2017 #19 My Favourite Things

Topic 19: My Favourite Things...

Well hello everyone, Darcy here, it looks like you had a great time with the last challenge. you all got very creative with ripping and burning.

Let's see who won the Topic 18: Torn, Ripped and Burnt Challenge...

The winner is: Asia from Lemon Creation with her fantastic journal spread inspired by Lynne Moncrieff.

Email Darcy to claim your prize. Darcydotneedles@gmail.com

So, with Christmas almost upon us, we figured the last thing you needed was a challenge for the next fortnight. Our next topic 'My Favourite Things'  is a chance for our bloggers to share with you their favourite things; how they interpret this is over to them. They might be looking back over the products they most like to work with, or perhaps how they find inspiration from others.

So, we would love you to continue to join us on our regular blog nights as we will have lots of inspiration for you. These posts will be packed with creativity and inspiring photos, and we hope that they will encourage you to make something just for you, with your favourites.

As we all start to slow down a little in time for Christmas it is the ideal time to create without the pressure of a challenge deadline, you can take your time and just enjoy the process. So keep tuning in as we have lots of great posts by our fantastic guest bloggers coming up.

Merry Christmas

Now back to our scheduled events for this evening...

In 2016 we released 4 stamps under the 'Everything Art' label. These are designed by Kasia Avery of Everything Art, and a big part of her life at the moment is hosting, with her husband Jamie the annual online class Wanderlust.

The stamps are sometime referred to in her technique lessons, and between them they do a fabulous job of teaching in depth about mixed-media products, methods, and of course, they have a whole range of visiting tutors for their classes too.

Today, Kasia and Jamie are launching their first stamp of 2017, a gorgeous alphabet. More details on their website. Available to purchase here from Everything Art now, and from Simon Says Stamp and other PaperArtsy stockists.

December 2014 Challenge Winner

Hi everyone, Leandra here

Wow, what a great month, what a great semester, and what a fantastic YEAR!.

As Darcy highlighted last night, so many superb things were presented in the final semester of this year.

Suffice to say, we would like to extend a massive thank you to all our Signature Stamp Designers, Our wonderful blog Guests who have featured every semester, our random one-off people who have posted here and there (such amazing eye candy-treats), and our #3UP contributors who have shared their ideas throughout the year. It has been a very busy year with post going up almost every night.

Of course, I cannot thank Darcy and Gillian enough for their magnificent administrative work they do, juggling the content, designers and so forth. I think we have only had a few hiccups this year, which is pretty amazing! The time it takes to get content ready, edit, make sure photos are the right size , check links are correct, prize draws and so forth...let alone the planning, approaching people, managing the calendar, Twitter, facebook relationships....when you add it all up, it is a very time consuming process. I prevaricate all they do so VERY, VERY much!

The highlight for me is when we get to meet up with blog and twitter followers at shows around the UK and beyond. There is nothing like putting the face to the name, and this year in particular, our collective relationships off line have deepened among twitter, facebook and blog followers, with PaperArtsy being the interest we all have in common. This is awesome. you guys are the best, and its so nice that what we do for 'work' has generated a wide circle of very lovely, supportive friends.

Next year we have decided after 3 years of this past format it is time for a massive change to the format, line up, challenges and more.

The new format will launch on Sunday Jan 4th, and as you will see, all will be revealed in due course. I'll see you back here then, but for now, I'll hand over to Darcy with the challenge winner info....

Wishing you all a very wonderful New Year!

Leandra

Weekly Challenge and Winners {February week 2}

Hi everyone Darcy here,
Wasn't last week fabulous! We had the welcome return of Clare Lloyd with some with her fabulous introduction to drawing faces and incorporating them into projects with scrummy backgrounds. Several PaperArtsy friends joined us and brought projects such as a door hanger in yummy colours, sweet wildflowers and a great example of the masking technique.

Thanks to everyone who joined in and made projects alongside all of our guests. And thank you also for all the comments left on blog posts. It's really encouraging for us to see your response to all the blog contributors.

