Welcome Back Sue Carrington #1 Sewing Box ....

"For today’s project I decided on using the wooden pencil box, but I didn’t want to use it for pencils. I love to use sewing on my projects so have lots of reels of cotton with no home, until now" ! 

First of all I gave the box a coat of Ice Blue FrescoFinish, this is an opaque colour so coats the wood really well. 

I left the box to dry and then started to work on the metal panels that I wanted to cover the lower half of the box. I fell in love with metal after the first Artsycraft week end I attended! I’ve used a mould and placed the metal on top and first of all used a paper stump to start defining the pattern. 

After the paper stump I refined the pattern even further with a nylon tip tool, and this is what the pattern looks like when finished.

I then started to coat the metal with Fresco Finish starting with Sky Blue, then Baltic Blue and finishing with Little Black Dress. I dabbed off the excess in between each colour. 

This is what the metal looks like with all three colours applied. 

I then highlighted the edges of the box with Baltic Blue andInky Pool and I stuck the metal to the box using Humungo Killer adhesive tape.

I then started work on the panels for the top half of the box. I used Inky Pool and Beach Hut with some water and ‘swooshed’ the card through the paint, dried the card and then dabbed it back into the remaining paint on my craft sheet. 

I used the Hotpick 1214 set and stamped the hooks on the thin pieces of card which will go around the edge of the lid.

I then used the Ink and the Dog Mini 65 with Broken China Distress Ink on the top panel and then Mini 62 with Archival Black Ink, but I stamped it first on to a scrap piece of card before stamping on to the panel so the ink was lighter.

I then used the Scallop Flower Die and cut out three flowers from Crunchy Waxed Paper that I’d painted with Bora Bora. I used an embossing folder and then cut them ready to make a rose.  I also used the small Oak Leaf Die and cut two from the painted CrunchyWaxed Paper and embossed them too. 

All of the pieces were made into a cone shape and then layered inside one another.

I used Bora Bora and Inky Pool to cover the metal embellishments and then used Treasure Gold in Sapphire, Aquamarine and WhiteFire to highlight them and the Rose Quartz.

I’ve stamped the bodice from the Hotpick 1214 set onto some Smoothy White Stamping Card, cut it out and then painted it.

I wanted to line the inside of the box so I blended Tumbled Glass and Broken China Distress Inks over some Smoothy Card and then used a small paintbrush to flick some watered down Bora Bora and Beach Hut over it.

To finish the top of the box I also cut a Mini Flourish from the painted Crunchy Waxed Paper and used the text from the Hotpick 1215 set. 

I added some Tim Holtz metal feet and then lightly brushed over them, as well as the metal panels and the edges of the box, with some White Fire Treasure Gold.

The little handle for the lid is made from a tiny cotton reel that I’ve painted. I originally was going to use a Hitch Fastener but as I’d run out of them the cotton reel was the next best option!

 

Here are my cotton reels in their new home ! Unfortunately, I creased the lining of the lid but as it’s on the inside I’m not too worried !
