2016 #8 Topsy Turvy Blooms {by Ruth Mescall}

 2016 Topic 8: White Space

Hi everyone Ruth here. Tonight I'd like to share with you this evening a post about using white space.

My style is probably quite eclectic and whilst I enjoy creating projects with lots of texture and layers and quite a vintage style, I also find it immensely satisfying to create projects with crisp clean lines and lots of white space. White space can really make images pop and give a frame to them. Although they may look quick to make they can take some time in the planning.

The first time I saw the daisy head image I thought they would look fantastic upside down like tumbling blooms spiraling down from the sky. As the images have such clean lines I decided to create a very simple canvas with some funky coloured blooms and of course my addiction .. a little touch of gold.

Step One: I covered a square piece of grey board with some canvas. Using the PaperArtsy stencil by Lin Brown PS025  and Grunge Paste I made 3 pebble lines down the left hand side of the canvas and used the pebble 'mound' to make a frame for the sentiment. I then gave the whole canvas one coat of Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paint in Snowflake

Step Two: I masked a peice of Smoothy Heavyweight stamping card down the middle and used Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paint in Cherry Red and Tango vertically down one side. Swapping the masking tape around I used Carribean Sea, China, Granny Smith and Gold painting horizontally across the card this time.

Step Three: Next I stamped 3 daisy heads from {Lin Brown} Collection (ELB26) in Black Archival and then embossed with clear embossing powder before cutting out.

(ELB26)

Step Four: I added some further shading to the petals with a dark blue pencil and added some gold dots before mounting them on the canvas with 3D foam.

Step Five: Lastly I stamped part of one of the sentiments from Eclectica {Lin Brown} Collection (ELB28) and heat embossed as before. Whilst the embossing powder was still warm I placed some gold foil over the top section of the word so it adhered and then mounted it on the canvas.

I love the contrast of vibrant colours against a snow white background, and the gold really pops.

These stamps are perfect for contemporary projects or cards because of their clean lines and it's always great to see the versatility in a stamp...even if it is just upside down. Grunge Paste is another great way of adding some subtle detail to a background as it can be painted over to blend in. I hope you might be tempted to try a project using white space. Ruth x

Thanks Ruth, gorgeous use of the gold highlights, so very effective especially over the top of the text. Really nice use of Grunge Paste, adding texture to the background while still keeping the feeling of space. ~Darcy

Beautiful clean and crisp design Ruth. The flowerheads look great and excellent stamp positioning on the demarcation line of the two colours! I love the GP used in this way too, purely for the texture and not detracting from the crispness of the design.

Beautiful and very clever use of the foil, Ruth...... I love the texture created by the hot embossing powder underneath - definitely filing this technique for use somewhere down the line!! xxx Lynn

So clever how you coloured the flowers - such a simple idea to get many differently coloured flower heads painted efficiently. And I love the clean lines of your canvas, subtle texture and it's really amazing to see how the flower heads look so different upside-down.
