2024 Topic 7: (Gel) Printing {by Mags Woodcock} on the PaperArtsy Blog

When I opened my most recent package from PaperArtsy HQ I was delighted to discover I had been sent one of the new Christmas stamp sets from Kate crane (KC007), along with one of her stencils (PS440). Also in the package were two bottles of Mattints, Dragonfly (MT07) and a mystery Mattint. I felt very privileged to receive this one before it's release. I couldn't wait to get started.

The blog topic Gel Printing was ideal for using these fabulous supplies. Today I have created 4 festive greetings cards let's take a closer look.

As the current theme on the blog is Nature I decided to create some backgrounds for my cards using my Gel plate and foliage from our garden. For the first background I used a few sprigs of conifer, I inked the foliage up with a black ink pad (Jet Black, Ranger, Archival) similar to how you would ink up a stamp. I pressed them firmly onto my gel plate to transfer the ink. When I was happy with the results I mixed some PaperArtsy Metallic Glaze (FF24) with an equal amount of  Dragonfly Mattint, brayered it onto the plate and then used heavy copy paper to pull a print. The benefit of this mixture is that it allows for a smooth coating on the gel plate and also gives a lovely twinkly look to the background. I repeated this technique several times using both Dragonfly Mattint, but also the mystery Mattint, Greenstone (MT09) which I received in my parcel.

Having created a few backgrounds using the conifer I wanted to try the sprigs of Yew I had picked. This called for a different approach to adding the black to the foliage. I soon found that brayering on some Fresco Finish Chalk acrylic in Little Black Dress (FF19) worked a treat, so again I created quite a few prints using the similar technique to before.

Having created some lovely botanical prints, I wanted to add a little more detail, so I added a little more definition where needed, using a black permanent fine-liner

It was now time to move on to using the fabulous Kate Crane stencil (PS440) I received in my parcel. Yet again I chose to use the Mattints mixed with the Metallic Glaze, but also some backgrounds using just the Glaze (to fit in with the white topic)

Having first brayered on the Mattint/Glaze mix to the plate, I laid the stencil on the gel plate and brushed on a further coat using a large brush and working from top to bottom. I pulled a print with the stencil in place, removed it and pulled a second print. Further prints followed to clean the plate of any remaining colour. As it happens I used one of those clean up prints in my finished cards. Nothing is ever wasted !

Remember that clean up print I mentioned ? Well I used the stencil placed on the top to mask off the background whilst I used the word stamps from Kate's stamp set (KC007) to add some interesting visual texture, followed by a fine-liner to mark out the stars.

I created plenty of prints so had lots to choose from when creating my cards.

It was now time to move on to creating the stamped images for the cards. I used PaperArtsy Smoothy card (SCA4)and Ranger, Archival, Jet Black ink pad. The colouring was easy using our mystery Mattint, Dragonfly Mattint and pure Metallic Glaze. I love the contrast between the matt and the sparkle that combination gave.

For the second two cards I wanted a flurry of snowmen, or should that be a drift of snowmen ? along with some of the lovely angels. I used the same techniques for adding colour.

Returning once more to my backgrounds, having cut panels to fit my card blanks, I stamped some of the words from the stamp set around the edges of the panels and added doodled borders to join them up. This created an interesting border for each scene.

For the snowmen I decided to stand them  amongst some snow drifts. When torn, the smoothy cardstock gives a lovely distressed edge similar to fallen snow, perfect for these cards.

You can also see how I used the word stamps to create a different greeting for the base of the card. The finishing touches were to add a little pop of colour to the angels and snowmen using a fine-liner.

So lets take another look at the finished cards.

2024 Topic 7: (Gel) Printing {by Mi Mii} on the PaperArtsy Blog

Hello everybody, it's Mi Mii (@themy32 ) with you today. I am very happy to be back on the blog for this Topic all about 'Printing'.

When discovering this topic, my first idea was to try my hand at ecoprinting. I thought this technique would work perfectly with the current theme 'Nature'. Being new to it, I did my research and learned a lot. It really is a exciting technique! One of the things I learned however is that it necessitates quite a bit of setting up and preparation before the actual printing. And I don't have that time!

So I switched to plan B: my trusty gel plate. Quite classic but still very satisfying and addictive!

A la découverte de ce sujet, une première idée me tente...réaliser des ecoprints, technique que je trouvais idéale pour le nouveau Thème "Nature". N'ayant aucune connaissance dans cette pratique, je fais quelques recherches sur le sujet et apprends beaucoup sur cette technique passionnante...seul hic, je manque cruellement de temps et faire ce type d'impression en demande beaucoup, car cela nécessite pas mal de préparation en amont. 

