NEW PA Winter Stamps {ZINSKI ART}

NEW PA Stamps Winter 2017: Zinski Art

Over the course of this year, Elena's little monsters have become affectionately loved the world over!

As you can see below, she has created some lovely seasonal stamps that allow you to create those somewhat quirky Christmas cards - very handy for those of you with a wicked sense of humour.

Over the next couple of blog posts Elena, along with Dounia and Keren will be sharing with you some fabulous ideas with all of these new sets.

All these new products are available from your PaperArtsy stockists now. See details in the stockists list at the foot of this post.

Hi everyone, Elena here. It's time to start thinking about Halloween, Christmas and all the lovely crafting that the end of year seasonal period offers.

Designing for Christmas and Halloween is full of inspiration in itself, so coming up with ideas for stamps is like having a basic recipe and simply adding extra spices and a touch more pepper. A little traditional with a twist of quirky and many of them can be used away from the holiday theme depending on how you colour them.

Tonight I wanted to give you a sense of what I might get up to with these stamps, but tomorrow, you'll get more lovely inspiration from Dounia, followed by Keren the following post.

Let's take a look at each set in more detail, and some ideas with them to whet your whistle...

The inspiration for the Halloween plate came from the double meaning of spirits, so I named them Vodkanov, Ginny, Rumbo, Martinez and Whiskers and I didn't want them to be too scary, just naughty but nice. But scary they can be if you use darker muted colours.

Candy time by Elena Guzinska

The spirits have been stuffed in their bottles for a whole year so they're eager to squeeze out because it's Halloween and that means candy time! I think these will be great for both male and female birthday cards too or one hidden amongst a shelf of 10 green bottles in a journal layout.

I've used them in a row here on the kitchen dresser but they don't mind being separated at all, they really are quite independent. I love the size of them, even just one standing alone coloured in neon colours would create a fantastic contrast if it's peeping through a black window card or stamping just the neck and face and doodling some string they'd make fab balloons!

I really love that these are so versatile, if they're coloured in Christmas colours they're very Christmassy, use a different palette and they will fit in anywhere

Chickens aren't just for Christmas by Elena Guzinska

This little fella was flying around with not a tree in sight for him to rest his tired wings, so Haphazard Hatted Harry climbed on Chunky Charlie Chicken and caught him just in time...

I love little characters and one of my favourite things to do is stand them on top of each other and a fun bookmark is the perfect platform.I'm going to make more in different combinations and this time around i think I'll laminate them!

Christmas isn't Christmas without trees, holly and baubles with a Robin thrown in for good measure, but look closely, are they trees? Is he a Robin? And just like chickens, baubles aren't just for Christmas!

Happy Jolly Days by Elena Guzinska

Traditional Christmas Card you say? Not on your Nelly! Who wants to stick to Red and Green when there are so many beautiful colour combinations and even though there are blues, pinks and yellows in this card, it works. These trees are calling out to be used as hats easily by masking out the trunk and cutting out a head image to paste into place.

I used the baubles as an edging on one side and I love how there's enough space on the rubber to cut and separate them if chosen to then they can be used to make backgrounds in random order so it doesn't end up too repetitive and regimented.

Whatever happened to finger puppets? I guess they got lost somewhere in time along with paper chains and magic markers, but I'm bringing them back! .

High Five for Christmas by Elena Guzinska

I drew a hand, not a very good one, i should have just drawn around mine, but they can be stamped, coloured and cut out with tabs to fit around fingers of all sizes. Not a fan of finger puppets?....

...no worries, these little peeps, again, can be separated and used simply as little folk art Christmas characters on cards and journals, but also as tree decorations and hangy danglybobs if stamped either directly onto chipboard or on tissue paper and decoupaged. I know I'm going to use these every Christmas, why? because they don't involve much fussy cutting due to their  simple shape!

I've so loved loved loved doing this blog because I'm a kid at heart and Halloween and Christmas is just magical don't you think?! Thank you big giant lots for joining me here tonight and hope you've had as much fun as I've had. Love Elena x

2017 #12 Hybrid Inks: with Hot Picks {by Ellie Knol}

2017 Topic 12: Hybrid Inks

I'm so glad that Ellie has experimented with gelli prints with oxide inks for this topic. I have done a few tests myself, so it is great to see plenty more variations on the concept. You do have to watch how you use water, but you can get some really fantastic results! As Ellie shares so wonderfully in this post!

Hi everyone, it's Ellie Knol again here with you today, and I'd like to share with you the making of beautiful backgrounds with Distress Oxide Inks, yes on a gelliplate!

I think you might know by now that I LOVE to make monoprints.. (mono means one, so one print on the paper only; no layered printing).  Especially with inks on the gelliplate, you can create transparent backgrounds.

I tried to use the Oxide inks differently to other artists.. different even from how Tim uses them ... Of course I made a whole bunch of backgrounds, but for the sake of them all being in one blogpost, I tended to pick the ones with the same color scheme to finish off as cards.

The close-up above has been made from this background, the monoprint from a round gelliplate and distress oxide inks!

I learned from this one that if you don't wet the paper before pulling a print, you might end up with a dotty like background, which is nice also!

