2020 #13 We grow great by Dreams with Tracy Scott Stamps {by Lynn Good}

2020 Topic 13: Lines

Lynn created a seamless contrast of hard and soft lines and a wonderful vertical line of stamped images that draw your eye through the wonderfully coloured piece.
~ Keren

Hi everyone, it's Lynn Good (Memories on the Page) with you today, and I'd like to share with you an art journal page that I have created for this week's topic - Lines.
My Interpretation of lines, well for this one, I have created butterfly images in a vertical line and there are manually added pen lines around the background leaves.

I had no idea what I was going to do but I had just received this gorgeous Tracy Scott stamp and wanted to use that, and I wanted to challenge myself and use some cool colours with the warm colours.  I am not a cool colour person but loved how this came out.

I first applied white gesso to the page, I often do this when I have no idea what the page is going to do and at least I have some 'tooth' to play with.  But I decided to apply Paper Artsy Paints - Gumboots and China with a make up sponge through Stencil PS123 - this created the leaves in the background.

I then stamped the butterfly image from Tracy Scott's stamp ETS39 onto tissue and adhered it to the page at the top and bottom in a line.  I was not fussy; a little ripped here and there but that was fine.

I then painted around the area of the butterfly in Snowflake Paper Artsy Paint to blend it all together.

I have used a black marker to roughly highlight around all the petals and stamped around the images with Tracy's mini stamp EM57 in black ink.

Now I was happy with the background - onto the focal point.  I have used the same stamp (ETS39) and stamped it onto Heavy Smoothy cardstock and fussy cut out.

Using Paper Artsy paints - Cherry Red, Coral, Yellow Submarine, Slimed, Orchid and Bubblegum I have coloured the image.

I have added highlights with coloured pencil - both fluorescent and plain.  I find the Paper Artsy Paints and coloured pencils (I used Prima Colour) blend beautifully.

Finally I added the title from Stamp ESN45 - again stamping on tissue and then adhering to the page. Here are some close ups:

+

I hope that you have enjoyed this process; one of my favourites, stamping onto tissue and when it doesn't come out right, that is fine, it blends to be part of the page.
Til next time - happy crafting.

Lynn

NEW PaperArtsy Products: Eclectica³ Sara Nauman {June 2020}

 Eclectica³ Collection {Sara Naumann}
June 2020 New Product Announcement

A note from Leandra:
I'm really, really loving this release by Sara. Delicate stencil patterns, excellent collage compositions, these are going to be so handy for card and journalling creative fun! Sara has some wonderful gel-printing ideas in this post too, so read on and perhaps you'll find out something new to tickle your creative tastebuds!

Hi everyone, Sara Naumann here with you today!

I'm super-happy to give you a look at my newest releases from PaperArtsy: Three new stamp sets, plus three matching stencils!

It's summertime here in Hamburg, Germany, which means one very important thing to magpies like me: The "Zu Verschenken" boxes set out on sidewalks, at the playground, perched on the recycling depot and even outside people's doors. These are giveaway boxes, often filled with old travel guides, well-used novels, outdated magazines and textbooks...all kinds of booky treasures that are free to anyone who wants to take them. They are a fabulous find for anyone who loves using text in their work, and perfect as the basis for collage stamps.

My June collection is a combination of snippets from some old textbooks I found in the neighborhood "Zu Verschenken" box, plus leaves collected from walks along the canal, paired with vintage postmarks from my stash, and of course a few quotes and words to finish things off. It's a collection, of sorts, of all kinds of found elements.

My hope—as always—is that these images provide you with plenty of versatility, so you can simply stamp and go, or mix and match and cut things apart to make your own collage pieces.

If you want to buy these stamps, they are available EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists for the next 6 months. We do not compete with our retailers, so if you want to get your hands on them, check out the list at the bottom of this post!

Let's check out these new stamps, some ideas from each set and a couple of projects.

  New Stamps
Price: RRP £18.74 +VAT
Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

Eclectica³ Sara Naumann Set 44 (ESN44)

I love a good tone-on-tone composition! Monoprinted Gelli Plate backgrounds (here, made with Aqua Duck Eggare a perfect surface for stamping and collaging. I cut out and clear-embossed the Dreamer circle, which could also be masked and layered for stamping directly onto the background.

Eclectica³ Sara Naumann Set 45 (ESN45)

This summer's collection has a dream theme to it—there's something about summertime that just feels slower, a time to relax the pace and let your imagination wander a bit. I love this sentiment, as it's such a gentle and encouraging statement and works for so many occasions.  (This is also a great sentiment to use as separate words—masking off with tape in order to stamp just "dream/s", "grow", "or "great".)

Eclectica³ Sara Naumann Set 46 (ESN46)

This leaf image is one of my all-time favourites. My neighbourhood is full of greenery, and I always have one eye on the ground for interesting leaves to pick up. (I feel especially lucky if I'm walking after my neighbours trim the foliage in their front gardens, and before the sidewalk cleaners come to sweep it all up.) This leaf is so simply and perfectly balanced that finding it made my whole day. It can be stamped in paint (as I've done here) or in crisp back ink for high contrast.

New Stencils
Regular Size: 6.5" x 7" (16 x 18cm) Price: RRP £4.60 + VAT

PaperArtsy Stencil 202 (PS202)

I love a stencil that that works as a comprehensive background element all on it's own—something so varied that you can simply pop a sentiment on top and have dimension and interest. Now that I look at it here, I can see where the inner areas of the Grunge Paste-d flowers would be perfect for filling in with paint... hmmm...