1. And the winners are...

Random winner #1 from the First Challenge draw (every single entry linked, including multiple entries) is: Sherry of Sherry's simple Blog

Congratulations, you have won a PaperArtsy A5 stamp of your choice.

Random winner #2 the winner from the Second Challenge draw, (only one entry per name)
 is: APG Jamie

Congratulations, you have won a PaperArtsy A5 stamp of your choice.

*Winners please get in touch with Darcy (darcydotneedles@hotmail.com) with your full  name,  address and choice of stamp plate.

2. The week ahead...

But first tonight we start by welcoming back Julie Ann Lee. Let's see what Julie has been up to since we last saw her. Over on her blog I found some wonderful projects. Firstly this tag, where Julie has very cleverly given herself some extra working space by adding a pediment at the top and bottom.

Here we see Julie has really gone to town with creating texture and embellishments to create this fabulous layered card. There is so much detail to Julie's work, you must check out her blog to see all the close up photos.

This piece really caught my eye, Julie has made this for her daughter. The theme is Venetian, and she has captured that perfectly with the pale blues and golds. The petals are clustered around the head making it look like it is emerging, giving this piece a real sense of movement.

Finally Julie has been exploring the trend for upcycling cardboard packaging, to great effect in this piece.

3. P.A.Weekly Challenge from....{Julie Ann and other guests}

Julie Ann will be joined in the latter part of the week with other surprise guests, and of course, if you are inspired by any item you see on the blog this week, then please share what you get up to, and link your creativity here on the weekly challenge link.

To help you find the linky tool when you need it, just look at the final green paragraph on each blog post, there you will find a link that brings you back to this post.

You are also welcome to use any stamps/ products / substrates you have to hand, we do not expect you to exclusively use PA products - but of course it is lovely when you do!

The winners are announced Sunday evenings in the 7pm blog post (as above). It is your responsibility to check back and see if you have won. Hi everyone Darcy here,
Wasn't last week fabulous! We had a wonderful introduction from Pam Thorburn with some wonderful scrapping layouts with beautifully developed layers, and the return of yet more PaperArtsy friends.  We saw so much colour and beautiful texture, and even a zany circus type board from our very own Gillian, along with even more sneaks of new products.

Thanks to everyone who joined in and made projects alongside all of our guests. And thank you also for all the comments left on blog posts. It's really encouraging for us to see your response to all the blog contributors.

2. The week ahead...
Excitement builds at PA HQ this week, the UK's annual Trade Show for the craft sector, (Craft hobby and Stitch International) held at the NEC, Birmingham, is almost upon us (PaperArtsy will be stand A42). This means later this week we will start the first full reveal of some of the 85 new products we are launching over the next fortnight.

The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed Leandra keeps dropping hints among the week's blog posts, and the occasional picture finds it way onto her twitter feed @paperartsy So keep your eyes peeled!

But first tonight we start by welcoming back Clare Lloyd Since we saw Clare last month she has gone a bit 'face' crazy, which is perfect, as this is one of her talents she will be sharing this week in her blog posts.

We noticed Clare has joined this project for February, by the end of her posts this week, you might like to join in too with:

And if you check out her blog, you can see she has diligently been practising 'faces' with different colouring methods - distress for example as below.

A squiggly touch to this 'selfie'

And this one she has called 'scalped' and renamed 'vacant'... very funny, but I think she could become a queen should she sometime find an appropriate crown!

Clare describes this as an affirmation card, those white JoFY stamps are so effective.

Finally this wonderful piece done with watercolour pencils. Check out Clare's blog for all the details.

I think its safe to say Clare is a prolific blogger, and really seems to enjoy a broad variety of crafting techniques. I know her posts for us this week are going to challenge you, and we really hope you will join in and have a go. The word for the week is PRACTISE.

2. The week ahead...
Coming up later in the week ahead again we welcome back some past Guests, and perhaps a surprise face or two....we are going out of our way this year to spoil you!!
But first we start with an exciting brand new guest designer....

