Darcy Wilkinson {Special 10th Birthday Post} Feathers ....

Hi everyone, Leandra here

Well tonight we have a very special treat for you. Missy Darcy asked for feathers, and feathers she got! Now take a look at the crazy things she has been doing with them...shall we say...birds of a feather here at HQ are MR PA and I !! I leave you in her capable hands!

Oh and don't forget! To win a set of these 3 feathery minis, leave a comment on this blog post. We have 3 sets to give away on Sunday. Gotta be in to win folks! Here's Darcy...

"What an exciting month it has been, the blog has been so full of wonderful projects. It really has been a celebration of all things PaperArtsy. I am thrilled to be a part of the Birthday releases, and today I am showcasing 3 new mini stamps".

Today is all about feathers. Here are the 3 new stamps.

Experiments
Firstly I did some experiments and found that if you want a crisp, clean, black image on paper/card then the best ink pad to use with these stamps is a versafine ink pad. This really does pick out all the details beautifully, which is exactly what it is designed to do. Though the others all did OK too. It's always interesting to do an ink comparison, and it does make a difference how juicy your ink pad is too.

I felt these feathers would be best used as background stamps. I have actually been looking for feather stamps to use on background papers for a long time, and these do not disappoint. They really are perfect for the job. So I decided to show you a few ways to use them.

I took some Smoothy Heavy Weight Stamping Card and created these backgrounds. Note, smoothy is a super-smooth card, and so it allows the detail of these images to really be seen, the right ink and the right card are crucial to getting a good result with your stamps. I sorted out my ink pads into 3 groups of colours; pastels, brights and darks and created a tag background with each feather.

Then I dug out an old black distress ink pad, it is really worn out. I used this to make a faded black, almost grey scale background. Then I made another two using Aqua-markers and Metallic markers. I really love these backgrounds, how they all give different effects just by varying the intensity of colour.

Specimen Tag
Next I created a larger background on A4. I spritzed the smoothy card with water then blended on some Honeydew, Nougat and Ice Blue Fresco Chalk Acrylic Paint.

I then sprayed with Adirondack lettuce and butterscotch. Next I stamped some of the Sara Naumann images from ESN06, and then knocked back the stamping with more Honeydew, Nougat and Ice Blue paint.

It looked very cold, so I added a super thin wash of Beach Hut Fresco Paint. Then I used my worn out distress black to stamp the feather all over. (I really like the faded look that comes from the dried out ink).

A close up of the details. I wanted a vintage Victorian feel, and this faded look achieves that.

I cut this background down to a tall tag, and attached it to grey board for stability.

I then cut 3 squares of smoothy card and spread on some grunge paste. I stamped into each with the leaf/text stamp from Urban Snapshot Nature 3 set

Once dry I added Treasure Gold. I painted some more Smoothy with French Roast Fresco, and matted the stamped squares onto the darker squares.

I painted some smoothy with translucent fresco, then stamped the eggs from US Nature 3. I cut them out and covered each with Glossy Accents. Once dry I glued them to the matted squares. I stamped the bird word from Urban Snapshots Nature 1, and matted that onto painted Smoothy Card

Finally I cut 3 tiny tags from smoothy, painted them with Nougat, and dirtied them up around the edges with French Roast. I added ABC to the tags to make them look like specimen labels.

I punched 2 holes in the top of the tag and added a wire hanger with a home-made clay bead.

Evening Bag
Next up I wanted to try the stamps onto fabric. I cut some calico and gave it 3 coats of gesso, I truly love this technique, it makes a really strong but pliable substrate. I gave it a base coat of Nougat and then stamped the feathers in Elephant, Blood Orange and Little Black Dress.

I cut the fabric out into a small bag/purse shape, and stitched the 2 pieces together.

I found some old purses in a charity shop, stripped away the old fabric and I was left with a few great handles. These are the type you glue to the fabric, I found out it was fiddly, but not impossible.

As I was gluing it together I decided the bag needed a small embellishment, so I stamped the bird from HP1104 onto a sample of leather.

I punched a hole and added a cord. This was then trapped into the purse frame along with the fabric.

Here it is all done, ready for a night out..

Dream Catcher
I wanted to try the feathers on metal. Using Archival I stamped onto the inside of a drinks can. I went around the edge with a dressmaking wheel and cut out the feather. Then I created the feather markings on the back, using a paper stump and a small ball tool. Finally I added a little treasure gold to the front edges.

I wondered what I could use them on, and decided to create a mandala/dreamcatcher.

