NEW PaperArtsy Products: Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur {June 2022}

A note from Leandra:
Gwen's boho style of crafting is so interesting with the incredible use of colour, texture and layering. On first inspection you scratch your head wondering how she does it, but when you read her explanations, or take a class, the method becomes apparent as you will see in the project she explains at the foot of this post. We love the rich influences of numerous cultures that often play a role in her art, and her hand-drawn imagery is full of the same rich detail.

Gwen will be LIVE with her new products and ideas over in our Facebook Group, PaperArtsy People shortly after this post publishes. I really hope you can drop by or catch the replay. You will love seeing what Gwen has made with these for sure!

For the next 3 months, these stamps are only available EXCLUSIVELY from our approved stockists. Please check the list at the foot of this post of from the home page tab of the blog.

Hi everyone, Gwen here!

I'm thrilled to share my latest release
for PaperArtsy with you which includes three hand-drawn stamp sets.

I'm very excited about this group of stamps as it builds on two different series of designs from previous releases and also features a set that's been on my personal wish list for a long time - tribally inspired textures! Although they may appear to be quite different from each other, I love how well the three sets combine together as well as how they can be used on their own or paired with previous sets. So much versatility, if I do say so myself.

Price: RRP €21.92 +VAT    Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam with a laminated storage/index sheet.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur 28 (EGL28)

I have always loved and been drawn to circles as a design motif and I'm extremely happy to have this new circle grid set (I call it Grids Gone Wild - Circles) as a companion set to EGL24 (below) which was square grids and filler elements.

This new circles set, EGL28, offers endless opportunities for layering and creating different repeating patterns or you can make fun and funky focal designs. Or both!

One of my favorite things about the way these stamps are designed is that you can choose to use the open grids on their own, fill up some or all of the openings, and then use the circular pattern grids on their own or layer them with the open grids. I also love that having them as separate stamps lets you layer in different colors as well. And, of course, I included a few stand-alone circle elements. Included with those is both the front and back side of a replica antique Chinese coin (this one is super fun to pair with heat embossing!)

Looking closely at this project, you can see how many ways I've used just this stamp set to create layers of pattern as well as line and stronger design elements in a variety of applications, including one of my more recent go-to techniques, DIY stickers.

This set is perfect for creating abstract patterned backgrounds for your cards and tags, art journaling and bullet journal backgrounds, as well as the way I've used it here - as a way to create lots of layers of texture and pattern in both the foreground and background of a mixed media piece. (I can also see this piece in a scaled back and smaller size making a perfect card.)

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur 29 (EGL29)

EGL29, which is what I'm calling my "Tribal Textures" set, is one that I've wanted to do for a long time and I finally feel like I got the patterns to be exactly what I was looking for... I just love how they came out and how fun they are for layering and creating all kinds of textured backgrounds and elements.

One of my favorite things in this set is the way the longer border stamps are designed to be used alone or to stack on top of each other to create thicker borders with mixed patterns (and colors too, if you want!) You can see below how I've stacked them at the bottom of my "G." I also love the way the basic circle and square shapes are echoed in different configurations and paired with different marks in all of the designs in this set.

Another one of my favorite parts of this set is the group of three larger stamps at the top that pull out some of my favorite circle / square and mark combinations from other designs so that you have accent or even focal images at a different scale that can combine with the other stamps in this collection or be used on their own. (And of course, they're totally fabulous when you combine them with other stamp sets!)

The idea was that you could create layered and / or repeating borders and backgrounds with those larger accents for fun cards and tags, scrapbook and journal backgrounds, stickers and journal fodder, and pretty much anything else you can think of where you want a touch of some funky patterns to add texture or visual interest to your project.

Eclectica³ Gwen Lafleur Set 30 (EGL30)

I call EGL30 my Test Tubes and Twigs stamp set. This one was designed with the idea that it's a continuation of the sets from my February 2022 release, but also that it can very definitely stand on its own.

I have a longtime fascination with test tubes - I even used them in an online class I taught last year where I decorated them and then filled them with fun elements and mini rolled journals. That class project inspired the idea to have test tubes as stamps, along with a holder and some fun elements that could fit inside in some way.

I had a lot of fun working with this set to try and show some of the many ways that you can mix and match the stamps to create fun elements in your journals or on cards, tags, or scrapbook layouts. For most of my projects today, I worked in a new handmade mini lapbook (inspired by my February 2022 samples) that features different ideas for using and combining these stamp designs.

Here you get a bit of a closeup and a peek at more of how the book looks as a whole and how you can peek in and see little snippets of the other projects (with a few blank pages for more!)