Hi Guys,
Its Leandra here to welcome Ellen Vargo! Check out the gorgeous things she makes!
I have had occasion over the last few years to email Ellen randomly, and she has always struck me as a bright, cheery and enthusiastic crafter. She is one of those names from 'across the pond' that frequently pops up on my radar for several years....always for good reasons! LOL
I have witnessed lovely samples she has made for special events, and online we seem to know a lot of people in common who often chat around similar subjects. She kind of went off the radar for a bit last year as she had a big house move, and that move also seems to have coincided with her art going in a new, more personal direction too. Which I think is totally fabulous.
I always feel that the purpose of crafting is to find your unique style, not to be a robotic mini-me's of other people's styles. That is the essence of this blog, to help you discover the things you do best, for you to gain the confidence to express yourself, the way you prefer. I was so thrilled to see Ellen was right on the same page; she had developed a gorgeous abstract style, and that was screaming out loud and clear from her blog. I just wondered if Fresco paint might be an interesting product for her to work with. Long story short, here she is happy to guest on the blog for the coming semester, and I am so pleased to showcase her amazing talent with you all.
It never ceases to surprise me how happy people are to guest for us, and I can't tell you how nice is it to have Ellen here to share with you. She has a wealth of experience, is thoroughly enjoying abstract art, paint and her ideas are suitable for cardmaking, journalling or massive interior decor canvases! What ever you choose to explore from Ellen's techniques, I am sure that what she does over the next few months could well spark your crafty mind thinking in new directions too.
Here's a few words of introduction from Ellen herself...

Hello!  My name is Ellen Vargo and I’m a mixed media art addict!

I’ve been making things since I was a little kid and have experimented in a lot of different crafty areas: jewelry making (beads), basket weaving, pottery, wood working, glass blowing (tried it once – too scary for me!) and probably more that I can’t even remember.

I started my journey in paper arts about 10 years ago.  A friend of mine was a demonstrator for Stampin’ Up and she’d do little projects with us after work.  So it all started with scrap-booking (sound familiar?).  That quickly evolved into card making.  But once I discovered the world of mixed media I was *hooked* !

About 5 years ago I started my own blog http://1036art.blogspot.com and have been on a few design teams as well.   I've drawn a lot of inspiration from the Ranger Signature Designers, including Tim Holtz, Wendy Vecchi, Dyan Reaveley, Dina Wakley, and more recently from Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and Jane Davies.

What I discovered from following these designers and many others, is that I could become very good at doing *their* style of art.  Vintage, steampunk, altered art, art journaling, ink sprays, stenciling, you name it.  I was very good at copying.

For the last two years I've been on a very deliberate mission to discover what *my* style is.  It was scary at first, but once I got going it was really fun!  I could throw out all the rules and just make whatever I wanted, in whatever way I wanted!  How liberating!

My history with Paper Artsy began when I came to visit England back in 2010.  I had the chance to visit Lin Brown’s store and was immediately drawn to the PaperArtsy Hot Picks stamps!  In fact, here’s a picture of me practically passed out on the floor of L.B. Crafts, blissfully surrounded by Hot Picks!  I grabbed up as many sets as I could stuff in my suitcase, and have been following along ever since.
Recently, I’ve become obsessed with abstract art using paint, collage and stamping.  I've come up with a process that works for me, and I’m super excited to share it with you!  It was a true honor when Leandra asked me to be a Guest Designer this semester.  Really, a dream come true.  You just never know where the road will lead… I hope you have lots of fun following along with my projects, and hope you decide to give it a try!

Ellen, thank you for stepping up to the plate, we are thrilled to have you as a GD this semester. I am the one who is so excited for you! Not just that you are finding your own niche in the craft world, but that you so generous and willing to share here with us all!