I took a large A3 size piece of Smoothy Heavy Weight Stamping Card. I stamped the feathers in Snowflake, and once dry I painted over them with Bora Bora. I immediately wiped this back with a baby wipe. The Snowflake acts as a resist, and you are left with the 2 colours.

Over this I created the outlines of the dreamcatcher, using a compass, a 3mm black pen and some of the images from JOFY09.

Close up of the design..

I painted the whole thing using Fresco Paints. Adding small highlights with a posca pen.

Close up of the colour stage ....

Lastly I put a small hole in the end of each feather, I added some linked chain, which in turn was attached to a brad . This was then pushed through the card so that the feathers hang down. To keep them in place I put a dab of silicone glue behind each feather.

The finished piece..

Birthday Love Birds
Next I thought I would try these feathers on canvas. I stamped them using snowflake onto a PaperArtsy canvas, then I dabbed on some masking fluid. Once fully dry I was able to paint over them using Ice Blue Sky, Baltic Blue, Pansy and Rose. After drying the paint I peeled off the masking fluid to reveal the white feathers, I then stamped over these with more baltic blue.

Stamping with paint gives a much softer blurry effect. Very different from the inked samples.

This canvas comes with a frame, I painted it with Chocolate Pudding, then Crackle Glaze, then Nougat. Once dry I stamped the feathers with a distress ink, and dabbed some watered down French Roast onto all the edges. At the same time I painted and crackled a piece of PaperArtsy Cruncy Wax Paper in the same colours.

My next job was to draw up a curly branch/vine and a sentiment scroll. The banner is painted with Nougat, Mocha Mousse and French Roast and the stems are coloured with Toad Hall, Guacamole, Hey Pesto and Honeydew. I took the piece of crackled wax paper, and painted the back with Chocolate Pudding, this was now a really strong substrate. I stamped the crackled side with the feather stamps using an opaque Fresco. Because the wax paper now had several layers on it, I found that I could curl the edges and it would keep its shape.

I needed models, or rather two people's heads for my love birds, after sending a weird request to PA HQ, I had photos that I printed out in black and white, then painted.

Next I painted some Smoothy White Stamping Card with Nougat, drew a simple bird shape, and stamped the body of the bird with the feathers and opaques. The card bodies will lie flat, and the wax paper feathers will curl slightly because of the flexibility of the paper, they will be partly glued down.

Do you recognize the love birds..

Here are the stems and scroll glued into place. I added some tiny leaves and flowers.

Once glued together, and with their crowns in place our King and Queen of PaperArtsy were
attached to the canvas.

Here it is finished..

Darcy Wilkinson Project #4 Fabric Journal ....

"Hi everyone, Darcy here. For my fabric item this month I wanted to make a journal. As I thought more about it I decided to challenge myself to make it a completely 'no sew' project, as I am aware that not everyone likes to sew, or has access to a machine.

So bearing this in mind I needed to think about fabric. I could not stitch layers together so it needed to be heavy weight, I could not hem the edges so I had to deliberately fray the edges, or go for a non fraying fabric. This fabric needed to take paint and glue and be somewhat interesting".

I rummaged in my fabric stash and came out with a few denim pockets, these were left over from some charity bags I made a couple of years ago. I made a paper template, and cut each of my denim pieces and pockets to roughly this size. I decided early on that I wasn't too bothered about the edges being neat.

I cut 4 pockets for the pages, and 2 plain pieces for the covers. I allowed an extra bit of fabric on one side of the cover, I folded this under to add a little strength. I then punched 5 holes with a cropodile, down one side of all the pieces. You can see the covers end up with 2 rows of holes, as that is the piece that will be folded under.

Next I added eyelets. This completes the basic construction of the pages. They will be bound together at the end.

I began to paint each side of the covers, and each side of the 'pages'. Blending Fresco Paints directly onto the denim. Once dry I added some background stamping.

Although this is a 'no sew' project I wanted it to have a sewing theme, so I used the following stamps. The Hot Picks Haberdashery Range. There are 7 stamp plates to choose from. HP1211, HP1212, HP1213, HP1214, HP1215, HP1216 & HP1217

I then started to add decoration using the stamps. The best way to do this is to stamp onto tissue paper. You can then paint the back and front, or just the front, and then glue to the fabric. With the movement of the fabric this addition of tissue works really well.

See Leandra's videos on Youtube to see how effective stamping and painting on tissue can be.

I added stamped tissue to this small pocket, and also to the edge of the front cover.