On the back cover of my book, you can see how I used the dandelion stamp repeated at different heights and then colored to hint at a meadow scene. I love the light and partially stamped flowers from the set in the background adding a bit of spring texture.

Above you can see how detailed the dandelion is... so fun to layer! I'm going to have to do this again sometime as a much longer border across the bottom of an art journal spread.

To take these stamps in a totally different direction, you can see how perfect they are for collage papers or DIY patterned papers like the one I was making in the photo below.

I turned my collage paper into a dimensional flower for one of the inside covers of my mini lapbook - you can still see some hints of the patterns on the petals and leaf - I love the subtle details that the stamps add in this project.

Of course, my initial vision for this set was for layering and creating a whole scene with different botanical elements inside a test tube that's held in a cool, antique looking stand. I love how you can get a similar look either with or without masking - all of the stamp elements are sized to work together and the mushrooms, leaves, and flowers can either fit entirely in one of the two sizes of test tubes or sticking out like it's a vase. (And I picture the stand working as a vase too, even without a test tube!)

I also envisioned this type of layered scene as being the perfect cover for a card, tag, or envelope. Or here, I've used it on an envelope that holds a jumbo shipping tag. It's such a unique and pretty way to send a "just because" or even a "get well soon" type of sentiment. Or also as a great pocket or tip-in in a journal or scrapbook.

Project: "Choose Happiness" Mixed Media Art Card

To bring it all together, I've made a small mixed media piece (which could also be a card, tag, or art journal page,) that I included in my mini lapbook. While I was working, I took a few photos so that I could share the process with you.

First, I took a piece of colored and lightly patterned paper and used the open circle grid from EGL28. I stamped that a few times - repeating to fill the background. Then I switched ink colors and stamped the coordinating circle patterns into the openings.

Next you can see that I basically repeated step 1 with a different color of patterned paper using one of the background textures from EGL29. Then I tore it to a smaller piece and set it aside for later.

From there I took one of the Chinese coin stamps from EGL29 and stamped it several times on some PaperArtsy Smoothy Card that I had painted with Fresco Acrylic Paint in gold. I used a pigment ink and then heat embossed it with my Turkish Bronze Boho Blends embossing powder to get a bit of dimension and an antique metallic feel. I picked one of the coins that I liked the best and cut it out.

After that, I cut a patterned frame from a sheet printed paper elements and stamped the dandelion from EGL30 and colored it in with colored pencils (I used a blending pencil to smooth and brighten the colors.)

With all of my elements made, it was time to bring it all together! I arranged and adhered the pieces on the largest stamped background so that I liked the layout. Then I accented with a few pieces of transparent printed washi tape and some washi frames.

Finally, I decided that this little piece would work perfectly in my mini lapbook and I adhered it onto one of the inside panels. Since there was a little extra space on the bottom, I glued on some fun fringed metallic trim as the perfect finishing touch.

Whew! That's it for this release... I'm thrilled with how these stamps came out and I'm having so much fun using them. I can't wait to spend more time creating with them - especially pairing these stamps with previous sets to make fun new combinations of designs! I hope that you love these as much as I do and that you're feeling inspired and ready to go create.

Have fun and happy stamping!

Gwen

NEW PaperArtsy Products: Gwen Lafleur {May 2020}

 Eclectica³ Collection {Gwen Lafleur}
May 2020 New Product Announcement

A note from Leandra:
As Gwen adds to her stamp collection, the opportunity to explore new artistic expression grows. The tribal series is a direct reponse for the cries of 'more' after people saw an amazing piece she created for us earlier in the year. The circles and 'India' sets are typical of Gwen's blended cross-cultural style. I find it super refreshing and fascinating to see how she shares the different creative endeavours you can explore with these 3 sets. I encourage you to book onto a virtual class with Gwen, details at the end of her post regarding the upcoming classes she has planned.

Hi everyone, Gwen Lafleur here. I'm super excited to share with you my newest release for PaperArtsy - three new hand-drawn stamp sets.

This release is an eclectic mix of designs and images that are inspired by my travels as well as some of the marks and motifs that I commonly use in my work... everything from India to mark-making to a mashup of tribal influences. As you'll see in my samples below, they're all super versatile; you can use them to make cards and tags, art journal pages or mixed media artwork, and EGL09 in particular makes fun and unique art dolls.

If you want to buy these stamps, they are available EXCLUSIVELY from PaperArtsy approved stockists for the next 6 months. PaperArtsy will not compete with retailers, so if you want to get your hands on any of these products, you will need to source them from a stockist - check out the list at the bottom of this post!