Du coup plan B ! je me rabat sur l'option gel plate. Certes plus classique mais tellement addictive et satisfaisante à faire !

I decided to make an mini accordion Art Journal. It is not easy to show it in its entirety as it is quite long!

J'ai décidé de créer un mini Art Journal avec une structure accordéon. Pas simple de vous le faire découvrir dans son intégralité car il est très long.

To create the backgrounds to decorate the pages of my Art Journal, my first step was a little walk along the paths of the Gersoise countryside to gather leaves, branches, and other various plants. Perfect for some 'Nature' inspiration!

C'est parti pour la création des fonds qui vont me servir à décorer les pages de mon Art Journal. Première étape, petite balade dans les chemins de ma campagne Gersoise pour collecter tout un tas de feuilles, branches et autres végétaux divers et variés. Parfait pour des fonds qui collent au thème "NATURE" du moment!

For some of my backgrounds, I want to achieve a cyanotype look (it is an old photographic process that from a monochrome negative, yields a print between Prussian blue and cyan). So I went mainly with blue shades. I made a little selection from my Fresco Finish paints collection: (FF68) space cadet, (FF67) Antarctic, (FF227) Rustic, (FF206) Blue Bayou, (FF199) Aqua Duck Egg et (FF85) Turquoise.

Je souhaite donner, à une partie de mes fonds, un aspect impression cyanotype (il s'agit d'un  procédé photographique ancien qui permet d'obtenir, à partir d'un monochrome négatif, un tirage bleu de Prusse à bleu cyan, sur un support photosensible). Du coup, je me suis orientée vers des teintes plutôt bleutées. J'ai fait une petite sélection dans mes acryliques Fresco Finish PaperArtsy : (FF68) space cadet, (FF67) Antarctic, (FF227) Rustic, (FF206) Blue Bayou, (FF199) Aqua Duck Egg et (FF85) Turquoise.

For focals on my pages, I chose those adorable critters from Elena ZinskiArt stamp sets ZA21 & ZA55. Aren't they cute? I am a big fan of their funky faces!

Pour illustrer les pages de mon Art Journal, j'ai sélectionné ces adorables petites "bestioles" PaperArtsy d'Elena Zinski Art (ZA21) (ZA55). Ne sont-ils pas craquants ?? Moi je suis fan de leurs bonnes bouilles rigolotes et décalées !

Let's get started! I was quite looking forward to a play session with my gel plate.

I started by brayering a thin layer of PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Aqua Duck Egg (FF199) on my gel plate. I positioned my thistles and took a print with copy paper to only keep a print of them in light blue. I then had to wait for this layer to dry...

Allez je me lance ! tellement hâte de jouer avec ma plaque de gel.

Je commence par étaler, à l'aide du brayer, une fine couche de peinture Paperartsy Fresco Finish Aqua Duck Egg (FF199) sur ma gel plate. Je viens y mettre ensuite, 3 chardons et je dépose une feuille de papier imprimante par dessus afin de retirer la peinture autour des chardons, ce qui permet de créer leur empreinte en bleu clair. Je laisse sécher.

When it was completely dry, I spread on the whole plate a layer of Fresco Finish Space Cadet (FF68) to lift my print. In the end, it is not the cyanotype effect I wanted but I still find the result interesting. So I kept doing it with the different leaves and plants I had collected.

Lorsque c'est bien sec, j'étale, sur la totalité de ma plaque d'impression, une couche de PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Space Cadet (FF68), afin de prélever mon impression, même si au final ce n'est pas vraiment l'effet cyanotype que je souhaitais, je trouve le rendu de ces chardons assez intéressant. Je procède de la même façon avec tout un tas de feuilles et végétaux collectés.

At the end of the gel printing session, I had a substantial quantity of printed papers. I love it. My stash will last quite some time! Some of the prints are amazing! I love the contrasts and details. I won't even dare to cut them up...

A la fin de ma session gel plate, j'obtiens une quantité conséquente, de papiers imprimés. J'adore !! Ma réserve n'est pas prête d'être épuisée ! lol ! Certaines impressions sont tops. J'aime les contrastes et les détails obtenus. Je ne vais même pas oser les découper !

 

For the journal, I went with a mini format. I used 3 pieces of Mixed Media paper of 36.5 x 9.5cm with folds at 11.5cm, 23cm then 34.5cm. The remaining 2 cm are a tab to glue the piece together in an accordion.

Pour la base de mon Art Journal, je suis partie sur un mini format. Je découpe 3 bandes de 36.5cm de long x 9.5cm de haut, dans un papier mix media. Je marque un premier pli à 11.5cm du bord gauche, puis à 23 cm et 34.5 cm. Les 2 cm restant vont me servir de patte pour assembler les 3 bandes entre elles en accordéon.