PaperArtsy Stencil 203 (PS203)

I love circles almost as much as I love leaves. They're simple, eye-catching and work beautifully as a background that doesn't detract from the main elements of your composition. Here I'm just using a portion of the design with Grunge Paste. Some of the GP is uncolored, straight out of the jar (I use my finger to apply it through the stencil); in the upper left though you can see where some of the GP has been tinted with a bit of Butter paint. The black spattering you see is watery black ink splattered on top of the dry stenciling; I love how it sits in and around the raised areas.

PaperArtsy Stencil 204 (PS204)

Postmarks are one of my all-time favourite elements to use in art—this stencil is an oversized postmark, which makes it perfect for reverse-stenciling as you can capture the "positive" part of the stencil as well as the "negative" space.

Project One: Wonder

I used the 6" Gelli Plate for all the projects you see in this blog post. I find the Fresco Finish paints work beautifully for monoprinting, as you can make a print, then easily re-apply another color on top for additional "pulls". You can also make marks in the wet paint on the Gelli Plate, as I've done with the Distress Splatter Brush. Let's have a go, shall we?

First I brayered Butter, Peachy Keen and Aqua Duck Egg onto the plate.

I dragged the Distress Splatter Brush through the wet paint to create texture. Quickly press with your cardstock on top, taking care to press and lift quickly. Leaving the paper in the paint will cause it to stick and rip.

When the monoprinted piece is dry, stencil the circles from PS203 with uncolored Grunge Paste. When that's dry, stamp the large leaf from ESN46, and the small leaf collage from ESN44 using Elephant paint. (Yes, you can stamp on top of Grunge Paste—I apply it with my finger, which means I can control the dimension.) Make a wash of Peachy Keen and spatter it all over the background.

For the middle section, I dirty-brayered leftover paint (looks like mostly Peachy Keen and some drabs of Aqua Duck Egg and Limelight) onto the Flowers stencil, PS202. Give it a quick mist of water and press with white cardstock for a reverse-stencil effect.

Project Two: We Grow Great By Dreams

This Gelli Plate painted piece has loads of colour, stamping, clear embossing, Grunge Paste and foiling... basically, all of my favourite techniques in one go!

First, create a monoprinted background by brayering Aqua Duck Egg onto a "dirty" plate. (This will give you the aqua as the dominant colour, with shades of whatever other colours you've used underneath.) Use a mark-making tool (here, I'm using the Distress Splatter Brush) to drag a pattern through some areas of the wet paint, then press with cardstock.

Make a second pass on your monoprinted piece: Splatter the Gelli Plate with watery Elephant paint. Mist the Gelli Plate and re-print with your original monoprinted paper.

When the background is dry, stamp the large leaf from ES46 with Aqua Duck Egg and Elephant. (I used the MISTI and stamp multiple times on one layer.) Stencil PS204 with Aqua Duck Egg, then add the smaller leaf collage from ESN44 on top, again with Aqua Duck Egg and Elephant. Add clear embossing powder to the wet paint and heat set.

I also added random Grunge Paste markings on the background. (I use the edge of an old hotel key card.) Apply silver foil directly onto the wet Grunge Paste, then let flatten under a book. After a few minutes, peel off the foil. Voila! Silver metallic shiny and Grunge Paste-y!

Finally, add some snippets of book paper, Grunge Paste stenciled with the PS204 stencil, plus a scrap of old book paper and some twine. Stamp the sentiment from ESN45 onto a scrap piece of monoprinted background paper. I've also stamped just the word "dream" from the large "wonder & dreaming" collage from ESN45.

Note: Monoprinting is a great way to knock up a ton of backgrounds in one session—I usually clear off my huge wooden table (this is not easy!) so I can have space for pieces to dry while I go on a monoprinting frenzy. Simply grab your paints and let the "dirty" paint add unintentional layers to your pieces... keeping in mind that you can always over-print on top of any prints you don't love. The resulting pieces are great for card backgrounds, art journal pages, tags, die-cutting and so much more.

A huge thanks for joining me today! I hope you enjoyed the projects and techniques, and found something that inspired you. As always, a big thanks to the PaperArtsy team who works so hard to bring us all top-quality supplies, and the retailers (see below) who keep us stocked!

PaperArtsy Stockist List

Please note many stockists worldwide have their physical stores impacted in different ways due to COVID-19. Many are operating online, are doing kerbside drops / collections, open by appointment only, or open with restrictions in place such as wearing a face covering, using hand santiser etc. Please contact a stockist direct to find out if you can visit them or not. Many are also using FB Live Streams to share with you new product arrivals, and also offering a personal shopping service via video calls.

Here at PaperArtsy, we are based in a rural location on the outskirts of London. We are open and manufacturing our products on-site (stamps, paints, stencils, infusions etc) as usual. UPS is collecting from us daily, and we are shipping worldwide to our stockists. The postal service is also still operational, albeit for only 4 short sessions per week, so we are also posting where applicable. We have less staff on site due to the compact nature of our workshop, so we are slower to deliver than usual. Our paint manufacturer has been closed since March, so we are out of stock on many colours, and no we don't know when that situation will ease. We're doing the best we can under the current circumstances. Thanks for your patience.