I used stamps from the sets HP1005 and HP1501 and the PS021 numbers stencil.
This is the finished (first) card:

BUT wait,, it's got a little sister card!
WHY? After applying the ink to the plate, you use a brayer to blend it a little, right?
That ink... you can wipe it off the brayer with a cloth....or ....use it!
That's what I did and created a second background... and then it still had some drops of color as I misted it with water, so I created a third background:

NOW, onto the second project: I'll mention details only when I did it differently to the first project.

I misted the paper before pulling the print. I used the leftover ink on the gelliplate to stamp with. Benefit of this is that you can't go wrong in choosing a color that will fit the print.
LOVE this !!

I used stamps from the set HP1501 on this project.

I chose to keep this one simple, just some brown background stamping with a script and the 'No 1'  stamp. I used a white acrylic marker to accentuate the pattern and stamping.

AND as with the first project, this second card also has a brayer-cleanup little sister:

SO, now onto project number three...

I took some color away from the petals, and added white accents with an acrylic marker!
Note that I stamped the bubbles in a later stage, when I had some leftover different colors (like purple) ink on the plate .

I used stamps from the sets HP1010 and EKC01.

Card from brayer-cleanup:

What I learned is that I mostly like to use a little bit of ink (as with paint) on the plate, rather than a lot, as it creates a more transparent print.
I still have a lot of beautiful backgrounds to be used in near future.

So, now you have a go yourselves, just have a play! It's so fun to explore new techniques, especially when a product hasn't been on the market for that long.
I like the chalky effect of the inks; you have to learn to take advantage of that. They behave very different to other inks.

I must admit... I made a long list of possibilties, like heat embossing or using structure paste and a stencil before pulling a print, or using other resist techniques.. but only got to cover a few of the possibilities.
My goal was to create a print on fabric, and make a book cover of it. I ended up somewhere else.. there will be a next time.. of course!

Ohh what a lot of fantastic ideas Ellie - that's the thing with gelli printing, once you hook onto an idea you end up testing the concept with variations, and  there is always something new to discover along the way!! I love all these with Oxide inks! Cannot wait to have a go myself! Thankyou! ~ Leandra

2017 #12 Hybrid Inks: Autumn Postcard {by Jennie Atkinson}

2017 Topic 12: Hybrid Inks

Jennie decides in this post to use her oxide inks onto a painted background - wathc what happens!

Hi everyone, it's Jennie (Live the Dream) with you today, and I'd like to share with you some experiments using the wonderful new Distress Oxides and PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylic Paint.

Many of you will know how much I love the Infusions and that I find I have a far greater control over the colour and saturation levels when I give the cardstock a coating of Fresco Acrylic Paint. So .... I decided to experiment in a similar way with the Distress Oxides and have been very pleased with the results, especially when combined with Scrapcosy's wonderful new Autumn stamp release.

I will start with the experiments so you can see what I am talking about! I love using PaperArtsy Smoothy Cardstock as it really does hold the ink and water well. Using some ATC sized pieces I splodged the following Distress Oxides on my craft mat and spritzed them with a little water.

This was how the ordinary cardstock picked up the colours - very nice and I like the effect but you know me, I always want to get something a little softer!

But look at the difference when the cardstock has been primed with Chalk Fresco Finish Acrylic Paint .... a much softer colour which sits on top of the paint instead of being absorbed into the cardstock.

Seeing the experimental pieces side by side it doesn't seem possible that I have used the same colours. But I have to admit to liking the softer version which sits better with my vintage style.

I wanted to create a soft vintage Autumnul postcard using Scrapcosy's Autumn stamp set ESC05 and stencil PS065 from her release back in June. The stamps are just so gorgeously detailed and there are so many lovely elements on the stencil.

For the postcard itself: before using any inks or stamps I primed my piece of 6" x 4" Smoothy Cardstock with Chalk Fresco Acrylic Paint again in order to maintain the same colours for my base. I picked up a minimal amount of colour from my craft mat this time, just enough to hint at a watery autumnul day. I blended some Vintage Photo Distress Oxide lightly through the stencil and stamped text here and there as a second generation inking. Just keeping everything as light as possible.

I went in a bit heavier with colour for the toadstools as I wanted some brighter colours. I managed to find the "best" bits stamping with Archival Black Ink

These were then cut out and layered onto the postcard - I just love those gorgeous random splotches of colour and watermarks!

From the pieces which were left over I stamped some acorns .....

..... and then used Grunge Paste through the stencil to create a small sentiment which hides the messy cutting at the feet of the toadstools!

I really love the softness of colour the Chalk Fresco gives the Distress Oxides. As much as I love the bright colours they are not for me, but by combining the two products the result is a beautifully smooth softer hue whist still maintaining the oxidised finish.

I do hope this gives you some ideas as to how you can lighten bright colours to give them a more muted vintage hue by priming the cardstock first. I have to admit to getting through a huge amount of Chalk Fresco Acrylic Paint - I use it as a base for so many projects as it really does give a very different finish to Gesso, but doesn't overpower the project with a base colour.

As always thank you for joining me and here's hoping that the Autumn doesn't arrive just yet!

Jennie x

Live The Dream

I love how you figured out how to soften the oxides to suit your personal preferences Jennie! This has turned out fabulous, the stamp details really pop beautifully!!