PS you guys, if you get a minute, go and look at this post from Ellen about her amazing Studio space in her new home. It is to die for!  We need to get some shots of it really, really messy I think! So so we know she is human! LOL

Thanks again, Leandra x

Hi everyone Darcy here,
Wasn't last week an amazing start to the year. We had a wonderful introduction from Clare Lloyd and the return of some PaperArtsy friends. So much inspiration, from clean and simple to quirky and bright. I know many of you were delighted with the new projects and jumped right in to play along.

Congratulations, you have won a PaperArtsy A5 stamp of your choice.

*Winners please get in touch with Darcy (darcydotneedles@hotmail.com) with your full  name,  address and choice of stamp plate.

2. The week ahead...
Coming up later in the week ahead we welcome back ...uh oh!  Well that would be telling wouldn't it! Of course, like last week there will be some more surprise guests towards the end of the week, but first we start with an exciting brand new guest designer.

Hi Guys, its Leandra here to welcome Julie Ann Lee!

Julie Ann is relatively new to crafting, but she has been bitten by the bug, and in the short time she has been crafting she has thrown herself in boots and all. Last year she was a regular playing along with guest designers, and quick to learn and incorporate new ideas into her own projects.

Despite being so new to this process, Julie Ann has quickly progressed through stages that probably took the great majority of us years, and she certainly manages to put her own twist on something, or try new ideas without fear. She is so bright and cheery in the way she presents blog projects, so if you haven't starting following her on her blog, you really should, she has a way of making you feel happy and certainly engenders motivation. I think Julie Ann is a true inspiration to us all.

We know she was a bit daunted by the task ahead, but nonetheless, she grabbed the bull by the horns and decided to go for it! Good for her, and I know you will love her!

Even though this blog is already a bit like your second home, we extend a warm welcome to you Julie Ann.

Here's a few words of introduction from Julie Ann herself...

Hi everyone. Well, as Leandra has said, I am not a super-experienced crafter: I am still learning lots, so I hope you’ll feel able to learn along with me!

It was PaperArtsy's ‘Ink and the Dog’ stamps that really sparked my interest in crafting the way I do. I had always loved making things, painting and drawing. Even though I studied English Literature at University, I spent hours of lecture time doodling faces, flowers, towers and Gothic windows and finding I could only just read my lecture notes through a tangle of squiggles and swirls!

Then not so many years ago, a friend announced she wanted to make her own greetings cards and that she had heard of a great shop in London where they sold rubber stamps and card-making supplies. I went with her to Blade Rubber Stamps, an Aladdin’s  Cave of stamps, inks and papers not far from London’s British Museum and I saw my first PaperArtsy stamp plate: an ‘Ink and the Dog’  ‘Wings’ one! Those images really chimed with my imagination. Here were super quirky, dreamlike images that I wanted to play with in my own artwork.

As soon as I discovered there was a Paper Artsy Blog, I was glued to the computer, avidly following Leandra’s tutorials and falling for Lynne Perrella’s incredible images, plus of course Portfolio Pastels, Fresco Finish Paints, Grunge Paste and Crackle Glaze. I love all things vintage and anything eclectic and unexpected. I am most happy when I’m playing with paints and inks and altering almost anything that offers me a friendly surface!

It was Leandra – so kind and encouraging - who suggested I start blogging when I sent her photos of a little exploding box I had made using my ‘Ink and the Dog’ stamps, and in April 2013 I created http://magpieheaven.blogspot.co.uk/, my very own blog where I could spread my creative wings and - most importantly – share  with other crafty enthusiasts.

Not long after this, again thanks to Leandra, I was on Twitter as @woletz1 and getting to know the lovely #PATWITS, who share their crafty ideas, advice and experiences so generously. They are a friendly bunch as I discovered when I went to Ally Pally for the very first time and met some of them. There are still some faces that I need to put to names so I am hoping that 2014 will be a year of making even more creative friends thanks to PaperArtsy.

Julie, it's been a delight to watch you this year, and I'm sure that the blog followers will enjoy your contributions this semester. Thank you for being brave and stepping up to the plate, we are thrilled to have you as a GD this semester.

Thanks again, Leandra x