I felt it needed a little something more, so I used coloured grunge paste through a stencil. I wasn't at all sure how it would react on fabric, but it worked really well. I stamped into it with a text stamp, and once dry I added Treasure Gold.

I thought I would need to buy special fabric glue, but it turned out that my regular PVA glue
worked just fine, so using that I attached the small pocket to the front cover. I added plenty of glue, then weighted it down and left it overnight. The next day it was stuck solid.

So onto the pages.

I added paint splatters, and stencilling, and stamped tissue paper.

I then took some images of 50's style women, that a good friend of mine drew. I traced them onto calico, and painted the skin areas with Fresco Paint.

I used Nougat, Rose and Irish Cream for the skin tones. I used fine tipped pens for the shoes and eyes/lips.

Next I traced all the bits of her clothing and hair onto tissue.

These were cut out , painted with Frescos, and then stamped. Once each piece was done I glued them to the fabric body, effectively dressing the doll.

She was then glued into the journal. On the page opposite her I added more stamped tissue
elements, and a quote also stamped onto tissue. To frame each of the words I used just one of the stems from the JOFY stamp collection.

I added other sewing elements to the pages. These were stamped onto tissue, then glued to spare denim, and then glued into the journal. This adds a bit more height and interest to the pages.

I then created 4 more dress up dolls in the same way, here are the pieces of another one. ...and the finished doll.

I cut this waistband detail from another old pair of jeans. I added a little paint and then some
stamped tissue. Once glued to the front and back covers this will become the closure for the book.

So here are the finished pages.

Front Cover..

First 2 pages. You can see I layered the doll onto bits of dressmaking tissue paper.

Next 2 pages.. Here you can see one of the pages has the corner missing, that's ok, I am fine with the pages not being perfect. I also deliberately frayed all the edges.

Next pages.. I just love the quote on this one..

4th doll...

and the last doll ..

and finally the back cover..

Now to bind the pages. When I made the giraffe, I had a really small amount of clay left over. Rather than throw it out I rolled it into small balls, poked a skewer through them, and ended up with beads.

Once dried out.(took a couple of days) I sealed them with watered down PVA glue, and then I painted them with Frescos. To add the stamping, I found the easiest way was to ink up the stamp and then take the bead and roll it across the stamp. I added dots of acrylic ink and then added a coat of gloss medium.

I then needed a long cord. I would normally make this on my sewing machine... but this is 'no sew'..I dug out my lucet, I cannot remember the last time I used this, must be years. After a good while and a cuppa, I figured out how to use it.

I then threaded my cord through the bottom eyelet on each page, taking both ends through, so they cross on the inside. The cord ends come back out and up through a bead. Then they cross on the outside.

Then they go through the next hole. One cord end goes in the front and out the back, and the other end goes in the back and out the front. Then pass them through the next bead.

Continue crossing the cord ends on the outside, adding a bead, then taking both ends through all the eyelets. Do this till you read the top of the book. Tie the ends of the cord at the top eyelet, then add the last bead so that it hangs down. Take the cord through the bead a couple times and tie a knot underneath.

This is how the edge looks now.. The pages are now laced together and nice and sturdy.

The final job is to fill the pockets on the pages.
I took some manilla tags.
I used a different technique on each one.
Blended opaques... added paper....stamping with Snowflake...adding stamped grunge paste...adding a layer of embossed metal card....stencilling ...

These are the same tags with the next layer on..
On the blended one I added crackle and a top layer of fresco.
On the book page one I added blended translucents
on the stamped Snowflake I added an opaque then wiped back with a baby wipe
on the grunge paste I added Treasure Gold
to the metal card I added spray ink
to the stencilling I added a bumped layer

I then decorated each tag with elements from the Hot Picks Haberdashery Stamp Sets as before. Also lace, ribbon, dressmaking pattern paper, stick pins, buttons etc.

And the other 3..

Now the tags are inside, you can see how thick and fluffy it becomes..

I love how this turned out. It is full of colour, full of texture, and I didn't add any sewing.

I hope this might inspire you to grab some old fabric and make a journal, or have a go at stamping on tissue paper, or just have a go at the tags.

I will be back tomorrow with a special 10th anniversary post.

Leandra Says: How cool the pages look even with the addition of paint, let alone the rest of the elements you introduce. It looks fantastic. And well done on the no-sew fabric book! Who'd have thunk it possible.

Gillian Says:OMG .... I LOVE LOVE LOVE this fabric Journal, the fresco paints look awesome on denim. Love how you have showcased all the "Haberdashery" stamp sets.