Let's take a closer look at these new beauties, some ideas from each set and even a step-by-step project.

  New Stamps
Price: RRP £18.74 +VAT
Size:5" x 6" (13 x16.5cm)
All stamps are individually trimmed onto cling foam, presented in a clear hanging bag
with a laminated storage/index sheet.

Eclectica Gwen Lafleur Set 07 (EGL07)

The first set in this release, EGL07, is the one I'm calling my India set. These designs are all drawn by hand and were heavily inspired by a trip to India a few years ago as well as the gorgeous patterns and textiles from that country. The lotus, elephant, and hamsa are all based on some of my hand-carved stamp designs, only much more detailed. I added several paisley patterns and an octagonal pattern (which repeats beautifully,) based on traditional Indian fabrics.

I used all of the stamps in this set in various combinations to create spreads in a mini art journal (about 3" x 3.") I love how they mix and match together for vastly different looks depending on the combination you choose and the colors and composition of your layout.

This set is also fantastic for making tags or cards. The octagonal image can be repeated to make a fabulous background for larger art journal pages or to make your own patterned paper for scrapbooks or for collage papers. You can see below how I combined several of the stamps from this set to make a framed background.

Eclectica Gwen Lafleur Set 08 (EGL08)

This set is the one I call my Mark Making Circles. The nine hand-drawn circle stamps were designed to fit perfectly into either of the frames, or you can use them all individually. (Here's a tip for you... take a sharp pair of scissors and snip the rubber out from the center of the frame stamps so that you can see where you're placing them to get them perfectly centered around the smaller circles.)

I love the sheer variety of the images in this set and how perfectly they combine with each other and with my other stamp sets. They're ideal for making repeated backgrounds or borders. I've used them here to create both the sense of a line as well as a focal point on a page in my art journal, but they're great for cards and tags, scrapbooking, and other mixed media applications.

Here you can see how I used ten of the eleven stamps in the set to make a very quick and easy card on a painted background.

I love the detail of each of the individual stamps... it makes it easy to get a lot of impact without a lot of time or effort. I think this card took me less than ten minutes to create.

Eclectica Gwen Lafleur Set 09 (EGL09)

The third set in this release is the one I call my Tribal Faces set and, as much as I hate to play favorites, it's totally my favorite. There are four hand-drawn faces and five other shapes and symbols that are reflective of a large mashup of influences - everything from African masks to Central Asian to Indian and even a bit of Native American, Aztec, and Samoan. I used PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylic Paints and some pens and markers to color their faces and "dress" them in Ikat-patterned robes.

I love the way the faces work so perfectly to create art dolls or mini mixed media portraits for cards and tags, art journals, or off the page work like this piece. The flower, leaf stem, and three other motifs give it a lot of additional versatility and allow you to create small patterns and borders.

Although my first sample had a lot of detail, I also love that you can still use these without having to spend tons of time coloring. The wash of PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylic Paint rectangles in the background are perfect frames for a few friendly faces on this handmade card. There are endless ways to work with this set - I have tons more ideas that I can't wait to try out.

Project: The Warrior - Mini Mixed Media Artwork

As a mini project tutorial to share today, I've used all three of my new stamp sets to make a small piece of mixed media artwork (about 4" x 6.")

Ready for an overview of how you could make something similar?

First I started with a piece of card that had been painted with PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylic Paints, stamped with designs from EGL07 and EGL09, then painted a bit more.

Then I took a few small pieces of deli paper, painted each of them with two colors of PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylic Paints, dried them quickly with a heat tool, and then stamped with designs from all three stamp sets.

Next I started to tear out pieces of the different stamped collage papers to begin to create a figure. I inked the edges and glued down the pieces with a glue stick (or matte medium or something similar would work.)

And finally I pulled out some pens, pencils, and markers to add a bit of color into the figure as well as some marks and shading on the background as well as a border around the edges.

He's quirky and a bit funky (and maybe a tad grumpy,) but he was loads of fun to make and quite a fast and easy piece to pull together.

So that's it for the introduction to my latest release... I'm so excited to be sharing these designs at last and I can't wait to finally be able to use the more myself. But I think I'm even more excited to see what you all do with them - especially those faces! I hope you'll post and tag me so that I can see.

Thank you for popping in today to see the new stamps and projects - hope you love them as much as I do.

Our brand is only available from established stockists who are VAT/ GST/ sales tax registered and for whom product education is a core principle. We would rather supply a few hand selected stockists, than the greater masses. If you would like to apply to be a stockist, you can find our more about our supply criteria here