The covers for this mini album were cut out of an old book cover. I think recycling is another way to work in the 'Nature' theme. Giving a second life to already existing objects, or reusing some materials that would otherwise be trash, helps save the resources of our beautiful and fragile planet. Crafting is good for the planet basically!

Les cartonnettes des pages de garde de mon mini sont découpées dans la couverture d'un vieux livre, je recycle ! Le recyclage, une autre manière intéressante d'appréhender le thème Nature. En donnant une seconde vie aux objets déjà existants ou en détournant certains déchets de notre quotidien, nous économisons les ressources de notre si belle et si fragile planète bleue. Les loisirs créatifs sont pratique plus éco responsable en somme! 

My little trick for gel printing: I created my own printing blocs from things found in my workshop and kitchen: vegetable net, bubble wrap, pill packaging, wrapping paper, egg cartons or wood letters I was not using anymore... All this 'trash' create an amazing array of patterns and creatives possibilities.

Petite astuce pour la gel plate : je me suis créé un bloc d'impression uniquement de choses collectées dans mon atelier et dans ma cuisine. Filet de légumes, papier bulles, papiers et cartons d'emballage, plaquettes de médicaments vides, fonds de barquettes alimentaires, boites à œufs, lettres et chiffres bois que je n'utilisais plus...etc.  tous ces "déchets" offrent une quantité incroyable de motifs et de possibilités créatives.

I used my prints to collage on my pages. I torn them using a ruler to create a patchwork effect, mixing patterns and textures.

Je décore mes pages avec des bouts de mes papiers imprimés à la gel plate. Je les déchire à l'aide d'une règle afin de créer un patchwork de différents motifs et textures.

The most interesting prints get allocated bigger pieces!

Les impressions les plus intéressantes ont droit à des morceaux plus gros!

Time to add some dimension! I used PaperArtsy Mini Stencil (PM026) with Grunge Paste (GP190). As in most of my projects, I also added some stitching with a golden thread.

Il est temps d'apporter un peu de relief avec un mini Stencil chiffres PaperArtsy (PM026) et la grunge paste PaperArtsy (GP190). Comme dans la majeure partie de mes projets, j'ajoute également de la couture avec un fil doré.

And now for some stamps, just to ass even more interest on all my pages, and the covers! I chose this set by Elena Zinski Art (ZA08), which is full of pretty sentiment having to do with nature.

Un peu de tamponnage de fond sur toutes les pages et la couverture de mon mini Art Journal. J'ai choisi d'utiliser la planche d'Elena Zinski Art (ZA08), pleine de jolies petites phrases en rapport avec le thème nature.

Time for the focals: the cute critters from Elena Zinski Art sets ZA21 & ZA55 as well as zinis ZN17 & ZN18.

Il est temps de passer aux tamponnages de mes petits sujets. Ils sont vraiment trop mignons ces petits personnages d'Elena Zinski Art des planches ZA21 & ZA55 ainsi que les zinis ZN17 & ZN18.

I coloured then with alcohol markers. I kept to bright colours, inspired by the index sheets. I love the offbeat style of these little characters, so fun!

Une petite mise en couleur aux feutres à alcool. Je suis restée dans les tons peps de présentation des planches. J'aime beaucoup ce côté décalé des petits personnages d'Elena Zinski Art. Ils sont trop choux !

Here are some pictures of the different pages. I generally tried to keep the focals simple to show off the backgrounds.

Je vous met quelques photos des différentes pages qui composent ce mini. Je n'ai généralement ajouté que quelques créatures par page, pour ne pas trop cacher les fonds.

Several of my critters, like the lady bug, pop of the page and move. Boing!

Certains habitants de ce journal, comme la coccinelle, sont en relief et bougent. Boing!

I love the quotes. With a complex background, stamping them on white and framing them makes them pop!

J'adore les petites phrases. Comme le fond est texturé, le fond blanc avec un cadre fais ressortir les mots!

I used some second and third generation stamping to better incorporate the background stamping with the printed papers.

Pour mieux fondre mes tamponnages de fond avec mes papiers, j'ai utilisé la deuxième et troisième image.

I love the contrast between the rigid numbers and framed words with the more free and random patterns of the natural prints.

J'aime le contraste entre la régularité des chiffres et mots encadrés et le côté plus flou et aléatoire des impressions de végétaux.

Finally, the back cover is more simple, featuring mainly the date of this journal.

Finalement la quatrième de couverture est plus sobre, avec surtout la date de ce journal.

I hope you liked this project, I personally had so much fun making it.
