2016 #21 Feeling Blue and Pink Too {by Claire Snowdon}

2016 Topic 21: Typography, Fonts, Quotes

Hi everyone Claire Snowdon here, joining you this evening with a post about typography. I love sentiments and like to use one on practically everything I make. One of my other favourite items to use on my projects is dictionary pages – so the topic of typography really jumped out at me.

My journal page uses a whole heap of typography ideas.

Step One: To start I gathered together a bunch of different papers with various fonts on and used these to create a collage in my square journal.

Step Two: I applied a very thin coat of white gesso using a spatula before adding light coats of Candy Floss, Turquoise and Chalk Fresco Finish paint as I wanted the collaged background to still be visible.

Step Three: I decided that is was looking a bit too bright so took out the infusions – I tried to add similar infusions colours over the areas of painted colours – so added Are You Cerise where the Candy Floss was and A Bit Jaded to the Turquoise areas. I added some stencilling using Chalk paint and a script TCW stencil – to give yet another typography element. I used elements from stamps sets ELB29 and ELB30 to add depth to the background – again using shades of blue and pink. On this page I used Archival ink in Cornflower Blue and Distress Ink in Picked Raspberry.

ELB30

Step Four: Then it was time to add the main images – I stamped them all using Black Archival. The main image of Lin’s lovely grasses was stamped twice and then white pen was used to highlight areas. The sentiments are from a range of Lin’s stamp plates: ELB02, ELB05, ELB15, ELB29 and ELB30. A couple of other little text stamps from EEA03 were also added.

Step Five: To add some contrast to the page I added two scalloped borders cut from old book pages and added a doodled border around them. And finally I edged my page with black ink to create a type of frame around it.

There are so many different things that typography can be used for and so many wonderful fonts that are available. A journal is a good format for trying out different fonts but typography ideas can be used on any substrate including tags, cards and many others. This topic is huge and there are so many ways to join in

Thanks for showing us your process Claire. So many different fonts, all working so well together. The washed out background layer really adds a great base and depth for the more prominent images and words. The scalloped border is a lovely finishing touch as the contract in colour makes it pop. ~Darcy
