, as you will see, she is great for assemblage type projects too.

Zinski Art 58 (ZA58)

Seriously! How great are these crazy chickens!? They are brilliant for every kind of hilarious scenario - yoga, dancing, exercising - you name it. In the end I went for a kind of chickie trapeze theme. They are an absolute must have item, surely!

Project One: Chicks on Sticks! Assemblage

I do actually keep chickens myself, and I can see my own chickens from my Craft Room window so this kind of assemblage project is right up my street and definitely something I would want on my desk.  I had to have the large chickie from ZA57 and the cute little waving chickie from ZA56 . I don't like to use the word "favourite" here, but, well, I do like them ever so much. The "Best Hens Forever" sentiment is perfect for the job and you'll see I managed to pull in a couple of gorgeous elements from ETS11 by Tracy Scott too. Winner! Winner! miscellaneous white meat dinner!! (we don't use the word "chicken" in the same sentence as "dinner" in my house for obvious reasons... LOL)

First, I sorted out my colours. This is one of my favourite bits of any project.  I've used these colours throughout, though I have switched mediums from time to time, this is pretty much my standard kit. Pencils ALWAYS feature! They are so useful for adding additional shading and extra detail.

I picked two additional colours, Lawn and Aquamarine for the base of my assemblage, coated the block of wood (this is just an off-cut I had in my shed) with Aquamarine, followed by a coat of Lawn when the first coat was dry. Once both coats were good and dry I sanded  the topcoat back lightly so you could see the blue through the green. I'll be honest, I wish I had sanded a bit more as the effect is a little more subtle than I really wanted....such is life! In the end I decided not to paint the cotton reels as I just thought they looked nicer like that.

Next I coloured all my images (I'm trying to preserve my Fresco Finish Paints a bit while there are some restrictions so I used Prima Watercolours (Classics and Tropical) with my pencils and Fresco's, and I added some really nice Tracy Scott flowers from ETS11. I tend to stamp everything out on sheets of Heavy Smoothy ready to cut out and pull together into various projects.

And finally the fun bit! Assemble everything on some cut down skewers, painted with Lawn Fresco Finish Paint and glue into place (My favourite glue for this is Aleene's Tacky Glue. It sticks fast and holds everything nicely in place pretty much as soon as you place it down). Once you're happy with each stick glue onto the wooden base (I've used a hot glue gun for this as the pieces are relatively weighty and need to be stuck firmly straight away). As a final touch I added a little border from ETS11 again - just to hide the blobs of hot glue really - and a pull string made with Baker's Twine and a lovely oval silver bead from my stash to give the illusion that it could be pulled along.

Project Two: Let Me Hentertain You!

This time I've made a couple of journal pages using a mixture of chickies from all the stamp sets and mixing them with stamps from previous ZinskiArt releases along with some Tracy Scott flowers and borders. It's worth saying again how well they all work together and I  think that makes them so versatile.

I wanted to capture a bit of Elena's style but I'm not very good at doodling so I cheated and borrowed from two of the best doodlers I know - Elena herself, and Tracy Scott.

I only used a few additional stamps from ZA37, ZA40, ETS01 and ETS11 throughout, but I managed to create quite a few different combinations with them just by cutting different bits out, adding colour, or taking it away..

First I stamped and coloured all my images, as is my habit. Then, I cut them all out and arranged them roughly how I wanted them before deciding on borders. I tend to like to collage images but you could create this effect by masking if you wanted one layer. I used the centre of the largest Tracy Scott flower to make the sun and used one of Elena's wibbly circles from ZA14 to make the kooky clouds either side.

I extended the loopy border at the top of the "Best Hens Forever" page so that it filled the top line. It's nice to have a pattern to follow and it was fairly easy to extend it to the length I needed it to be using a Fine Posca Paint Pen.  I also used Elena's fantastic trick of putting together different shapes collaged over each other at various angles  all around the border. I'm no doodler but I can just about manage a hand drawn line and a few dots (ok, more than a few dots....but it does pull the borders together at least and it was SO therapeutic putting them in...LOL).

AND there's always room for a few quick cards...

Oh how I'd love to plug into Lauren's imagination as I'm sure all of you would too, she brings ideas I never would have thought of. For me seeing people create with something I've drawn is like that fun game where you write the first paragraph of a story and people add to it. Aren't we all so lucky to have this interest?! if we got the whole world crafting and arting the word 'bored' would become extinct! Stay safe you wonderful beings. Love Elena x
